The VIP culture in Pakistan really affects common people like us. Every time a VIP or political leader goes somewhere, the roads are blocked for hours. People get stuck in traffic and reach work or home very late. It’s not fair that the public has to suffer like this.

Sometimes it even becomes a matter of life and death. I still remember the sad case of baby Bisma in 2015, who died because her father couldn’t enter Civil Hospital due to VIP security. Just think about how painful that was for her parents. How can people respect such a system when it takes away innocent lives?

Even in daily life, many people face this. A normal worker who spends the whole day at the office wants to go home and rest, but he gets stuck in traffic for hours because some VIP has to pass. It makes people frustrated and angry. I have seen it myself and saw how people get frustrated. Even students get for classes

Respect should come from good work and care for the people, not from sirens, convoys, and roadblocks. I hope our government understands this and ends these unnecessary protocols soon. The time and comfort of normal people should matter too.

Rameen Gul | Rawalpindi

Cybercrimes are a growing concern that affects individuals, organizations, and nations worldwide. These crimes involve using computers, networks, or the internet to commit illegal activities, such as stealing sensitive information, disrupting operations, or causing financial harm.

There are several types of cybercrimes, including hacking, phishing, identity theft, malware, cyberstalking, and financial fraud. Hacking involves gaining unauthorized access to computer systems or networks, often to steal sensitive information or disrupt operations. Phishing involves using fake emails, messages, or websites to trick victims into revealing sensitive information. Identity theft involves stealing personal information to commit fraud or other crimes. Malware involves spreading malicious software to damage or disrupt computer systems. Cyberstalking involves using the internet or other electronic means to harass, intimidate, or threaten someone. Financial fraud involves using the internet to commit financial crimes, such as online banking theft or credit card fraud.

Cybercrimes are often committed using sophisticated tactics, including social engineering, exploiting vulnerabilities, and using malware. Social engineering involves manipulating individuals into revealing sensitive information or performing certain actions. Exploiting vulnerabilities involves taking advantage of weaknesses in software or hardware to gain unauthorized access. Malware involves using malicious software to infect computer systems or steal sensitive information.

To reduce the risk of cybercrimes, individuals and organizations can take several steps. Using strong and unique passwords for all online accounts is essential, and changing them regularly can help prevent unauthorized access. Enabling two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to online accounts, making it harder for hackers to gain access. Keeping software up-to-date ensures you have the latest security patches, which can help protect against known vulnerabilities. Being cautious with emails and links can help prevent phishing attacks, and monitoring online accounts and credit reports can help detect suspicious activity. Using antivirus software and regularly updating it can protect against malware, and backing up important data can prevent losses in case of a cyber-attack. Organizations can take additional steps to reduce the risk of cybercrimes. Implementing security policies and procedures can help protect sensitive information, and training employees on cyber security best practices can help prevent mistakes that can lead to cyber-attacks. Conducting regular security audits can help identify vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with security policies, and using encryption can protect sensitive information, both in transit and at rest.

In conclusion, cybercrimes are a growing concern that requires immediate attention and action. By understanding the types of cybercrimes and taking proactive steps to reduce the risk, individuals and organizations can protect themselves from these threats

We stand at the edge of an educational emergency that has become a source of collective shame for a nation that aspires to progress

By Muneeba | Rawalpindi

I am deeply concerned on the worsening education crisis that our country continues to face. It, in fact, the devastating situation. This crisis is not new. For decades, various governments have presented plans, reforms, and promises, yet the outcomes have been minimal and the progress painfully slow. The state of education in Pakistan is not merely a matter of concern; it is a matter of national urgency. We stand at the edge of an educational emergency that has become a source of collective shame for a nation that aspires to progress.

Pakistan continues to rank among the countries with the highest illiteracy rates in the world. The situation is even more heartbreaking when we consider young girls, millions of whom are still denied the right to basic primary education. Their dreams are cut short by barriers rooted in poverty, early marriages, rigid gender roles, and harmful cultural norms that continue to place limitations on them before they even have a chance to discover their potential.

In rural and underdeveloped regions, the contrast between what education should be and what it actually is remains stark and painful. Many so-called schools lack the most fundamental facilities: boundary walls for safety, toilets for hygiene, clean drinking water, or even simple classroom furniture. Some “schools” exist only on official documents, while others stand as abandoned structures, forgotten by the very system meant to serve the children. The presence of absentee, “ghost” teachers further deepens the crisis, depriving countless children of the basic right to learn and grow.

Read: State of Education in Pakistan

Even where schools do function, the quality of education itself suffers immensely. Students often pass exams through rote memorization, repeating lines from textbooks without understanding their meaning. Instead of nurturing curiosity or creativity, the system encourages mechanical repetition. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills essential abilities for any nation’s future are largely ignored.

Our education system is failing the children who will one day shape the future of this country. If we do not address this crisis with sincerity and urgency, we risk condemning generations to the same cycle of poverty, inequality, and limited opportunity. The time for mere discussion has passed; it is time to come into action, reform, with collective responsibility that must now lead the way.

Pakistan Steel Mills—a once-thriving industrial giant now left vulnerable to brazen criminal activity

Since the dismissal of 5,000 employees in 2020 and another 1,300 earlier this year, the mill has become a ghost of its former self, making it an easy target for criminals

I write with deep concern about the alarming thefts plaguing Pakistan Steel Mills—a once-thriving industrial giant now left vulnerable to brazen criminal activity. For years, thieves have stripped the mill of iron, copper, and other valuable materials worth billions, yet no lasting solution has been put in place.

Recently, however, there was a glimmer of hope. Thanks to the courageous efforts of GM Security Dawood Kayani and his Anti-Theft Security Squad—including Kashif Ghafoor (In-charge), Muhammad Nawaz, Imtiaz Abbasi, Muhammad Sabir, and others—a major theft was thwarted. In a tense two-hour gunfight, the security team stood their ground, forcing the thieves to flee and abandoning stolen goods worth crores, along with a car and four motorcycles.

Read: Pakistan, Russian experts to discuss revival of Steel Mill

This bravery deserves recognition. Steel mill’s employees have praised the squad’s dedication, and Mr. Kayani himself highlighted the challenges they face—vast, unprotected premises and a severe shortage of security personnel. Despite these hurdles, his team works tirelessly to safeguard what remains of this national asset.

Read: The Saga of Pakistan Steel Mills

Yet, the bigger picture remains grim. Since the dismissal of 5,000 employees in 2020 and another 1,300 earlier this year, the mill has become a ghost of its former self, making it an easy target for criminals.

How much longer can we allow this to continue? Our national wealth is being looted in broad daylight, and without urgent intervention, these losses will only deepen. I implore the government and concerned authorities to act decisively—before it’s too late.

Sincerely,

Addressing the traffic incident crisis in Karachi requires a multifaceted approach that combines infrastructure improvements, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and public education

Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan, faces a critical traffic incident crisis that demands urgent attention. The rapid urbanization, increased vehicle ownership, and inadequate infrastructure have contributed to a troubling rise in road accidents. Key points about the situation include:

According to recent reports, Karachi sees thousands of traffic accidents annually, with a significant number resulting in fatalities or severe injuries.

Data indicates a marked increase in incidents over the past few years, with motorcyclists and pedestrians being disproportionately affected.

Causes

Overcrowding: The city’s road networks are often overwhelmed by a high volume of vehicles, exacerbating congestion and increasing the likelihood of accidents.

Poor Infrastructure: Many roads are poorly maintained, lacking proper signage, lighting, and traffic management systems.

Reckless Driving: Traffic violations, such as speeding, running red lights, and driving under the influence, are prevalent issues.

Lack of Awareness: A significant portion of drivers and pedestrians lacks awareness of traffic laws and safety protocols, leading to irresponsible behavior on the roads.

Read: Teenage girl killed in another Karachi road accident

Consequences

The human cost of traffic incidents is devastating, with families losing loved ones and many suffering from life-altering injuries.

Economic repercussions include increased healthcare costs for the injured, loss of productivity, and damage to property.

Traffic congestion due to accidents further leads to delays and inefficiencies, impacting daily life and business operations.

Recent Accidents

In the three holidays of Eid’ul-Fitr, up to seven people lost their lives, and 175 others got injured in the accidents occurred due to rough driving and poor infrastructure in Karachi. One of the heartbreaking aspects of these accidents is that many families lose their only earning hand.

These tragic incidents include death of a young motorcyclist named Hasnain of Liaquatabad, and death of a girl ad injuries to her mother in Malir Moina-Abad and Korangi.

Recommendations

Enhanced Enforcement: Strengthening traffic law enforcement to deter reckless driving is crucial.

Infrastructure Development: Investment in better road infrastructure and facilities, including pedestrian walkways and dedicated lanes for motorcycles.

Public Awareness Campaigns: Initiating campaigns to educate the public about safe driving practices and pedestrian rights.

Emergency Response Improvement: Developing quicker emergency response protocols to reduce the response time for road accidents.

Read: Rampant Road Accidents in Pakistan Pose Special Challenge

Conclusion

Addressing the traffic incident crisis in Karachi requires a multifaceted approach that combines infrastructure improvements, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and public education. The collective efforts of government authorities, law enforcement, and civil society are essential to creating a safer environment for all road users.

Call to Action

For anyone concerned about the safety of Karachi’s roads, it’s crucial to advocate for change. Engaging with community initiatives, participating in safety programs, and raising awareness can contribute to mitigating this grave situation.

I hope the government will act rapidly on this issue and address traffic issues in Karachi.

The tragic case of a girl who died after experiencing sexual abuse had sparked outrage and called for justice in Punjab and beyond, but after frequently changed statement from college authorities, police and other circles, finally, a news appeared in media that the ‘Parents of the victim say that the girl had collapsed from the stairs, and nothing like rape had happened.’ Such kind of statement by the parents after several days is manifestation of how the helpless parents are silenced exerting the pressures.

File photo

Such incidents highlight the urgent need for systemic changes to address sexual violence, ensure accountability, and support victims. It is crucial for law enforcement and judicial systems to respond swiftly and effectively to such crimes, and for communities to work together to create safe environments for all individuals. Advocacy for stronger laws and better support services for victims is vital in preventing future incidents and ensuring justice is served. Public awareness and education are also key components in addressing the root causes of such violence.

This incident happened in Punjab Girls College (PGC) campus 11, where a security guard, reportedly a retired military personnel, sexually assaulted a girl with the help of a van driver. Firstly the van driver stopped the girl and said he wanted to talk to her about her fees. A teacher listened to her cry and went to help her. She was only a 17 year old student of 1st year. The college authorities tried from the very first day to protect their reputation, and all people working in PGC were trying to save themselves denying the facts, but it’s a real case.

File photo

The people are very disappointed by the government because the rich people can buy the government. Even the victim’s family members were missing for several days. What a country this is, where seeking justice is treated as a ‘big sin’?

Monsoon rains are most awaited rains in many regions of Asia being one of the major sources of water. as our crops mainly depend on it. Besides, it brings down the temperature that is why it is warmly welcomed. However, if we peep into past and even in recent years, monsoon have played havoc in Asian countries. The severe kind of hot season has invited wild rains and floods making it uncontrolled. Resultantly, it has done great damage to the infrastructure, houses, roads and railways etc.

Kotdiji-Cotton crop under the rainwater

Once the blessing, rains have turned curse for unprivileged class. The influential class manages the disaster but poor are the actual victims.

3 Christian Punjabi sisters recently won 12 gold medals (4 each) at the Asia Pacific women’s power lifting tournament in South Africa

Pakistan’s social media has raised questions about the double standards of rulers who paid Rs.300 million to Arshad Nadeem for winning a Gold Medal but neglected three Christian girls who won 12 Gold Medals recently.

Arshad Nadeem of Team Pakistan celebrates winning the gold medal with New Olympic Record after competing in the the Men’s Javelin Throw Final on day thirteen of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Stade de France on August 08, 2024 in Paris, France.

Arshad Nadeem, recently won the gold medal breaking the Olympic record with a 92.97m throw in the men’s javelin final at Paris 2024, and has been showered with cash awards worth over Rs.300 million by the Federal, Punjab and Sindh governments, however three Christian girls, also hailing from Punjab, who won 12 gold medals (4 each) at the Asia Pacific women’s power lifting tournament in South Africa, have been neglected, which shows the double standards of the rulers.

Paying so much money to Arshad Nadeem has been questioned by general public and the social media of Pakistan is full of criticism on such discrimination.

One Foqia Khan wrote on August 17, 2024 that “Paying so much money to Arshad Nadeem seems artificial. It is not as if they are giving him money from their own pockets. So far he has got at least 30 crores (300 Million), 15 crores from Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, 10 crores from Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz and 5 crores from Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah, and there might be some other grants as well.”

She further writes, “Monetizing the Olympic win is a bad idea. The Olympic win must be celebrated with medals and other forms of recognition but it should not be excessively monetized. This big amount of money could be better spent on the health and education of the poor. Wrong usage of the public money to act like kings and queens!”

Christian Girls Win 12 Gold Medals

Three Pakistani Christian sisters made history by winning 12 gold medals in a powerlifting championship in South Africa in July, garnering laurels for their community and nation, but they were utterly neglected by the rulers.

Weightlifters Sybil Sohail, Veronika Sohail and Twinkle Sohail competed in the 52 kg, 57 kg and 84 kg categories respectively, excelling in squat, bench press, deadlift, and overall weight. The siblings bagged four gold medals each, showcasing their prowess and elevating Pakistan’s stature in international weightlifting.

According to Twinkle Sohail, the sisters, whose journey to South Africa was made possible through the support of the Punjab Sports Board, had been preparing for the championship in South Africa for a year.

“This was an important event for us because powerlifters from 20-25 countries from three continents were participating in it,” she told Christian Daily International.

Read: Christian becomes first minority woman to be promoted to brigadier in Pakistan Army

Twinkle Sohail, 21, is studying BS Sports Sciences at the University of Lahore. In 2015, she became the first Pakistani female powerlifter to win four gold medals in the 47 kg category of Junior (Under-21) at the Asian Bench-Press Championship (ABP) held in Oman.

Sybil Sohail followed her sister’s footsteps and made headlines after winning gold for squat, bench press, deadlift, and total weight at the International Oceania Pacific Powerlifting Championship held in Singapore in 2017. She graduated with a degree in BS Sports Sciences and Physical Education from Punjab University and is currently pursuing a PhD.

Veronica Sohail, studying at St. Anthony’s College, Lahore won gold medal in the women’s Under-17, 47 kg category at the Asian Pacific Classic and Equipped Powerlifting & Bench Press Championships 2018, held in Dubai.

Last but not the least, their fourth sister Mariyum Sohail is a national champion in weightlifting and powerlifting. She won a bronze medal in ABP 2018.

The Sohail sisters also known as ‘Power Girls’ received international recognition for creating a unique record in 2018, at the ABP Championship held in Dubai.

The Asian Powerlifting Federation (APF) in a statement at that time said, “In the APF powerlifting history, we never had four sisters competing at any powerlifting event and all four winning medals.”

That incident happened in Sanghar district of Sindh and now an incident of same nature took place in Chinnot district of Punjab where a landlord killed female donkey by ripping open its stomach with a sickle as the punishment for scavenging in his Fields.

Where are we going? What has happened to us? Where is humanity? Why we have become so cruel? Why we don’t think that animals can also feel pain, suffering and stress just like humans. Once Pope Francis said, “The way we treat animals is a test of our humanity.”

We strongly need to start campaign with slogan “Save animals for the sake of humanity” and in this campaign, the government should also participate. There should be strict punishment for those who hurts animal. Wildlife department and officials concerned are requested to pay attention and save animals.
