Living in an Abnormal and Insane Society-2When the criminal behaviors are normalized in the society, how this society could be a normal one? If the society is not normal, it means that society is insane. We, unfortunately, are living in such an insane society where the criminal behaviors are being treated as sane and normal.

We are living in an abnormal and insane society. Let me elaborate my point of view. Society refers to the group of people, who share certain attributes with each other, such as language and culture, religion and belief, interests and ideology. These people live and shape a community and develop certain norms and taboos in order to balance the society. The one who breaches them is pronounced criminal or insane.

Different sociologists have defined it in various ways. Some of the sociologists define that “a society consists of a group of individuals who live in definable community and share same culture.” In a democratic society, there has always been room for the freedom of speech while democracy is a form or system of government where common people choose their rulers by themselves, through vote. The ones who get more votes claim the rule. “In a democracy, poor people have more power than that of rich, because there are more of them, and will of majority is supreme” as Aristotle has said.

Freedom of the speech is the basic right of human beings, and therefore, it is the fundamental of a democratic society. Every person ever lived on the planet has his/her own ideas and emotions preserved in mind and the heart. Thus, they could be different. Beauty of a democracy is in the generously accepting these ideas and emotions and allowing these people to express them in their own way.

When we talk about the people living together, we cannot avoid discussing power. Throughout the recorded human history, it could be observed that whenever people have lived in a society, they have been involved in power games and societal divisions. These divisions were made sometimes based on the power. Power could be defined as “the ability to suppress someone by any means.” This power is gained by bodily strength, intellectual strength, economic strength, political strength etc. The most dangerous and prevailing of all is the political power.

The recorded human history has witnessed that people with political power have always oppressed the common and poor people of the society. Due to this, political power has always been the most wanted of all by people of every clique, whether it is religious or economic. The most undermined of all has been the power of intellect, which Plato has given stress. In Plato’s democracy, the right to vote is only to those who could use it with just way. He in his book ‘Republic’ argues that for a ruler it is mandatory to be intellectual and only educated people of the society should be given the right to vote.

On the counter part, today in our society we face the situation otherwise. We consider ourselves the best of all the societies ever lived on earth and yet breach our every code of conduct we have made for easy, say, just and prosper life as a community.  We don’t even honor our intellectuals and due respect. All the previous societies have admired their intellectuals and those, which didn’t admire their intellectuals, have vanished and are on the mere pages of the history forever.

Apparently, we have democracy but no elected government had ever prevailed for long. Same way, we have been blessed with the right of freedom of speech and yet anyone who speaks for truth is abducted. We made laws for safety, and yet violate them by ourselves. We made policies to promote merit yet infringe them. We talk about the supremacy of law and yet demean it by our hypocritical biases.

These norms and taboos, introduced by the society, are for the normal or sane people to follow. Only insane people are allowed to dissipate these norms and taboos. When any normal or sane person breaches these norms, he should be treated as criminal and should be punished for that, or he should be treated as insane and pardoned for his/her mental disorder.  On the other hand, if every person of the society breaches them and is treated as nor criminal neither insane, it means that society has normalized it. However, when the criminal behaviors are normalized in the society, how this society could be a normal one? If the society is not normal, it means that society is insane. We, unfortunately, are living in such an insane society where the criminal behaviors are being treated as sane and normal.

In my opinion, the only way to get rid of this insane society and to build a just society, we require a lot of homework on our educational policy. In addition, we need to foster our intellectuals, raise our education to innovative and advanced standards.
