Tajikistan has strongly condemned the airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities on June 22. The statement, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan was reported by Asiaplus.tj.

In its official declaration, the Tajik Foreign Ministry emphasized that such actions pose a serious threat to both regional and global security, warning they could trigger a large-scale military conflict with dangerous consequences for the Middle East and the wider international community.

“The Republic of Tajikistan, reaffirming its commitment to the principles and norms of international law, expresses deep concern over the sharp escalation of tensions and calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities,” the statement reads.

Dushanbe appealed to the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and other respected international bodies to take urgent and decisive action to prevent further destabilization. The appeal also urged efforts to avert potential environmental and humanitarian disasters that could result from strikes on sensitive nuclear facilities.

The Foreign Ministry underlined that all disagreements and international disputes must be resolved solely through political and diplomatic means, in full accordance with international law and with respect for state sovereignty.

Tajikistan also voiced its support for global efforts to reduce tensions and restore sustainable peace and stability in the Middle East. The statement reflects the country’s broader foreign policy stance centered on non-intervention and adherence to peaceful conflict resolution.

Following Iran’s violation of Pakistani airspace, Pakistan has recalled its ambassador from Iran and asked the Iranian ambassador, currently visiting his country, not to return to Islamabad for the time being.

“Pakistan has decided to recall its ambassador from Iran and that the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan who is currently visiting Iran may not return for the time being,” Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said while addressing a press briefing in Islamabad on Wednesday January 17, 2024.

The development comes after Tehran targeted the bases of, what it claimed, a terrorist organization — Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) inside Pakistani territory with drones and missiles, and destroyed the headquarters of the said terrorist group, as reported by Iranian state media.

The attacks killed two children and injured three girls on the Pakistani side, as per the Foreign Office.

Calling it an “unprovoked and blatant” breach of Pakistan’s sovereignty by Iran, Islamabad termed the move as a violation of international law and the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

“This illegal act is completely unacceptable and has no justification whatsoever. Pakistan reserves the right to respond to this illegal act. The responsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran,” Baloch said.

Furthermore, the spokesperson also revealed that Islamabad has decided to suspend all high-level visits that were ongoing or were planned between Pakistan and Iran in the coming days.

Earlier, warning Tehran of “serious consequences”, the Foreign Office had lamented that the “unacceptable violation” of Pakistani sovereignty took place despite the existence of several channels of communication between the two neighboring countries.

Islamabad has already communicated strong condemnation of Tehran’s move to the Iranian Charge d’affaires who was told that the consequences of such an unprovoked move lie squarely with Iran.

Reiterating Pakistan’s stance on coordinated action against the scourge of terrorism, the spokesperson had underscored that such unilateral acts are not in conformity with good neighborly relations and can seriously undermine bilateral trust and confidence.

In just a matter of weeks, some 5,500 women are due to give birth in Gaza, where doctors in overstretched hospitals are delivering babies with little or no anesthesia – sometimes by the light of mobile phones.

As the conflict between Israel and Hamas militants enters a second month, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and sister agencies continue to appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire and an increase in convoys bringing food, fuel, water and other desperately needed aid into the enclave.

Laila Baker, Regional Director for the Arab States at the sexual and reproductive health agency, said she.

Supporting mums-to-be

Staff from UNFPA have been providing emergency health and safe delivery kits to mothers-to-be “when we can reach them”, she said.

She told UN News that pregnant Palestinian women fleeing bombardment are riddled with anxiety, but also hope and happiness, as they struggle to find qualified health professionals who can support them with a safe delivery.

“Put yourself in the shoes of that woman when the surgeon says to her ‘I have no anesthesia, I don’t even have water or soap to wash my hands, but I’m going to try and save your life,’” she said.

Speaking from Cairo, Ms. Baker outlined why a humanitarian ceasefire and stronger international response are needed now in Gaza.

She said it is an unprecedented and unparalleled brutality in the history of humanity in recent times: 2.2 million people, amongst them 50,000 pregnant women, besieged for one month. 5,500 women are going to give birth within the next few weeks. And for the 160 women who I should have said are lucky today to try and bring joy and life into this world, I fear for their lives and the lives of their children.

Over 135 health facilities have been targeted. The remaining health facilities that stay standing have very little medication, no fuel to run electricity. We’ve had caesarean sections for emergency deliveries that have been done with little or no anesthesia and on occasion only with the light from a mobile phone.

And yet, the world leaders seem paralyzed to be able to intervene on what is one of the most flagrant breaches of human rights and international humanitarian law – by besieging and constantly bombarding the Gaza Strip.
