Karachi: At least four persons including two women died and around seventy others were hospitalized on Sunday evening due to mysterious poisonous gas leakage in the city’s Keamari area, police said.
Those hospitalized had complained of respiratory problems, police said noting that the real cause could not be ascertained yet. However, it was suspected that the leakage of gas occurred during offloading chemicals from a cargo ship anchored at Keamari Jetty.
The police officials had rushed to the hospital to inquire from patients about the incident.
“Initial inquiry suggests that gas leakage occurred from a container,” SP Keamari Imran Niazi told newsmen. It’s said that the gas leakage was of certain chemical used for preserving the vegetables.
However a spokesman of Karachi Port Trust denied such reports saying no ship carrying any chemical had berthed recently. “All the hospitalized persons were lifted from the road,” he said adding that there were no reports of any smell of gas.
Police official confirmed that four persons including two women died and over 70 persons have been hospitalized.
Meanwhile, electronic media reported that gas leakage occurred from a ship or a container and four persons died and thirty fainted within fifteen minutes.
It may be recalled that thousands of fish had perished about a year back after a ship discharged poisonous chemical into the sea.
