Encroachments on 250 acres at Malir River, 389 acres in Jacobabad, 573 acres in Shikarpur, 38 acres in Larkana and 149 acres in Jamshoro have also been removed  

Sindh Chief Secretary preside over meeting to review anti-encroachment drive, wheat procurement, price control, anti-polio campaign and other key issues

Karachi: A meeting, presided over by Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah on Monday, was informed that encroachments from 3082 acres of irrigation lands have been removed in Karachi besides 250 acres of land at Malir River.

The Deputy Commissioners of respective districts informed that encroachments on 389 acres in Jacobabad, 573 acres in Shikarpur, 38 acres in Larkana and 149 acres in Jamshoro have also been removed.

All the commissioners and deputy commissioners informed the meeting regarding ongoing drive of removal of encroachments from irrigation lands and price control.

Regarding the price control, it was informed that a fine of Rs.32,81,700 has been imposed on 636 shops and shopping centers in different areas of Karachi. A fine of Rs.52,500 was imposed on 493 shops in Larkana, Rs.51,100 on 258 shops in Tando Allahyar and Rs.127,200 on 407 shops in Sukkur.

Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah said that prices should be controlled and crackdown should be carried out against profiteers before and during the Ramadan.

Mumtaz Ali Shah directed all the Deputy Commissioners to submit a report on price control and action against profiteers every week. He directed all the commissioners and deputy commissioners to monitor the polio campaign. He urged that the target of procurement of wheat should be completed in any case.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Services Saeed Ahmed Mangnajo, Food Secretary Abdul Haleem Sheikh, Secretary Irrigation and all the Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of districts. (PR)

Anti-encroachment drive launched on Thursday on court orders was suspended for two days after death of a man and protest of residents

Dadu: The district administration of Dadu plans to bulldoze 750 homes built at the irrigation department’s land and at the embankments of canals and channels. The action is being taken to remove encroachments from the lands as per directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Executive Engineer irrigation Lutufullah said that in first phase 150 homes would be demolished built at the embankments of Phakka and Jagir channels from Shahjahan Park to Panj More and in second phase more 600 hundred homes would be demolished on Dadu canal’s both sides from Panj More to Siyal More.

Following the court directives, the district administration of Dadu started anti-encroachment drive on Thursday to vacate the irrigation land and clear the embankment of Dadu Canal and its channels however it was suspended for two days by the Deputy Commissioner due to protest of residents and death of an aged man.

The anti-encroachment team was led by Assistant Commissioner Dadu Muhammad Ali Lund. Executive Engineer of Irrigation Department Lutufulallah, Mukthiarkar Dadu Abdul Hameed Khokar, DSP City, Anti-Encroachment SHO and lady police were also part of operation.

The authorities used heavy machinery to demolish homes of people who had illegally constructed homes on both sides of Phaka and Jagir channels.

Using bulldozers the team demolished the home of Ameer Jamali who had already vacated it.

During the operation a large number of men and women of the area staged sit-in and laid in front of bulldozers and demanded to stop demolishing their homes.

Laborer Muhammad Ali Mallah, one of the protesters, said that two years ago same operation was lunched by district administration and 180 homes were demolished but former Deputy Commissioner Shahzaman Khuhro and MNA Rafique Ahmed Jamali had assured on behalf of Chief Minister that victims, whose homes were demolished, would get free plots in Benazir Basti but neither DC nor MNA fulfilled their promise and plots were allotted to their own men.

He said that now they had constructed their three homes after getting loan but once again the government wants to demolish their homes, which is injustice with poor families. He warned that if their homes are demolished they would be compelled to commit suicide.

Ms. Pathani, another protester, said that the court had directed officials that they should first provide shelter before removing encroachments but even then poor people are being targeted.

During the protest, an aged man Muhammad Umar Joyo died at his home due to heart attack. Deceased’s heir and neighbors alleged that man had died due to shock of his home being demolished.

One Ghulam Ali Mallah told that two years ago during operation two aged women Shabana Mallah,  Gulshan Mallah and 12-year girl Sorath had died but no one helped them except making tall claims by elected MNA.

Later, DC Dadu Samiulallah Shaikh gave two-day time to the residents to leave their homes and warned that in case of violation FIRs would be lodged against them and they would be held responsible if any untoward incident took place.

Anti-encroachment drive will begin in all the nine districts of Hyderabad division within few days

The irrigation department’s land, banks of canals and watercourses will be cleared of illegal constructions; Commissioner Hyderabad issues directives to ensure implementation of court orders

Hyderabad: Commissioner Hyderabad Division Muhammad Abbas Baloch has ordered removal of all the illegal constructions and other encroachments from the irrigation department’s land and banks of canals and watercourses in nine districts of the division.

“No one should be allowed to have permanent or temporary construction on state land,” he directed while presiding over a follow up meeting regarding the encroachments on government land on Saturday at his office attended by the Deputy Commissioners of various districts of the division through video link.

He said that respective district administrations should coordinate with other line departments to remove all the remaining illegal construction on the state land.

Commissioner urged the Deputy Commissioners to ensure immediate and effective action for the removal of all illegal structures built on the irrigation canals and water courses. He also directed officials of irrigation department to contact the respective Deputy Commissioners of their district and provide the details of encroachment on canals and irrigation department land as the effective and timely actions could be taken against the encroachers.

He also asked the Deputy Commissioners to hold meetings with the irrigation department officials of their respective districts at the earliest so that effective plan can be devised and implemented.

Commissioner also directed for the formation of anti-encroachment committees headed by the Deputy Commissioners at the district level to remove the encroachments from the state land so that the decisions of courts could be implemented in letter and spirit.

On the occasion, Chief Engineer Irrigation Haji Khan Jamali briefed in the meeting and informed that in first phase, all the remaining encroachments on the irrigation canals, water courses, protective dykes, and routes leading to canals will be removed by the end of February 28, 2021. For this, he said, more support from respective district administration will be needed.

He further told that the notices have also been issued to the encroachers after identifying the state/irrigation land illegally occupied by them.

Deputy Commissioner Hyderabad Fuad Ghafar Soomro, who attended the meeting personally, assured full support and cooperation with irrigation department to remove the encroachments on irrigation land and canals in district Hyderabad. He requested Chief Engineer to share the details of encroachers of Hyderabad district who were served with the notices, so as strict actions could be taken accordingly.

The Deputy Commissioners of Badin, Dadu, Sujawal, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Matiyari, Jamshoro and Thatta attended the video conference and assured full support and cooperation to irrigation department for the anti-encroachment drive.

Managing Director, SIDA, Wali Muhammad Naich, Deputy Director Planning and Development Sanaullah Rind and other officials also attended the meeting. (PR)
