By Shoukat Lohar

In the land of Sindh,

Once so serene,

A brutal murder, so cruel and obscene,

Tribalism and racism, blind and deaf,

Snatched away a pearl, leaving nothing but bereft.

Dr. Ajmal, a beacon of wisdom and light,

A lily flower, blooming with love so bright,

Knowledge and humbleness, his guiding star,

But now, his voice is silenced, his light afar.

Only vampires around, thirsty for blood,

Innocent people, their victims in the mud,

Feudalism, savagery, barbarity, so rife,

Dragon-like, they breathe fire and take innocent life.

How do we save our children from this plight?

From the darkness and the never-ending night,

We must fight with words, with love and with might,

And banish this evil from our sight.

Oh, Ajmal, your memory will live on,

In the hearts of those you have touched and known,

May your light continue to shine and guide,

As we strive to create a world that is dignified.

May your blood be last nail in coffin of tribalism and racism!!!

[*According to initial reports, Dr. Ajmal was assassinated due to tribal feud, however the FIR, lodged by his brother, says ‘Dr. Ajmal refused to pay Rs.2 million in extortion to accused Aijaz Ali Sundrani and he threatened him with dire consequences. Aijaz Ali Sundrani had made multiple demands for the money and had threatened that if Sawand continued to refuse, he would kidnap him. On April 6, Ajmal and his brother were traveling to their village at around 7am when Aijaz with some other armed assailants on motorbikes stopped their Toyota Corolla car registration number BKX-378, the FIR reads.

This tragedy serves as a reminder of the challenges that Sindhis face in their pursuit of progress and development

Umar Memon

Ajmal Sawand was a highly accomplished individual who achieved great success in academia. He obtained a PhD from France and wrote various articles that were cited by more than 150 other authors in their peer reviewed articles. He completed his Master’s and PhD studies on a scholarship from the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. Currently, he was an Assistant Professor at Sukkur IBA. His academic achievements should have been a source of pride for his community and country, but unfortunately, his life was cut short by tribal ignorance and violence. This tragedy serves as a reminder of the challenges that Sindhis face in their pursuit of progress and development.

Tribalism has created a culture of violence and revenge. Tribes often seek retribution for perceived wrongs, leading to a cycle of violence that can be difficult to break. This violence has a detrimental effect on the province, as it leads to instability and undermines the rule of law.

The murder of Ajmal Sawand is a crime that is difficult to comprehend. How could someone with such potential and talent be killed in such a brutal way? It is a tragedy that speaks to the deep-rooted problems that exist in Sindh, where tribalism and ignorance have taken hold and threaten to tear the province apart.

Ajmal’s murder should serve as a wake-up call to the people of Sindh. It is time to recognize that these tribal groups and bandits are not our friends, but our enemies. They are holding us back and preventing us from achieving our full potential as a nation. They are destroying the very fabric of our society, and we must take action to stop them.

One of the most tragic aspects of Ajmal’s murder is the fact that he was a highly educated individual, with a PhD in one of the most important fields of our time. His accomplishment should have been celebrated as a shining example of what is possible when we invest in education and provide opportunities for our youth. Instead, he became a victim of the very ignorance and tribalism that he was trying to overcome.

It is time for the residents of Sindh to wake up and realize the gravity of the situation. They must understand that the province has been handed over to ignorant tribal groups and bandits, who are tearing it apart piece by piece. If they do not act soon, Sindh will be consumed by this ignorance and tribal quarrels, and there will be nothing left to salvage.

The murder of Ajmal Sawand is a tragedy that should not be forgotten. It should serve as a reminder of the urgent need to address the challenges facing Sindh, including tribalism, ignorance, and violence. We must work together to create a society that values education and progress, and that rejects the narrow-mindedness of tribalism and ignorance. We owe it to the memory of Ajmal Sawand, and to the youth of our nation, to create a better future for Sindh.

Ajmal Sawand’s legacy as a bright and talented scholar should serve as an inspiration to others. He was a symbol of hope and progress in a region that desperately needs it. His untimely death is a loss not just to his family, but to the entire nation. It is our responsibility to ensure that his memory is not forgotten and that his vision of a better future for Sindh is realized.

The educated class of Sindh must recognize the urgent need to take a stand against tribalism and violence in the province. The murder of Ajmal Sawand, a highly accomplished scholar, should serve as a wake-up call to all of us. We cannot allow ignorance and narrow-mindedness to continue to hold us back. It is time for us to work together to create a society that values education and progress, and that rejects the destructive influence of tribalism and violence. We must be the ones to lead the way and set an example for others to follow.

It is only by standing together that we can hope to make a real difference and bring about lasting change in Sindh. Let us honor the memory of Ajmal Sawand by dedicating ourselves to building a better future for our province. Let us use our education and knowledge to fight against the forces of ignorance and narrow-mindedness that seek to divide us. The time to act is now, and the future of Sindh depends on our collective effort.

Feudal system is deeply rooted in Sindh and has devoured its masses

Shoukat Lohar

The brutal murder of Dr. Ajmal Sawand in broad daylight due to a tribal clash in Sindh has shaken the entire nation.

Dr. Sawand was an Assistant Professor at the IBA University Sukkur, and his murder is a tragic reminder of the deep-rooted social and cultural issues prevalent in the country that need to be addressed urgently.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of the educated and enlightened individuals in the country who are working to bring about positive change in society. Dr. Sawand was a highly qualified and respected academic who dedicated his life to educating the youth and empowering them to become agents of change in their communities. His murder is a loss not only for his family but also for the entire academic community.

The tribal clashes that led to Dr. Sawand’s murder are a manifestation of the larger issue of tribalism and feudalism that plagues the country. The feudal system is deeply entrenched in the rural areas of Sindh, where powerful landlords exercise complete control over the lives of their tenants. The feudal lords are known to settle their disputes through violent means, and the innocent civilians often become the victims of their power games.

The government needs to take concrete steps to strengthen the rule of law and ensure that justice is served

The root cause of these tribal conflicts is the lack of education and awareness among the masses. The feudal lords are able to maintain their hold on power by keeping the people uneducated and unaware of their rights. The absence of rule of law and a weak judicial system also exacerbate the situation, as the perpetrators of crimes are rarely held accountable for their actions.

The murder of Dr. Sawand has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from all segments of society. The government has promised to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice, but this is easier said than done. The feudal lords and their henchmen are known to have strong political connections, and they often use their influence to evade justice.

To address this issue, the government needs to take concrete steps to strengthen the rule of law and ensure that justice is served. The judicial system needs to be reformed to make it more efficient and transparent, and the police force needs to be strengthened to ensure that they can effectively investigate and prosecute crimes. The government also needs to invest in education and awareness campaigns to empower the people and enable them to stand up for their rights.

The judicial system needs to be reformed to make it more efficient and transparent

In addition to these structural reforms, there is also a need for a change in societal attitudes towards tribalism and feudalism. The people need to be educated on the negative impact of these practices on society, and the values of equality, justice, and human rights need to be promoted. The media can play a crucial role in this regard by highlighting the issue and bringing it to the forefront of public discourse.

The murder of Dr. Sawand is a tragic reminder of the work that still needs to be done to build a just and equitable society in Pakistan. The government, civil society, and the public at large need to come together to address the root causes of tribalism and feudalism and work towards building a society where every citizen has the opportunity to live a life of dignity and respect.

Background of feudalism

Feudalism was a social and economic system that emerged in medieval Europe in the 9th and 10th centuries, and lasted until the 15th century. It was characterized by a hierarchical society in which a lord granted land, called a fief, to a vassal in exchange for loyalty, military service, and other obligations.

Causes

Invasions and instability: The fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD led to political instability and invasions by various groups, including Vikings and Magyars. As a result, people turned to local lords for protection, leading to the rise of feudalism. Decentralization of power: With the decline of central authority, power shifted to local lords who controlled the land and the people who worked on it. Agricultural developments: Technological advances in agriculture increased productivity, leading to surpluses that could be used to support a ruling class.

Consequences

Social hierarchy: Feudalism established a strict social hierarchy, with the king at the top, followed by lords, vassals, knights, and peasants. This hierarchy determined social status and relationships between people.

Economic system: The feudal system created a hierarchical economic system, in which land and labor were the main sources of wealth. Landowners extracted surplus from the labor of their tenants and serfs.

Military obligation: The feudal system created a military obligation, with lords and vassals providing soldiers and knights to protect the land and to fight in wars. Lack of mobility: The feudal system limited social mobility, with people being born into their class and having limited opportunities to move up.

Decline

The feudal system declined with the rise of centralized monarchies and the growth of urban centers, which weakened the power of the nobility and created new economic opportunities.

But it still deeply rooted in Sindh and now and it has devoured its masses.

In conclusion, the murder of Dr. Ajmal Sawand is a heinous crime that must be strongly condemned. It is a stark reminder of the deep-seated social and cultural issues prevalent in the country that need urgent attention. The government needs to take concrete steps to strengthen the rule of law, invest in education and awareness campaigns, and work towards changing societal attitudes towards tribalism and feudalism.

It is only through such collective efforts that we can hope to build a just and equitable society where the rights of every citizen are respected and protected.

Gayetri passed a test for MBBS in China but was offered only 25% scholarship; she also passed IBA Sukkur test for BBA but again poverty barred her.

She always topped exams from primary to class 12 to make her father’s dream come true.

Nasir Aijaz

The 17-year Gayetri Punu Darawar’s father Dileep Kumar lived in abject poverty. He neither could study further beyond graduation nor got a job, but even then dreamt a good future for his children – and for that he worked as a peasant at the local landowners’ fields, and sparing some time he also did cobbling to earn something extra to get his children educated.

“My father often said ‘I’m graduate but the poverty put barriers and failed me to move ahead, making me continue toiling. But I want to see you living a successful life after getting higher education’,” Gayetri told Sindh Courier from a remote village Bozdar Wada of Taluka Kotdiji, district Khairpur. The village, consisting of about one hundred houses, is located some 40km off Kotdiji town.

Being eldest of her siblings – two sisters and a brother, and sentient to the hard work her father had been doing for the family, Gayetri focused on studies so that her father’s dream comes true. “In spite of hardships, my father got me enrolled in school for education. I never frustrated him, as I always topped in the class since childhood,” she told.

“We don’t have electricity at home, but I used to study at nights in the light of mobile phone torch. Even the swarms of mosquitoes and insects couldn’t distract me,” she added.

Sharing Dileep Kumar’s struggle for arduous task of ensuring uninterrupted education to his daughter, Gayetri said, “When I did matriculation, father enrolled me at the government college, located at about two kilometers from our village. He used to take me to and from the college daily on a bicycle. Since there is no road between the village and the college, he had to ride through narrow paths of fields, which became more difficult during the rains and at the time when the landowners released water for irrigating the crops.”

“Again I passed intermediate in A-grade, and started preparing for a test to get selected for scholarship and study MBBS in China. A Multan-based institution conducted the test, which I passed but unfortunately only 25 percent scholarship was offered,” she said sharing the letter which read:

“Congrats, Dear! Gayetry – (Application ID= 1350) you got 51 % Marks in MBBS Scholarship Test. On behalf of this result, you got 25% scholarship on 1st Year / Semester Tuition fee. Contact us for further details about universities and admission guideline or visit our office along with your original documents.”

“Just imagine. How can a poor peasant and cobbler afford rest of the huge amount, who hardly earns two-time meal for 7-member family including our disabled grandmother,” she said.

The government or any philanthropist should come forward and sponsor the higher studies of Gayetri Punu Darawar.

The village has 30 percent literacy rate among the females, as there is a government high school, where her sisters and younger brother are enrolled. But the Gayetri is the only girl of the village having passed intermediate and had been among the Top Ten students in Sukkur Education Board Examinations.

“For seeking good numbers in the examination, I got admission at a tuition center, but at the time of payment of fee, my father literally wept being unable to pay. But a kind hearted man – Dr. Naseer Bozdar helped us, to whom we will always be grateful.”

When Sindh Courier asked if she attempted for admission in any local university, Gayetri said, “Yes, I also appeared in IBA Sukkur test for BBA, but the same issue – we were unable to afford the fee.”

“I do not demand shelter, bread or clothes – just want education. I want help from the government or any philanthropist to sponsor my education. I want to make my career, and help my parents and the poor of my village,” Gayetri Punu earnestly said.

“My dream is to become such an educated person who helps those who can’t study because I studied very difficultly. My father is cobbler so I want to see him have a good life, see my parents, relatives and villagers happy.”

Now Gayetri Punu Darawar is facing the same problem – poverty has become a main barrier to her education like her father. Sindh Courier expects some government authorities or any philanthropist to come forward and help this girl.

The Consul General led a delegation to strengthen the many existing ties between the United States and Pakistan this year, celebrating 75 years of enduring bilateral relations, a press release said on Friday.

One of the highlights of the Consul General’s visit was his discussion with women entrepreneurs from Sukkur and Larkana who took part in two U.S. Government-funded programs, Academy for Women Entrepreneurs and Qadam Barhao. The entrepreneurs participating in the programs cited how the programs helped them launch and grow their businesses. They also discussed some of the challenges and opportunities women face in starting and running a business while also highlighting their desire to empower fellow women entrepreneurs. While in Khairpur, Consul General Stroh announced the next round of applications for AWE is open until April 15, 2022. “The Academy for Women Entrepreneurs and Qadam Barhao are examples of the United States’ commitment to further develop women’s entrepreneurship, women’s financial inclusion, and women’s equality,” remarked Consul General Stroh. “Empowering women is a strategic investment in our communities, our countries, and the world.”

Reinforcing the United States’ long-term commitment to advancing education in Pakistan, Consul General Stroh toured Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) and Sukkur IBA University. His discussions with the respective universities’ leadership, SALU Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalil Ibupoto and Sukkur IBA Vice Chancellor Dr. Mir Muhammad Shah, underscored the importance both the United States and Pakistan place on higher education. The strategic focus of U.S.-Pakistan university partnerships is to spur economic development by strengthening academic research and people-to-people exchanges, which create a more educated and skilled labor market. The U.S. recently funded a SALU partnership with a consortium of universities belonging to Michigan’s University Research Corridor to strengthen the research culture. Previously, the Consulate also funded Sukkur IBA’s partnership with Johnson County Community College in Kansas to increase access to quality education and vocational training to students in rural areas. The partnership resulted in 14 community colleges being established in Northern Sindh all managed and operated by IBA Sukkur.

Hyderabad: Cambridge / O-Level System will be introduced at Public School Hyderabad from August this year to enhance the standard of education at this historic institution.

Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Muhammad Abbas Baloch, who presided over the online meeting of Public School Hyderabad’s Board of Governance in his office at Shahbaz Building on Thursday, informed that for Cambridge / O-Level system, more teachers would be appointed on merit and with the approval of member of governing body.

Commissioner said that the financial problems of Public School Hyderabad were gradually decreasing, which were very upsetting when this school was handed over to IBA Sukkur. “With the cooperation of Sindh government and the hard work and dedication of all the members and stakeholders, today the organization was moving towards self-sufficiency as salaries and pensions of the employees were being paid regularly and now organization had savings of Rs.50 million,” he told.

Baloch further said that in order to encourage teaching and non-teaching staff, their salaries were being increased from March 2021, which would be paid before Eid. “Earlier non-teaching staff was getting low salaries but now Rs.17500 would be paid to them.”

Commissioner said that some time ago in the meeting of the Board of Governance, it was decided that the pension would not be included in the future appointment agreements “If the financial condition of the school improves further then with the approval of the board members, a mechanism could be made in this regard,” he added.

He said that under the MoU signed between Public School Hyderabad, Government of Sindh and IBA Sukkur to enhance the skills and abilities of teachers, it was decided that the teachers who would pass the training of need assessment test would be given conveyance and medical allowance while the said test was being taken twice a year and this year 28 teachers had passed this test. On this occasion, permission was sought from the Board of Governance for further development works keeping in view the increasing enrollment of Public School Hyderabad.

Additional Commissioner Hyderabad Syed Sajjad Haider Shah, Deputy Director Planning and Development Sanaullah Rind, Principal of Public School Hyderabad, Imran Ahmed Larik, Vice Chancellor IBA Sukkur Syed Mir Mohammad Shah and members of governing body attended the online meeting. (PR)

Commissioner Hyderabad holds meeting to sort out school’s financial and other problems; suggests increasing the fee

Hyderabad: Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Muhammad Abbas Baloch directed the concerned authorities on Wednesday to run the Public School Hyderabad on the pattern of IBA Sukkur’s Community Colleges.

“All the recommendations should be brought before the Board of Governors of Public School so that better decisions could be made for the improvement of the school,” he said while presiding over a meeting convened to sort out the financial and other problems of Public School Latifabad, Hyderabad.

Commissioner said that Public School Hyderabad was a historical and important educational institution and under a Memorandum of Understanding, its administrative control was given to IBA Sukkur for its betterment.

He said that the Public School was facing financial problems and bailout package was given by Sindh government.

The meeting discussed issues of increasing the salaries of teachers, recommendations of Human Resource Committee and recruitment of teachers in future.

Commissioner Hyderabad said that no compromise should be made on the improvement of education in the Public School. Reviewing the fee structure, he suggested increasing the fee as it was very low as compared to other schools. “This would help resolve the financial problems of school.”

The meeting decided to recruit teachers on merit basis through selection board.

Commissioner Hyderabad said that recommendations should be brought in the board of governors to make the salary structure of Public School employees equal to IBA community colleges.

Commissioner Baloch said that the image of the school should be improved which depends on imparting better education. “The grading system in the school should be changed and the teachers who are still working should be promoted on the recommendations of the promotion committee.”
