Social Media: Merits and Demerits

The excessive use of internet and so called applications on iPhone and other similar devices have brought about major impacts on living of the youth. A recent survey revealed that every day an average teenager spends 8 to 10 hours on social networks purposeless.

The social media is the world of Netizens – the members of the internet-using community, which plays a pivotal role in this modern society. The social media is the means of communication between the humans or sharing information with the access to internet that occurs through the medium of computer, tablet or mobile phones. Social media enables to share ideas, content, information and news at a much faster speed. It is becoming one of the largest means of communication and is gaining popularity rapidly. In last few years social media has grown tremendously at an unexpectedly fast rate and has captured millions of users around the world. To know the knowledge at short span of time you at least become the man of digital world so as to live with new age and be the part of this so-called global village. It is the miracle of social media that it connects the world even though you are far away to their reach. The machinery of media gets you informed about every single minute occurrence in your surroundings. It is said that if you do not have a digital presence than for some people you do not exist.

It is undeniable that we cannot ignore that social media is one of the biggest element present in our lives. It can alter the status quo and bring tangible change in the minds of people of all the ages.

The tactical use of social media is very imperative because it could break the economy or soar at the high level. It is also said that there is no greater force for democracy than social media, as this empowers the masses. The social media has a far reaching impact on the today’s youth too, as they are the ones who are most active on social networking sites.

When Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg launched the in February 2004, even he could not imagine the forces it would unleash. His intent was to connect college students. Facebook, which what this website rapidly evolved into, ended up connecting the world. And to mention the other social network in its competition the Twitter, which was created in 2008, has become an irreplaceable part of media and the internet, as millions of users type out short text-based messages to their ‘followers’, who can then like, respond, and retweet these messages. But Twitter is not a just toy, or an amusement, it’s a major source of information. Mainstream media disseminate news and analysis through their digital platform, as politicians and government officials use the site to engage in digital diplomacy and connect with worldwide audiences; users seek out debate, conversation, and education on all subjects possible.

Today, around 336 million people worldwide use Twitter every day, and it has become so important that it’s being used to influence the outcomes of elections and other significant events. Opinion influences action, and with software tools at the hands of hackers or social media teams, messages can be spread so much that users can be made to believe that they are true, and act on them, the diatribe propaganda is hurled at many folds.

It is beyond doubt that before the creation of social media we were hardly aware about the history and culture of other nations, the people of neighboring countries were less connected to the business and exchange of knowledge but today after the creation of tools and applications of social media that our youth uses is source of integrating one another by using Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTalk and messenger.

The threats and fears of social media are imminent in youngsters and in the new generation. As does every advancing technology, social media has created many new problems. It is commonly addictive and provides a tool for stalking the meek youth. Social media is used by extremists to solicit and brain wash recruits. And it exposes us and our friends to unsavory spying. We may leave our lights on in the house when we are on the vacation, but through social media we tell criminals who may want to rob us exactly where we are, when we plan to return home, and how to blackmail us.

We record our thoughts, emotions, likes and dislikes on Facebook; we share our political views, social preferences and plans. We post intimate photographs of ourselves. We tell on blog websites our friends’ names, email addresses and contact numbers, and we tag photographs without any prior information about its proper use. And as computers become more powerful, they will be able to analyze our social media information and correlate it with what our friends and acquaintances say about us. Above all are the aforesaid negative impacts of social media that surmount our youth.

The hysteria, however, delineates that the latest development may not necessarily be what is best for our youth and the society. The use of improper social media can become a lethal weapon. The excessive use of internet and so called applications on iPhone and other similar devices have brought about major impacts on living of the youth. A recent survey revealed that every day an average teenager spends 8 to 10 hours on social networks purposeless. Moreover, hours’ long social network usage eats up the time that could be spent with friends or family. Time wasted in making inordinate messages and fake news is detrimental to the personal relations too.

It is accepted that the social media has some positive factors assimilating the youth with information and deliberation. The knowledge of self-consciousness is the most important feature that we have mainstreamed in our youth via social media i.e. getting back to be most bright side, major positive changes are happening in fields such as healthcare because of use of social media. And to the global research at Google search engine, researchers can track the spread of diseases across the world.

Patients are able to converse with others who have had the same ailments as they now have and learn which remedies or methods worked for others and which did not. The people all over the world are providing each other with advice and moral support. People will use social networks that are special purpose, geared towards local communities, and in local languages. It connects neighborhoods by allowing them to exchange information about culture, science, theology and architecture etc. This is proven fact that we are rapidly changing and moving towards exponential change to the transitional world.

It is therefore highly recommended that the proper use and censored networks of social media can be highly productive. The youth is very receptive to learn from our daily actions and activities. If we make a solid and purposeful communication with young generation then we shall have valuable future in our hand. The social media is a tool making social network which can form the positive minds as well as negative. It is the responsibility of the state to ensure the rights and protection of her citizen from any danger which is provoked by hackers of social media and their big giants.
