Dr. Barrister Olumuyiwa Adu “Cubana” – A Mixture of Leadership with Kindness and Competence

By Michael Adeboboye | Nigeria

Ondo Central Senatorial Race 2027

At a time when public trust in leadership is at an all-time low, Barrister Olumuyiwa Adu “Cubana” is offering Ondo Central something different: a senatorial bid his supporters call “a divine agenda projected by God-the-Father and lifted by the people themselves.” He is not, they insist, being pushed by godfathers or political deals. Instead, he brings a rare mix — the legal acumen of a courtroom advocate, the professional expertise of a trained administrator, and the street-level empathy of a philanthropist who has walked the towns he now seeks to represent.

If the 2027 Ondo Central Senate race has a campaign built on biography, it belongs to Dr. Barr. Olumuyiwa Adu, widely known as “Cubana.” His team frames the ambition in unambiguous terms: “Dr. Adu’s ambition is a divine agenda projected by GOD-THE FATHER and it’s being lifted by the people themselves. Dr. Adu is not being pushed by GODFATHERS or POLITICAL DEALS.”

That language matters in a political climate where patronage networks often decide tickets before primaries. Adu’s pitch is the opposite of backroom brokerage. “Undoubtedly, public trust in leadership is at an all-time low,” his profile notes. “Adu is bringing a refreshing alternative — a blend of professional expertise, legal acumen, and street-level empathy.

THE LAWYER-AS-CHANGEMAKER PITCH

Supporters argue his CV fills a gap they see in the Red Chamber – As a lawyer and advocate, he understands the machinery of governance. As a philanthropist, he understands the pulse of the people. This unique combination makes him a perfect fit for the Senate to be not just a lawmaker, but a change-maker.”

It is a two-pronged case: competence to draft and interrogate legislation, and compassion to ensure bills reach the grassroots. “Dr. Adu is not just entering politics; he is extending his services, the campaign says.

THE GROUND GAME: SIX LGAs AND COUNTING

The claim is not abstract. Adu’s team says he has “identified positively with the good people of Ondo East, Ondo West, Akure North, Akure South, Idanre and Ifedore local government areas.” That covers the entire Ondo Central senatorial district — a sweep that suggests retail politics, not radio politics.

In those LGAs, his name is tied to years of philanthropy before politics. Medical outreaches, scholarship support, legal aid for indigent clients, and youth empowerment drives are regularly cited by constituents as his introduction. The “Cubana” moniker, initially a social tag, has been rebranded to mean “community backbone” in campaign circles.

THE NO-GODFATHER NARRATIVE

Ondo politics has its kingmakers. Adu’s contrast is deliberate: not being pushed by GODFATHERS or POLITICAL DEALS. The strategy is to turn a weakness — no established machine — into a strength: direct accountability to voters. It resonates in a cycle where delegates and citizens alike say they are tired of “selection, not election.”

THE SENATE HE SEES

If elected, Adu’s agenda is expected to mirror his dual identity. Legal reform, judicial access for the poor, and oversight of MDAs would tap his bar experience. Constituency projects targeting education, primary healthcare, and agrarian support across Idanre’s cocoa belt, Akure’s urban wards, and Ondo’s farmlands would tap his philanthropy record.

The through-line is “leadership with kindness and competence.” In a Senate often criticized as distant, Adu is betting Ondo Central wants a senator who files motions and still picks calls.

Dr. Barr. Olumuyiwa Adu “Cubana” is not running as a political product. He is running as a “divine agenda… lifted by the people.” Whether that’s enough to beat established structures in 2027 will be tested at the polls. For now, across Ondo East to Ifedore, the name on the lips of traders, students, and farmers is the same: the lawyer who came with help before he came with a poster.

Nigerian Literary Genius Eyes Airbus Fly Your Ideas Grand Prize

CAJ International Magazine Bureau Editor for West Africa, Dela Ahiawor speaks with the Genius before he walks the path towards the ultimate prize.

By Dela Ahiawor

It’s hard to grasp how a master wordsmith is also able to innovate future-proof solutions in the realm of aerospace engineering.

Now, that’s a feat for a genius and one name that springs to mind is Clinton Ikechukwu, a young Nigerian literary genius, engineer and Erasmus Mundus Master’s student.

Tipped as the next Chinua Achebe (renowned Nigerian novelist) by followers captivated by his storytelling prowess on social media (Facebook); Clinton is also showcasing a trajectory towards excellence in the aerospace industry.

Representing Team Aeromorph: Clinton Ikechukwu together with Oghosa Abu, young lady from (Nigeria) and Muhammad Junaid Ali from (Pakistan), all currently enrolled at the Technical University of Chemnitz (TUC) in Germany have qualified for the finals of the Airbus Fly Your Ideas 2025 Competition.

In all, three teams: Team Aeromorph (Germany), Team SkyOptima (Singapore) and Team Atlas Trio USM (Malaysia) are headed to Paris, France for the finals slated for June 20, 2025 coinciding with Paris Airshow 2025. Airbus is covering all travel expenses. From the three teams, just one will be awarded the coveted prize – a fast-track interview for the Airbus Global Graduate Programme (AGGP) 2026.

Fly Your Ideas 2025 Competition is sponsored by Airbus- the largest aerospace company in Europe. The competition encourages students across the globe to innovate for the future of aerospace by addressing global challenges to create a safer, cleaner and a more interconnected world.

In an interview with Clinton Ikechukwu, leader of Team Aeromorph before he walks the path towards the ultimate prize, he effused: “The Airbus competition and journey have been nothing short of a revelation. I mean, I was struck by lots of fascinating ideas and thought processes. I think something that worked for us was the quality of our idea and how we were able to pitch persuasively. Our idea hinged on Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence, to us, is like the first light at dawn, a thing full of promise.”

Concerning the motivation behind the decision to put their inventive solutions into practice…..Clinton provided some perspective: “Coming from a multidisciplinary background, we were able to shape a detailed solution. In aviation, where so many lives depend on a thousand small decisions, we sensed the gaps where care and precision falter. And so, as engineers and mathematicians driven by the simple desire to leave the world better than we found it, we gathered as Team Aeromorph. The idea is to turn that promise of AI into the reassurance every pilot, every family, deserves.”

He went on saying: “For the finals in Paris, I have missed that city, and it will feel like a homecoming. As a team, we share a close-knit relationship. We are excited, and we want to enjoy the show and express ourselves freely at the Paris International Airshow.” No wonder, “Paris stays with you,” as the saying goes.

Ultimately, taking pride in the partnership with Oghosa (also from Nigeria), Clinton couldn’t help expressing strong national pride: “As Nigerians, we carry in our veins, super dreams. We are dreamers, pursuers, and walkers on water. We look forward to Paris and envisage a good time with other finalists.” And the genius couldn’t have said it better. The spirit of ingenuity is abundant in Africa….dream on rising stars of Africa!

Team Aeromorph of the Technical University of Chemnitz (TUC) in Germany made it to the finals in France from over 300 university teams across the globe. On April 30, 2025 Team Aeromorph’s AI‐powered emergency-landing assistant, EVA_LAND, earned the team a place in the finals. During the semi-finals on May 15, 2025 Team Aeromorph presented live in a digital event. Next, Team Aeromorph will represent (TUC) in Paris, France where they will compete against: Team SkyOptima (Singapore) and Team Atlas Trio USM (Malaysia).

The Airbus Fly Your Ideas 2025 Competition is structured in three distinct phases designed to test the skill and knowledge of participants:

Phase 1: Submission of a 30-second video pitch and Power Point proposal. A total of 366 teams applied, representing 49 countries and 229 universities.

Phase 2: Airbus experts reviewed all entries and selected the top six teams to present live to a judging panel.

Phase 3: Final competition to be held on June 20, 2025 at the Paris Airshow 2025 (Le Bourget).

MEET TEAM AEROMORPH

Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) invites the authors to submit their papers for a proposed book ‘Medicine and Literature Without Borders: Health, Humanities and Social Justice in the writings of Dr. Wale Okediran’.

Abuja

Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has invited the authors to submit their papers for a proposed book ‘Medicine and Literature Without Borders: Health, Humanities and Social Justice in the writings of Dr. Wale Okediran’.

The book is aimed to celebrate the writer, medical practitioner and literary administrator Dr. Wale Okediran, who is one of the most acclaimed physician-writers in Nigeria, whose career bestrides the domains of medicine, literature and politics.

Dr. Okediran’s life, as demonstrated in his writings, is a vibrant intersection of the multifarious and disparate experiences that define human existence. Trained and practiced as a physician, Okediran eventually developed a lifelong commitment to creative writing and political practice.

His engagements as a politician underscore his humanistic principles, possibly shaped by his twin career of medicine and literature.

In 2001, Professor Emmanuel Babatunde Omobowale, the first Professor of Literature and Medicine in Nigeria, defended his PhD thesis on the creative works of Nigerian physician-writers in the Department of English, University of Ibadan, which featured the work of Wale Okediran.

Like the Russian physician-writer, Anton Chekhov, who declares that “medicine is my lawful, wedded wife and literature is my mistress”, Okediran has remarkably established the symbiotic relationship between medicine and literature both in his writings and social activities. Besides the orthodox literary productions, he has also ventured into similar domains of writings like newspaper column, biographical narratives and travel writing.

The utilitarian and didactic import of his writings manifest in his ability to imagine a better social order by making suggestion for human and societal improvement.

Beyond the realm of conventional political practice, Dr. Okediran has brought his managerial skill to bear in arts administration.

Over the years, Okediran has remained an exemplary literary administrator with his decades of experience as State Chairman, Treasurer, General Secretary and President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). He was Chairman of the Nigeria Book Fair Trust (NIBFT) and current Secretary-General of the Pan-African Writers’ Association (PAWA), with headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

He is the founder and promoter of the Ebedi International Writers Residency in Iseyin, Oyo State. Dr. Okediran has inspired national and international networking and collaborations in literary engagements.

Dr. Wale Okediran, in less than a year to mark the milestone age of ‘three scores plus ten,’ has lived a life entirely devoted to promoting literature, national and international cooperation in the areas of literary/cultural humanities.

Dr. Wale Okediran has written and published a good number of novels, short stories collections, children’s literature, biographies and travelogues, some of which have won acclaimed literary prizes, ranging from the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) prizes to the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature.

His popularly acclaimed political thriller, Tenants of the House, a fictional recreation of his experience as an elected member of the Nigerian parliament between 2003 and 2007, was later produced by him into a film of the same title directed by the famous film auteur, Kunle Afolayan and made available on NETFLIX.

Dr. Wale Okediran is also a public intellectual, and has contributed significantly to conferences, seminars, colloquiums and workshops on different topical issues, especially on the intersection between medicine and literature, also broadly known as the medical humanities, as well as the praxis of literature in conversation with politics.

“It is, therefore, imperative that a man of such creative profundity and productivity, who has contributed to so many divergent but intersecting areas of life, should be examined and re-examined to foreground his place in knowledge productions in his chosen fields of practices,” a press release said.

This call for chapters seeks to explore Dr. Wale Okediran’s rich multidisciplinary contributions to literature, medicine, cultural studies and political discourse.

A very significant thrust of this book is how his creative imaginations, newspaper articles, biographical, travel writings have, over the years, contributed to knowledge productions in the field of literature and medicine in Nigeria and Africa.

Therefore, contributions that will be featured into the proposed book are to revolve round (but not limited to) the following sub-themes:

Social Vision and Wale Okediran’s Work; Diseases, Medicalisation and Wale Okediran’s Writings; Medical Ethics, the Therapeutic Relationship and Wale Okediran’s Writings; The Medical Humanities, Bibliotherapy, Scriptotherapy and Wale Okediran’s Writings; Health, Medical Consciousness and Wale Okediran’s Medical Columns; Politics and Social Justice in Wole Okediran’s Writings; The Art of Wale Okediran’s Short Stories; Children in Wale Okediran’s Creative Oeuvres; The Travelogues of Wale Okediran; Travel Writing as Literature; The Writer as a Biographer; Wale Okediran’s Popular Literature and the Reading Culture; The Writer in Politics: The Example of Wale Okediran; The Writer as a Literary Administrator: The Praxis of Wale Okediran; The Nexus between Literature and Film and Wale Okediran’s Place and Writers’ Residencies and the Empowerment of Literature.

Insightful, well–researched and positioned chapters on the many faces of Wale Okediran’s arts and practices will result in the publication of a book to mark his 70th Birth Anniversary in April, 2025.

The proposed book, Medicine and Literature Without Borders: Health, Humanities and Social Justice in the Writings of Wale Okediran, will explore the multidisciplinary outlook of Okediran’s literary oeuvres. Interested contributors are to adhere to the MLA 9th edition style sheet. All essays must be in MS word, Times New Roman, 12 fonts with 1.5 line-spacing (except indented quotations that should be in single line-spacing). The volume of an essay ranges from 5,000 to 7,000 words.

The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2024. Dedicated and focused personal tribute essays on any of the identified multi-dimensions of the man, Wale Okediran, will also be welcomed. All Submissions should be made to the editors through the following email address: waleokediran70@gmail.com The book editors will be Denja Abdullahi, fANA, NPOM Former President, Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Former Director, National Council for Arts & Culture, Abuja, Center for Creative Writing , University of Abuja, and Stephen Kekeghe, PhD. Senior Lecturer, Department of English & Literary Studies, Delta State University, Abraka. (PR)

The CAJ International Magazine Welcomes World Writers

Abuja Correspondent

“The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) will be hosting the writers of the world “World Organization of Writers” in the Abuja city of Nigeria, from April 4 to 6. Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) in the spirit of camaraderie wishes the global writers a successful event and extending a warm welcome in advance.”

This was the new editorial by Michael Adeboboye, Editor-in-Chief of the CAJ International Magazine, March 2024: “We are in the International Media Cooperation Protocol (IMCP), with WOW, hence the decision to dedicate this March Edition for the literary icons works – OUR FRIENDS! Indeed, this edition focuses more on some literary works: book reviews, and many other stories across Africa. Apparently, our friends will have some African stories to accompanying them back home to their respective continents. Of course great book reviews are not in short supply in this edition, and all are no doubt irresistible brides well dressed for the glimpse of finest grooms. This sounds more of robust conviction of great, fascinating and stupendous disposition of literary works. “

At the WOW first Congress, the book of Alexandra Ochirova will be introduced to the world in the capital city of the notable black nation of a notable continent. That is hypnotic enough to our cover “Alexandra Ochirova’s Russian Cosmism Comes to Abuja” The book was reviewed by Ashraf Aboul-Yazid Dali, founding member CAJ, President, Asia Journalists Association (AJA), Editor in Chief, The Silk Road Literature, Editor in Chief, The AsiaN and Deputy Editor in Chief, CAJ International Magazine.

According to Dali, Russian Cosmism by Alexandra Ochirova is a unique literary work that combines profound philosophy with sublime poetry. “This book contains poems reflecting the author’s journey from her early works to the present, demonstrating the fullness and diversity of Alexandra Ochirova’s creativity.

Alexandra Vasilievana Ochirova is a Poet, Doctor of Philosophy, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and Co-Chair of the General Council of the Assembly of Peoples of Eurasia, she holds a prominent place in contemporary culture and philosophy. Her multifaceted contribution to literature, science, and society is expressed through two key authorial aspects: Preservation of Humanity and Civilization of Meaning.

Alexandra Ochirova is a well-known political and public figure, recipient of state, public, and literary awards. She is the author of 15 poetry books, translated into the languages of the peoples of Russia and the world. Her lyrical legacy has inspired the creation of over a hundred musical compositions” writes Dali.

The role of public diplomacy in the development of Azerbaijani-Russian relations has been observed by poet and translator Eldar Akhadov, who has both identities.

On the other hand, four travels have been made to Zanzibar, Morocco, Cameroon and Tunisia. In the first topic, Egyptian writer and TV director Fatema al Zahraa Hassan highlights Dr. Badriya Al Shehhi’s work on Omani ruling of the African coastal sultanate of Zanzibar: “I found in the novel (Crossing Embers) a model of women’s quest for liberation and the rejection of outdated restrictions and the male view of life. Her revolution against injustice was parallel to the revolution of the African peoples occupied by the Islamized Muslim Arabs who were oppressing them and trading in slaves. There is no freedom without a price. No matter how great it is and how far-fetched it seems. The novel has been recently translated into English.”

The author Al Shehhi is the first Omani woman to write the novel in its artistic and literal sense. Indeed, we can say that the novel (Crossing Embers) is the first Omani work of fiction in the professional literary sense.

The second visit, to Morocco, is a chapter of Dr. Wale Okediran’s new book (Travels of a Troubadour): “Never in my life have I observed anything more bizarre than the first sight of Tangier. It is a tale out of the Arabian Nights… A prodigious mix of races and costumes. This whole world moves about with an activity that seems feverish. Eugène Delacroix, in a letter to Alexis de Tocqueville It’s midday in Tangier, Morocco. I am standing at the Tanja Marina Bay, Morocco’s first urban marina gazing into the blue waters of the Mediterranean as its freezing breeze carry to me, historic smells and sounds of this ancient and historical land. And despite the slanting midday sun, the cold weather persists. Far in the distance, lies Spain, separated from Tangier by a mere 20 miles of the Strait of Gibraltar. On a clear day, am told, one can see the whitewashed Spanish town of Tarifa, just 45 minutes away by ferry. In addition, the north Moroccan coast is less than 10 miles from some Spanish holiday beaches. It is Spain’s proximity to Tangier that has made the country a popular target of many African migrants, Nigerians inclusive, eager to escape to Europe.”

Nigeria’s Economic Tightrope: ‘Dollarization’, Inflation and the Social Balancing, by Oseni Yusuf Salami, is a deep analysis of economy. While it’s about Nigeria, it seems that it is applicable to many African countries, as well.

Populous nation, walks a tightrope when it comes to economic policy. Two key issues, dollarization and inflation, intertwine in a complex dance that impacts not just financial markets but also the daily lives of millions. Understanding this interplay is crucial to analyzing the country’s present and predicting its future. Unofficial Dollarization: A Refuge or a Risk? Nigeria officially operates on the naira, but a phenomenon known as “unofficial dollarization” is prevalent. This refers to the widespread use of US dollars in everyday transactions, from rent payments to luxury goods purchases. Estimates suggest over 20% of deposits in Nigerian banks are in dollars, highlighting the significant presence of this parallel currency system.

The reasons for dollarization are diverse. Some view it as a hedge against inflation, which has historically been high in Nigeria (currently hovering around 13%). Others seek dollar stability for international transactions or simply perceive it as a more valuable store of wealth.

However, dollarization is not without its drawbacks. It reduces the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) control over monetary policy, making it harder to manage inflation and interest rates. Additionally, it can create a two-tiered economy, benefiting those with access to dollars while leaving others vulnerable to naira fluctuations.

Inflation has been a persistent challenge for Nigeria, often exceeding the CBN’s target range. This erodes purchasing power, disproportionately impacting low-income earners who spend a larger share of their income on essentials. The current global inflationary pressures exacerbate the situation, pushing up food and energy prices further. The government has implemented various policies to curb inflation, including raising interest rates and restricting money supply.

While these measures might achieve some stability, they can also dampen economic growth, creating a delicate balancing act. The interplay between dollarization and inflation has real-life consequences for Nigerians. High inflation reduces the value of wages and savings, making it difficult to afford basic necessities. This can lead to increased poverty, social unrest, and a decline in living standards.

Dollarization, while offering some stability for select groups, can exacerbate inequality. Those without access to dollars are exposed to the full brunt of naira fluctuations and inflation, further widening the socioeconomic gap. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach. Taming inflation remains crucial, and achieving this necessitates fiscal discipline, structural reforms to boost productivity, and targeted social safety nets to protect vulnerable populations. Combating unofficial dollarization requires building confidence in the naira through sustained economic stability and addressing the factors driving people towards foreign currencies. This could involve diversifying the economy, promoting financial inclusion, and strengthening the CBN’s monetary policy tools.

Under the auspices of World Poetry Movement, 246 poets, writers and artists sign a call against the threat of military intervention in Niger and the wars in Africa

From WPM Correspondent

Since the events of July 26, 2023, the people of Niger and the neighboring African peoples have been living under the threat of military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Niger is a part, under the instigation of certain Western powers, in particular France and its allies in the region. The Sahel region is already suffering the horrors of terrorism which is rife under the watchful eye of the hegemonies inflicted on the region. Traditional colonization has given way to exploitation and the systemic impoverishment and subjugation of peoples by financial and economic mechanisms on the one hand, military and security injunctions imposed within the framework of a “cooperation” struck by the seal of abject neocolonialism.

We, the poets, writers, artists, creators and actors of Niger, in the world of creation, position ourselves with our peoples against war and condemn the threat of military intervention declared by the powers present in the region

The rejection of this multiform hegemony is sanctioned by the threat of a war which has already borne its bitter fruits in Libya and in other countries. We, the poets, writers, artists, creators and actors of Niger, in the world of creation; We position ourselves with our peoples against war and condemn the threat of military intervention declared by the powers present in the region; We call on the poets, writers, artists, creators and actors of the world to react to this threat and to undertake measures that their situation would allow them in favor of the struggle of our peoples against hegemonies and the threat of war; We call on human conscience to take a stand in favor of the rights of our peoples to live in freedom and peace in our countries.
