Noted Sindhi Writer Vasdev Mohi’s Book Selected for Highest Literary Award ‘Saraswati Samman’

New Delhi: Eminent Sindhi writer and poet Shri Vasdev Mohi’s book of short stories “Chequebook” has been selected for “Saraswati Samman 2019”, the highest literary award carrying the cash reward of Rs.1.5 million, a Citation and a Plaque.

The K. K. Birla Foundation had instituted this Award in in 1991 and is considered as the most prestigious and highest literary award of India, given every year on outstanding literary work written by any Indian citizen and published during last ten years, in any Indian language mentioned in Indian constitution.

The “Chequebook”, compilation of short stories of Vasdev Mohi, was published in 2012. Shri Vasdev Mohi is the first ever Sindhi writer of subcontinent having been selected for this prestigious award.

The selection for Saraswati Samman award is made by a high level ‘Chayan Parishad’(Jury) presided over by Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap, former Secretary General of Lok Sabha Secretariat, says a press release issued by Birla Foundation on Thursday.

The books published between the years 2009-2018 were intensively discussed by 22 language committees and they recommended one book each from 22 languages to five Kshetra Samities for further selection. Out of these 22 books, this year six books were recommended by Kshetra Samities to the Chayan Parishad for final selection of one book for the Saraswati Samman 2019 award. These books are (1) Baa (Hindi Novel by Giriraj Kishore); (2) Haq (Punjabi Play by Swarajbir); (3) Chequebook (Sindhi short stories by Vasdev Mohi); (4) Kathakal 2002-2012 (Malayalam – Stories by P. Sachidanandan Anand); (5) Mitabhash Samagra (Assamese – Poetry by Nagen Saikia and (6) Mero Balkanda (Nepali – Autobiographical novel by Rajbahadur Rai).

The Jury in its meeting selected the Sindh short stories book ‘Chequebook’ written by Shri Vasdev Mohi for the Saraswati Samman, press release said.

So far twenty eight writers have been honored with this prestigious award in the earlier years.

Selection of Shri Vasdev Mohi’s book for this prestigious award is great honor for Sindhis. Shri Vasdev was born on March 02, 1944 in Mirpur Khas, Sindh. He did masters in English from Gujarat University and joined the academic profession to teach English at Indian High School Dubai. He retired as Lecturer and Head of English department. He has authored 25 books of poetry, stories, translations etc. He also wrote critical essays and papers for many national and international literary seminars. Previously too, he had received several literary awards including Sahitya Academy Award and Lifetime Achievement Award of Sindhi Academy. (PR)
