People of Lyari stage demo against water and power mafias

Demo was organized by Shehri Awami Mahaz as its week-long protest movement

Karachi: Protest demonstration against non-availability of water and electricity and over billing was Saturday held at the old bus stand, Lee Market, Lyari Karachi by the Shehri Awami Mahaz.

The participants of the demo chanted slogans demanding water and electricity.

The main slogan was “give water and electricity or leave the chair”.

The speakers said that people of Karachi reject the overbilling electricity and theft of water by tanker mafia.

They added that K-Electric should be handed over to peoples for administrative purpose.

Addressing the protesters, organizers also said that Lyari and Kharadar were oldest areas area of the city but power outage in these old City area lasted for 12 to 14 hours due to which the residents here were longing for a drop of water. Same was the situation in other areas of Karachi especially of working class settlements where hours long load shedding and lack of water had made the lives of million in hell.

Speakers in the protest were Nasir Mansoor (National Trade Union Federation Pakistan), Khaliq Zadran (Liyari Awami Mahaz), Zehra Khan (Home Based Women Workers), Zahida Mukhtira (United HB Workers Union), M. Sharif (Baloch Welfare Association), Abdul Rehman (Shahmir Welfare Trust), Zubair Ur Rahman (Columnist) and Qazi Khizar ( human rights activist).
