Spilled Ink: A simple story of complex race dynamics

Washington DC-based pediatrician turned international bestselling novelist Nadia Hashimi’s latest young adult novel, Spilled Ink (Quill Tree Books), is a story of Muslim, Afghan American siblings who face Islamophobia and xenophobia. The book’s writing is simple and straightforward, and can be enjoyed by young adults and grownups alike. Through a personal and engaging style of storytelling, it manages to convey a timely and relevant global message.

Yusuf and Yalda are seventeen-year-old Afghan American twins who live in a small suburban town in Virginia. Like any siblings, the brother and sister have their differences and enjoy playing harmless pranks on each other. One evening, Yalda secretly sneaks out to watch Yusuf performing with his band at a local venue. What’s even more exciting for her is the fact that Yusuf’s friend Keith asks her to go with him. However, the night has some unpleasant surprises in store.

When the opening band makes a racist joke about terrorists, Yusuf decides to take a stand by making an impulsive stunt responding to the hate speech. This gets a lot of mixed reactions from the crowd, and the incident boils over, leading to simmering tensions, controversy, and ultimately violence. Soon, there are videos, comments, and opinions flying all over the place. When people begin to boycott Yusuf and Yalda’s family’s Afghan restaurant, their parents get to know. And when Yusuf goes missing, and is later found seriously injured, everyone is scared.

Being Afghan teens in suburban America

Hashimi is herself the daughter of Afghan immigrants, something that is quite evident from the book’s prose. “The story is also about the truth that while Afghan refugees received during Operation Allies Welcome were not always met with open arms in every American community, there was a remarkable outpouring of hands-on support to soften their landing,” she writes in the author’s note.

In one instance, Yalda ponders what it means to be Afghan. The truth hits her hard—“So many Afghans across decades have been running. Away from violence, away from their homes, away from people they loved,” she muses. At their family restaurant, there is a poster of the National Geographic cover with the cliché photograph of the green-eyed Afghan refugee girl, “the one who haunts every Google search for ‘Afghan girl’.” Yalda’s teacher struggles with pronouncing her name correctly and asks her if she’s Middle Eastern or Persian. Even though she was born in the US, she routinely gets such reactions from people, and is also used to explaining herself to them.

Read: The Forgotten Female Sufi Masters of the Afghan Empire

Further, it is obvious to Yalda that her parents are more conservative and strict; dating and relationships are taboo subjects, quite in contrast with the parents of many of her friends. Even though Keith feels that Yusuf and Yalda don’t look religious or extreme, Yalda wonders if he would change his opinion of her if he saw her in a headscarf at a masjid. While telling him about their family’s winter solstice holiday, which she is incidentally named after, she even wonders whether she is nothing but a curiosity to him instead of a crush.

Making sense of hate crimes

“I think of the young man in a gray suit and a soft pink tie, a smile that tells you he was the life of the party. The mom of six shot on the sidewalk of her quiet neighborhood. The three young adults who had been playing a board game were summoned outside and shot by an irate neighbor.” These are some of the thoughts that run through Yalda’s mind as she ponders about repeated incidents of people being attacked for being Muslim post-9/11.

Thousands of hate crime incidents are reported in the U.S. every year. The author notes that such incidents occur in supposedly safe places, such as homes, roads, schools, restaurants, and playgrounds. These usually show up in the form of graffiti or hate speeches as well as physical or emotional violence, especially post-9/11.

The book spotlights one such incident

Buried in the story is this reality of hate and fear portrayed sensitively through the journey of one family. When Yusuf becomes a victim of a hate crime, there is fortunately an outpouring of sympathy, support, and prayers for him.

In her author’s note at the end of the book, Hashmi writes, “We are imperfect creatures and too often approach others with assumptions and stereotypes, stigmas and hesitation. But we are also artists in a way, creating our stories and drawing connections. We are continually evolving beings at every stage of our lives and judgment can give way to grace.”

Read – Book Review: Afghanistan’s Rocky Road Ahead: What needs to be done?

Identity is an essential part in shaping the artist’s conscience, awareness, thought, and art, says Egyptian artist Fadwa Attia Mohamed

[Fadwa Attia Mohamed, born on December 22, 1976, in Cairo, Egypt, has specialization in Photography, Oil Painting and Decorative Theater. She did bachelors from the Faculty of Applied Arts, Major- Décor in 2000. She is member of the Association of Applied Arts Designers and the Cairo Atelier for artists and writers. She is Head of the Department of Fine Arts Palace of Child Culture of the Ministry of Culture. Several exhibitions of her work have been held nationally and internationally. She has published articles of the Cultural surrounding in the Ministry of Culture and ready to issue a collection of short stories. She is winner of dozens of awards and certificates.]

Fadwa Attia speaks about the role of the artist and his identity in society through the various arts: theater, cinema, television, fine art, and others.

What is the current role of the artist in his society? Does he need to consciously understand how to use his artistic and cultural identity?

Yes, he needs it. Identity is an essential part in shaping the artist’s conscience, awareness, thought, and art. This is not easy. On the contrary, it requires an educated artist who has a real awareness of the meaning of intellectual, cultural, artistic, and other identity.

So we need that awareness of identity in order to make it an integrated role in society, in addition to the presence of other elements with it: originality, modernity, etc., which makes us able to understand its importance to the true, honest creator, even if this creator is an amateur or an obscure person. This makes us contemplate, and contemplation stabilizes the sense of identity. All of them are key elements for building a true identity with a clear concept for everyone and society, and make the artist of real value in his art. This brings us to the established fact that art without identity is alien to us, or was it our choice to be influenced by what was around us?

Perhaps for reasons I mentioned previously, there is something new every day, rapid development every second, faster technology, continuous technological development, globalization and artificial intelligence. This makes us race against time, so we are to review what we receive in terms of cultures and cultural, intellectual and technological development, especially at the present time, which are all endless challenges.

Is there enough time for us now to review the various arts we offer in theatre, cinema, visual art, singing, religious chanting, and television drama?

I give one answer: I don’t think so. Times have changed, standards and concepts have changed, and everything has changed. Even the level of our daily dialogue has become rapid. We really need to review it.

Within ourselves, different arts came to us from abroad, and we began to want art and receive it quickly. You see, for example, that different arts can be presented on different platforms on the Internet, whatever the series, films, etc. The virtual world has appeared and changed the features of our lives. For example, an episode on Facebook presents… One of them was an artist in five minutes, and now we have what is known as the condensed, useful center in episodes lasting from five to ten minutes. Some of them present their art without providing an identity, for the sake of fame or money.

READ: THE WAY OF BEAUTY – THE COLOR WORLDS OF ITALIAN ARTIST MARIO NARCISO

There has become a real crisis, as we do not understand what is presented to us and to future generations.

If change is required, but with real awareness and understanding, it starts with the artist in turn, who is the one who raises awareness of society through art, as art is a message. The recipient of all types of arts loves to see what he understands and discuss its issues, but in a useful summary, because we have become in the age of speed, it is necessary to change while keeping pace with what is new in this era, and this makes us accept everything new with open arms. Therefore, we will present different solutions from refining talents, building ideas in light of the era of globalization, and developing human development.

Understanding the relationship between language and identity can help us appreciate the diversity of human experience, foster greater understanding and respect for diverse cultures and traditions

SHOUKAT LOHAR

Language and identity are inextricably linked, as the language we speak often plays a significant role in shaping our sense of self and our cultural identity. Our language not only enables us to communicate with others, but it also reflects our beliefs, values, and cultural heritage.

Language is an essential component of our identity, as it reflects our cultural background, personal history, and social status. Our language is often the primary means through which we express ourselves, and it shapes our worldview and how we perceive ourselves and others. Our language helps us communicate our thoughts and feelings and allows us to connect with others who share our cultural background and experiences.

Language also plays a significant role in shaping our cultural identity. Our language is often tied to our cultural heritage, traditions, and history. For example, the French language is closely associated with French culture, cuisine, and history. Similarly, the Spanish language is closely tied to Spanish culture, music, and art. Our language helps us connect with our cultural heritage and reinforces our sense of belonging.

Language also reflects our social identity, as it can be a marker of social status, education, and profession. For example, the use of formal language can be an indicator of education and professionalism, while the use of slang or dialect can highlight regional or social affiliations.

The language that we use can signal our place in society and how we are perceived by others.

Language and identity are also influenced by social and political factors. In some cases, language can be a tool of oppression, used to marginalize minority groups and suppress their cultural identity. For example, during the colonial period, European powers imposed their languages on colonized peoples, often resulting in the erosion of local languages and cultural traditions. In other cases, language can be used as a tool of empowerment, helping marginalized groups reclaim their cultural identity and resist assimilation.

The relationship between language and identity is also complex and multifaceted, as language can both reflect and shape our identity. Our language can reflect our cultural background and personal history, but it can also shape how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. For example, speaking a language that is associated with a particular culture can reinforce a sense of belonging to that culture, while speaking a language that is not associated with a particular culture can lead to a sense of cultural dislocation.

Last words

Language and identity are closely intertwined, as our language reflects our cultural heritage, personal history, and social identity. Our language shapes how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us, and it can be used as a tool of empowerment or oppression. Understanding the complex relationship between language and identity can help us appreciate the diversity of human experience and foster greater understanding and respect for diverse cultures and traditions.
