Non-competition program of the strategic vision group “Russia – Islamic World” within the XX “Altyn Minbar” Kazan International Film Festival presents 10 films from 10 countries.

This year non-competition section includes films made in Uzbekistan, Morocco, Iran, Bangladesh, Russia, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Bahrein.

“The program is developed around the cinematography of countries from the strategic vision group “Russia-Islamic World.” As usual, the section includes 10 films. It is interesting to note that Russia is represented by the regional film “All at Once,” filmed in Dagestan. It has been a long time since Bahraini films appeared on the program. A new shortlist includes the film “Rose Water” from this island state. This year’s “Russia-Islamic World” section did not include co-production projects, but many producing countries have gone beyond the territorial limits of their states. For instance, the plot of the road movie “Paradise” embraces Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kazakhstan. In its turn, the Kazakhstani film “Oliara” is made by Hungarian director Tamash Tot, a VGIK graduate. It is noticeable that national cinema tries to expand its borders. “The Islamic world shows its width, which is fascinating in its way, and marks the tendency of influence and interaction of different cultures”, says the chairman of the executive committee of “Altyn Minbar,” the director of the New Institute of Cultural Studies, candidate of historical sciences, leading scientific fellow, Head of the Department of Development and Assessment of Film Education Techniques at VGIK, expert of the scientific and educational center “Civil Society” and social communications” of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, and laureate of the Russian Government award in the field of education (2021).

According to Nina Kochelyaeva, the main focus like in the main competition is made on human relationships, family values, mentality, traditions, and moral issues: “The program is based on a “cinema of moral anxiety”. Each film is based on the characters’ images, who are not indifferent to what is happening and deal with moral issues. When the characters find themselves in weird situations, their moral dilemma becomes the main topic of the film.

We note that “Altyn Minbar” is included in the list of cinema projects supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The Kazan International Film Festival is held with the support of the Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov and the Ministry of Culture of Russia, as well as in partnership with the strategic vision group “Russia – Islamic World”.

A vivid accent of the non-competition program of the XVIII Kazan International Muslim Film Festival will be section “The Turkic world”. Traditionally, the program will combine outstanding examples of cinematography of the Turkic-speaking nations.

According to the film expert, member of the selection committee of the festival Svetlana Slapke, the uniqueness of this program is that famous masters – representatives of the largest cinematographic countries like Turkey, Kazakhstan will meet on its territory with young but gaining strength cinematographers from the Turkic-speaking regions like Yakutia or Tatarstan.

“They are united by common roots, religion and language similarity. That is why it is easier for them not only in terms of language comprehension, but to understand deeper the aesthetics and stylistics of artistic expression of the cinema language, based on national traditions and the common Turkic national epic”, Svetlana Slapke assures.

She pointed out that the range of themes can be extend – from literary epic to the problems of current interest. This year’s feature is that there is no film on historic topic. Even Yakut cinema, which has been successful in the historical and epic genre is represented by the film “Dzulur mas wrestling” about sport”, notes Slapke.

Besides, two Tatarstan films showing diversity and range of interests of Tatarstan cinematographers are included in the program. “Farid Bikchantaev. In search of freedom” – is about the main director of the most important Tatar theatre, an intellectual based on national roots. “The biggest Tatar village in the world” shows the love and devotedness of ethnic Tatars to their language, culture and national traditions outside their historical motherland.

“Fire” film from Kazakhstan gained awards at large festivals represents an example of art-house film with the potential of wide release. “The Road to Eden” from Kyrgyzstan – is a beautifully shot film with a calm rhythm about the meaning of life, reflections and hesitations of an adult person, making conclusions.

Kazan film market is one of the key events of the business platform of the XVIII Kazan International Muslim Film Festival. Regional film market will take place in Kazan State Institute of Culture on September 8, 2022. The presentation of film studios, distributional companies, online cinemas, TV channels and films by independent producers and directors will take place.

This is the 2nd Film market in Kazan. We remind you that last year 32 companies from the regions of the Russian Federation participated in the debut event. This year the Film market will expand – the representatives of CIS, Iran, Turkey and Egypt film studios and distribution companies are invited.

Taking place within Business platform of KIMFF, Kazan film market is a territory of unity of the specialists in the field of cinema, education, film industry, producers, and representatives of film festivals – partners of KIMFF, film forums, international film organizations, experts and opinion leaders. The business platform provides conditions for projects implementation in the field of cinema.
