Karachi, Sindh

Mr. Kushtrim Mehmeti, Artistic Director of National Theater of Kosovo, conducted the ‘Virtual Theater Workshop’ at Sindh Madressatul Islam University Karachi’s Youth Development Center on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

Sindh Madressatul Islam University’s Directorate of Students’ Affairs and Counselling had organized the virtual theater workshop in collaboration with the Pakistan Arts Council Karachi.

The foreign guest trainer is renowned for his expertise in performing art. The event was designed to engage students in creative exercises that emphasized teamwork, improvisation, and interaction, all through virtual simulations.

The virtual theater workshop was a dynamic experience that encouraged students to express themselves in a collaborative and creative environment. The mix of virtual simulations and imaginative activities made the event a fun learning experience, boosting participants’ confidence and communication skills.

Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, Vice Chancellor of SMIU thanked the guest Mr. Kushtrim Mehmeti and said that performing art is a reflection of life, hence its importance is accepted across the world. The Vice Chancellor said SMIU gives importance to multiple growth of its students from their academic activities to their co-curricular activities.

He said SMIU has its students’ societies including the Art Society, which is organizing different learning and training sessions for students. “We have to promote healthy culture in our higher education institutions through, literature, art, music and other such activities.”

The workshop kicked off with participants virtually forming a circle and mimicking various physical actions as directed by the trainer. This icebreaker encouraged creative movement and helped ease participants into the workshop. The speaker organized participants into groups based on their academic departments. Each group worked together on various theatre-related tasks, fostering a sense of community and enhancing collaboration among peers.

In pairs, students participated in an exercise where they conveyed emotions using only facial expressions. This helped participants to refine their non-verbal communication skills and encouraged empathy and emotional connection.

Participants were asked to virtually embody different animals, using their voices and body language to act out characteristics. This fun and imaginative activity encouraged participants to get out of their comfort zones and embrace creativity.

An activity where participants were instructed to imagine passing an invisible ball between one another, focusing on coordination and teamwork. This exercise tested how well participants could maintain their focus and simulate actions without physical objects.

To conclude, participants were challenged to perform a continuous action scene without pausing. This helped students develop improvisational skills and think quickly on their feet.

VC Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai gave away souvenirs to the guest and the Director Students’ Affairs Muhammad Naeem Ahmed distributed certificate among students. (PR)

About 16 percent people or more than 01 billion of the world population are special persons while the number of such persons in in Pakistan is 15 million.

“The society must treat special persons as the normal human beings and we have to provide them necessary facilities specially at buildings and public transport,’ Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, Vice Chancellor of SMIU said while delivering the presidential address at an interactive session held on the subject of “Children with Inclusive Needs” at Sindh Madressatul Islam University’s auditorium, organized by the Department of Media and Communication Studies.

Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai said for the development of the country we have to include our all marginalized communities such as women and special persons in each and every filed of the country. “The Sindh Madressatul Islam University has included facilities for special persons in the buildings that are being constructed in the Malir campus of SMIU,” he said.

Faisal Edhi, son of renowned philanthropist late Abdul Sattar Edhi, and chairman of the Edhi Foundation, in his address said those special persons who are doing small businesses are our real heroes, and they must be supported. He said these people are struggling and dreaming for their better life and also want to contribute in the society, thus we have to support them.

He further said there are 02 million children enrolled in primary schools in Karachi city and 2.6 million children of the city are out of schools. Hence, there is a need to provide education to all children of the country.

“A few years ago I had met with a Palestinian diplomat in Islamabad and had requested him to give us permission to initiate a work for children in Gaza, then he replied that such permission can give you Egypt, but he said, despite the war in Gaza imposed by Israel at that time, there was more than 98 percent literacy rate in Gaza and they were running three shifts of schools over there due to the shortage of school buildings,” Faisal Edhi said and added that there is no war like situation in our country, we must make efforts to educate our all children and if it is needed there should be three shifts of schools like Gaza.

Faisal Edhi said presently there are no “Nuns” in Karachi city, who mostly belonged to Christian and Hindu communities. This kind of situation is being faced by many children’s homes in Karachi like Darulsukun and others. Similarly, due to the engagement of European countries in the wars, their financial support to the welfare organizations in Pakistan has decreased. This situation has also created a crisis for the welfare organizations.

Faisal Edhi was of the view that we need a skilled Pakistan, where normal as well as special children should be taught different skills.

The special persons including Ms. Saba Ghizali, Gold Medalist, PhD Scholar and visiting faculty at SMIU, Syed Ali Hassan, Sub Editor of Monthly Qaumi Zaban, Anjuman-i-Taraqqi-i-Urdu, Ms. Preeti Varodra, receptionist at TDF Magnificence Centre, Ali Khan Tareen, Co-CEO and Founder of Khas Foodz also shared their success stories and suggested that the government should provide them facilities in working as well as public places.
Karachi, Sindh

The distinguished academicians of Pakistan, Russia, USA and UK have shown their concern on depleting natural resources like natural gas, and water owing to increased consumption and growing population.

Speaking at a session on “Integrating Sustainability into Higher Education: Challenges and Opportunities from the Perspective of Academicians” at Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) Karachi on March 7, they said the sustainability is much needed at all levels for development.

They suggested that each and every one should contribute to sustainability in the field individually and collectively. “Sustainability must be made a part of curriculum of higher education also,” they exhorted.

Dr. Keith Casey Barton, Professor at Indiana University, USA said that the sustainability is a long and slow process, but we should focus on the sustainability for our secure future.

She suggested that educational institutions should take responsibility to publish social impact reports and that should be made a part of the academia.

Dr. Solnyshkina Marina Ivanovna, Professor of Linguistics at the Kazan University of Russia narrated her success story and social and educational conditions during and post-Soviet Union period.

He said development has the cast to pay. “When we are developing our countries we are not considering how we can provide sustainability to our resources.”

Dr. Uqaili said we have much used our energy resources as a result even in Karachi, citizens are facing shortage of natural gas. “We are looking to reuse and recycle the waste materials, but Germany has now gone to the zero waste.”

Dr. Uqaili further said we believe that universities are agents of change, and these are producing human resources to the society, therefore, for sustainability we have to provide capacity building trainings to youth for sustainability.

Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro, ECO Science Foundation said people need to be educated about sustainability. They need to know what are the factors affecting our environment and what the skills and technologies are required to achieve the sustainability without going into SDGs and targets.

He said education as well as SDGs 4 and 5 emphasized that education should be across the board and for all. Therefore, there is a need to transform the society according to the way we think and the way we are groomed. “To achieve the targets we should go back to early child education, then building the tertiary education and then higher education.”

He suggested that in this respect we have to engage the HEC to bring school children, university students, faculty, industry, media and all the stake holders at one platform to play their major role.

Dr. Soomro said we are working in isolation, but everyone must be resilient at these issues and in this respect science education is most important.

On the contrary population is growing, and therefore demand for food has increased. He said because of change in consumption pattern and urbanization there is a huge pressure on natural resources. “Now we have to meet the requirements of the current population and current need of the country without compromising on our future need and without compromising on the interests of future generations.”

Dr. Marri said integration of the sustainability in higher education is also important. He suggested that now the task is to improve production and productivity. “Higher education also needs sustainability.”

“Around 03 percent of our illegible cohort gets in higher education and 90 percent is still out of higher education,” Dr. Marri said and added that we have to make education sustainable for all children.
