Workers and leaders of Awami Tehreek and Sindhyani Tehreek, including women and children, observed token hunger strike in Hyderabad

Hyderabad

Awami Tehreek, District Hyderabad, organized token hunger strike in front of the Hyderabad Press Club on Sunday to register protest against corporate farming, canals, dams, lawlessness, and the exploitation of Sindh’s resources.

Slogans were chanted against the looting of Sindh’s water and land grabbing. A number of women and children also participated in the protest.

The hunger strike was led by central leader of Sindhyani Tehreek Husna Rahujo, Subhani Dahri, Awami Tehreek leader Jam Tamachi, Noor Nabi Palijo, District President Sarmad Rajpar, Secretary Ashok Kumar, Aslam Parvez Umrani, Haji Khan Samoon, Abdul Hai Bhutto, Saleem Budh, Saima Arbab, Faiza Soomro, Ali Raza Jalbani, Irfan Lashari, Ahmed Ali Talpur and others. Comrade Iqbal of the Communist Party of Pakistan also participated.

Speaking on the occasion, the leaders said that international media reports claim that a deal has been struck to hand over Sindh’s oil and gas reserves to the U.S. “We ask the Bilawal-Shahbaz coalition government: why are decisions about Sindh’s resources being made in Islamabad and the U.S.? Who made this secret deal with America, and under what law?”

Sindh’s natural resources belong to the Sindhi nation. The reserves of oil and gas in Sindh are being secretly handed over to the United States. This secret deal with the U.S. regarding resources is a breach of the Constitution. Those who broke the Constitution must be prosecuted under Article 6.

The leaders further said that on one hand, lands in Sindh are being illegally occupied, the Indus River is being dried up, and on the other hand, a reign of bandits has been imposed in Sindh. Ransom notes are being sent out, and those who do not pay are being killed, with the bandits enjoying government protection. The attack on Dr. Kripal Das in Sukkur for ransom is strongly condemned.

They demanded that the bandits, extortionists, and their tribal feudal backers be arrested and severely punished. They added that all new dam and canal projects on the Indus River should be stopped immediately, Sindh must be given its due share of water, and lands allotted to corporate farming companies should be withdrawn and distributed among the local landless peasants. (PR)

Hyderabad / Kathmandu

A session of the recently held international conference in Kathmandu, Nepal, focused on pressing issues such as corporate farming, the destruction of the Indus Delta, threats to the existence of the Indus River, and the burden of debt imposed by global institutions that enslave poorer nations.

Advocate Kainat Dahri, central information Secretary of the Sindhyani Tehreek, participated in the conference, a Sindhyani Tehreek press release said here.

Slogans such as “No to canals!”, “Say No To Corporate Farming” and “Let the Indus River flow!” echoed throughout the event.

The conference adopted a resolution against corporate farming and canal construction, emphasizing the need to maintain the natural flow of the Indus River.

At the request of the Sindhyani Tehreek, participants held placards demanding an end to canals and corporate farming as a form of protest.

Addressing the conference, Advocate Kainat Dahri, stated that the Pakistani government has laid a web of dams and canals that has devastated and destroyed the Indus Delta.

She declared that six new canals are part of a genocidal conspiracy against seventy million Sindhis.

She added that while the Indus River is being slaughtered, corporate farming is being used to seize land from the Sindhi people, rendering them stateless in their own homeland—just like the Palestinians. (PR)

Rallies will be held from May 15 to June 15 across Sindh to mobilize public resistance against corporate farming and controversial canals.

Hyderabad, Sindh

The Central Committee of Sindhyani Tehreek decided on Sunday April 27, 2025 to organize month long rallies named as ‘Whistle March’ from May 15 to June 15 to mobilize public resistance against corporate farming and controversial canals.

Chaired by Senior Vice President Zarqa Halepoto, the meeting reviewed the ongoing protests across Sindh against corporate farming and new canal projects and made important decisions to escalate the movement.

The meeting decided that Sindhyani Tehreek’s women members will actively join the lawyers’ sit-in protest at Babarloi Bypass on a daily basis.

Addressing the meeting Leaders said that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government is conspiring to violently suppress Sindh’s peaceful democratic struggle. They condemned police brutality against peaceful protesters in Kashmore, Malir, and other towns, calling it the PPP’s worst fascist face.

The leaders highlighted that since the passage of the Board of Investment Amendment Act 2023, a black law, protests, rallies, hunger strikes, and seminars have intensified, turning all of Sindh into a hub of resistance.

They slammed the destruction of the Indus Delta, the world’s fifth-largest delta, due to water diversion, leading to the collapse of mangrove forests and extinction of aquatic species.

They warned that six new canals would result in the genocide of 70 million Sindhis by exacerbating water scarcity and displacing communities.

They demanded immediate cancellation of land allotments to Green Corporate Initiative Private Limited and Amendments to the IRSA Act (Indus River System Authority Act), which they claim prioritizes corporate interests over Sindh’s rights.

Sindhyani Tehreek hailed the Babarloi sit-in and urged all Sindhis—students, farmers, laborers, intellectuals, journalists, and citizens—to strengthen the peaceful democratic struggle and reject propaganda inciting violence.

The ST vowed to resist corporate exploitation and “anti-people” policies until Sindh’s resources and rights are safeguarded.

Husna Rahujo, Dr. Marvi Sindhu, Subhani Dahri, Bakhtawar Mallah, Saima Manghnhar, Shamsad Laghari, Maryam unar, Sorath Manghnhar, Sindhia Fazil, Kainat Dahri, Azmat Halipoto, Sajida Bhano, Salma Lashari, Begum Zaor, Shaheen Khaskheli, Zainat Mirjat and other prominent leaders participated the meeting.

Khairpur Nathan Shah, Sindh

A protest rally was organized by the Awami Tehreek and Sindhyani Tehreek in Khairpur Nathan Shah town of Dadu district on Friday against corporate farming, six new canals, amendments to the IRSA Act, and the government’s failure to set wheat and other crop procurement prices.

The rally commenced from the Community Center and culminated in a demonstration outside the local Press Club, with significant participation of women and children.

Demonstrators carried placards inscribed with their demands and slogans such as ‘end corporate farming projects’, ‘stop land grabbing’, ‘cancel anti-Sindh canals’, ‘Federal government must choose between canals and Pakistan’.

They demanded immediate cancellation of six new canals and to halt corporate farming projects; guarantee Sindh’s rightful water share under the 1945 Sindh-Punjab Water Accord; set fair wheat and other crop prices to protect farmers from exploitation; halt illegal occupation of lands under the guise of corporate farming and the Green Pakistan Initiative.

Addressing the rally Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahesar, Central General Secretary, Awami Tehreek said that the IRSA has done injustice to Sindh. Its three-tier water-sharing formula violates the constitution and national laws. Six new canals are being dug from the Indus River to supply water to corporate farming companies, depriving Sindh of its rightful share. These canals are a conspiracy to annihilate 70 million Sindhis.

Mahe Noor Mallah, Central Joint Secretary, Awami Tehreek said that the PPP must stop its hypocritical opposition to the canals. President Zardari approved these canals on July 8, 2024, under the Green Pakistan Initiative. If the PPP truly opposes them, it should break ties with the federal government. The PPP must oppose corporate farming and the so-called Green Pakistan Initiative, as these six new canals and illegal amendments to IRSA are designed to divert Indus River water to corporate farming companies. If the PPP continues its drama, the people of Sindh will treat the PPP like Ayub, Zia, Musharraf, and other dictators.

Bakhtawar Mallah Central Deputy General Secretary, Sindhyani Tehreek said that wheat and other crops’ lower price is economic murder of farmers. Corporate land grabbers are displacing indigenous communities, forcing coastal populations in Thatta, Badin and Sujawal to migrate due to artificial water scarcity. The Indus Delta’s ecosystem and Sindhi livelihoods face genocide through water diversion.

Advocate Najeeb ur Rehman Mahesar, Central Legal Advisor, Awami Tehreek said that Sindh’s lands are being snatched from farmers and handed to corporations. In Kachho (Dadu), thousands of acres have been seized. These lands belong to the Sindhi people, not any government.

Kashif Malah, Central Media Secretary, Awami Tehreek said that Water theft is destroying Sindh’s agriculture. We will resist these canals just as we defeated the Kalabagh Dam under Rasool Bux Palijo’s leadership. Our anti-corporate farming movement will continue until these projects are scrapped.

He added that the government refuses to purchase wheat from farmers to support corporate farming companies and wheat smugglers. In 2022, the government-backed profiteers (middlemen who hoard and sell food items at inflated prices) sold flour at Rs.5000 per 40 kg while they purchased wheat at the rate of Rs.2000 per 40Kg. Now, the government refuses to purchase wheat from farmers, and is being bought by middlemen, smugglers, and profiteers at Rs.2400 per 40kg. And after some time the profiteers will sell flour on inflated prices. He demanded fair wheat prices and urged the government to create a plan to control flour and other prices, as capitalists buy crops at lower rates and sell them at unaffordable rates to the public. Additionally, they smuggle wheat and other food items to Afghanistan and other countries. The government must prevent smuggling to protect farmers and consumers.

As a part of ongoing protest campaign against the construction of disputed canals in Punjab, a rally and sit-in were organized by the Awami Tehreek and Sindhyani Tehreek in Khipro town of district Sanghar on Monday March 24.

The rally started from Khipro Canal and marched to Shaheed Soreh Badshah Chowk. Participants, including women, children, farmers, lawyers, civil society representatives, and other citizens, carried placards and chanted slogans against corporate farming, six new canals, and amendments to the IRSA Act.

Demonstrators accused the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of “selling the Indus River” and prioritizing power over Sindh’s interests. They claimed President Zardari approved the six new canals and amendments to the IRSA Act, enabling the sale of Indus River water to foreign corporations.

Protesters said that the strategic Canal project has expanded from six to nine canals, threatening Sindh’s environment and resources.

Lal Jarwar, Central Information Secretary, Awami Tehreek alleged PPP is exploiting Sindh’s land and water resources to empower Bilawal Bhutto as Prime Minister. He stated 52,713 acres of Sindh’s land have already been allocated to foreign investors via military-linked companies, with plans to sell 130,000 more acres.

Leaders labeled the six new canals a “death warrant for Sindh” and part of a corporate farming agenda backed by PPP leaders Bilawal Bhutto and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

They said PPP’s planned protest on 25 March was condemned as a “conspiracy” to sabotage Sindh’s peaceful resistance and propaganda in the favor of corporate farming.

Umrah Samoon, President, Sindhyani Tehreek, declared that Sindh’s women will lead the struggle to protect the Indus River, land, and cultural heritage.

Leaders warned PPP to abandon its support for corporate farming or face the same fate as dictators Ayub Khan, Zia-ul-Haq, and Musharraf. They vowed to protect every inch of Sindh’s land, rivers and historical sites.

The rally concluded with a resolve to continue peaceful democratic resistance until all “anti-people, anti-country” projects are revoked.

Shamsad Laghari, Sattar Rind, Izhar Dawood Poto, Ataullah Unar, Musa Rajar, Haleem Mangrio, Dildar Laghari, Sadiq Kunbhar, Mian Ghulam Haider Rajar, Amar Sindhu Mari, Zainab Rajar, Ali Nawaz Dahri, Mir Hassan Mari, and Other spoke during the demonstration.

Mirpur Khas/ Naoukot

A 3-kilometer protest march was organized on Saturday March 15 by the Awami Tehreek and Sindhyani Tehreek from Gulanji Mori to Khwaja Chowk in Naou Kot town of Mirpurkhas district, opposing the construction of six new canals from the Indus River and corporate farming projects encroaching on millions of acres of Sindh’s land.

The march saw massive participation from women, children, and civil society, with strong condemnation of the controversial canals, corporate farming, the so-called Green Pakistan Initiative, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), and the IRSA Amendment Ordinance.

Addressing the March, Awami Tehreek’s Central President Advocate Vasand Thari, Central Information Secretary Lal Jarwar, Mukhtiar Khaskheli, Advocate Ayaz Kaloi, and Sindhyani Tehreek’s Azmat Kaloi denounced the six new canals as a “genocidal plan” threatening 70 million Sindhis. They accused Punjab’s rulers of exploiting Sindh’s water resources for over 150 years through dams and canals, while President Asif Zardari was criticized for “brokering Sindh’s resources” by approving the canals during the July 8, 2024, Green Pakistan Initiative meeting (which he chaired) and endorsing the IRSA Amendment.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was condemned for selling Sindh’s lands and water for power, Leaders labeled the Sindh Assembly’s resolution on the canal matter as “fraudulent”—comparable to the disputed digital census, noting that the PPP-led Sindh government initially opposed the digital census but later approved it, a repeat of its earlier hypocrisy. They accused the PPP of playing the same deceptive game” aimed at undermining Sindh’s rights.

They added that Instead of new canals, Punjab’s “illegal” waterways, including the Taunsa-Panjnad and Chashma-Jhelum (CJ) Link Canals, must be shut down to ensure Sindh receives its rightful water share. Leaders highlighted that IRSA illegally diverts water to these flood canals. Despite Sindh facing over 50% water shortages, as per IRSA’s own data. Protesters demanded legal action—including invoking Article 6 (pertaining to treason)—against IRSA members for issuing “fake water availability certificates” to Punjab’s Cholistan Canal while denying Sindh its due share under the 1991 Accord. “IRSA is conspiring against the federation by favoring Punjab’s elite,” speakers declared.

Leaders rejected corporate farming as a scheme to auction Sindh’s lands, asserting that “Sindh’s lands belong to its people, not governments or corporations.” They warned that the new canals would accelerate the “economic genocide” of Sindhis, exacerbating the region’s ecological collapse. Severe water shortage have already turned fertile lands barren, destroyed livelihoods, and forced mass migration. The PPP-led provincial and federal governments were slammed for prioritizing corporate interests over Sindh’s survival.

Sindh must be compensated for losses stemming from Punjab’s violations of the 1945 Sindh-Punjab Water Agreement and the 1991 Water Accord. Although the 1991 Accord was forcibly imposed by the federal government and remains unfavorable to Sindh, Punjab’s ruling class continues to breach even this skewed agreement.

The protesters vowed to defend the Indus River until their last breath. Sindhyani Tehreek’s women leaders pledged to bury these canal projects just as we defeated the Kalabagh Dam.

‘Let the Indus River Flow’. Protest Rallies Mark the International Day of Action for Rivers

Awami Tehreek and Sindhyani Tehreek organizes protest rallies at Indus River Bridges Jamshoro-Hyderabad, Dadu-Moro, Amri-Qazi Ahmed, Khairpur-Larkana and Thatta-Sujawal against disputed canals

Jamshoro/Hyderabad

On the occasion of the International Day of Action for Rivers, Awami Tehreek and Sindhyani Tehreek organized a protest rally from Karan Shoro village in Qasimabad to Al-Manzar, Jamshoro, where participants paid tribute to the Indus River.

The demonstration, attended by a large number of women and children, strongly condemned the construction of six new canals, amendments to the IRSA Act, and corporate farming projects. The protesters showered flowers into the river and pledged to continue their struggle for Sindh’s water rights.

The rally was led by Awami Tehreek’s Central President Advocate Vasand Thari, Central Leaders Advocate Izhar Dawoodpo, Advocate Raheel Bhutto, Sindhyani Tehreek’s Central President Umarah Samoon, Awami Tehreek Hyderabad President Sarmad Rajpar, Noor Nabi Palijo, Husna Rahujo, Advocate Kainat Dahri, Jam Tamachi, and others.

Addressing the gathering, the leaders stated that former President Ayub Khan committed a historical betrayal by selling three rivers—Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej—to India under an agreement with the Nehru government, leading to an environmental and economic disaster for the Sindh province. They added that for over 150 years, Punjab’s ruling elite has been exploiting Sindh’s water by constructing canals and dams, severely damaging the Indus Delta. Citing a World Bank report, they claimed that Pakistan suffers an annual economic loss of $200 billion due to the depletion of water resources.

The speakers highlighted the devastating impact of this water mismanagement, including the destruction of mangrove forests, rising sea intrusion, and the desertification of Sindh’s agricultural lands. Despite the 1991 Water Accord, they claimed that Sindh is facing more than a 50% water shortage, with authorities failing to ensure the province receives its due share.

Turning their criticism towards the Sindh government, the leaders accused the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of siding with the Punjab government and the federal administration at the cost of Sindh’s interests. They alleged that the six new canals are being constructed with PPP’s tacit approval and dismissed the recent Sindh Assembly resolution on the issue as a mere eyewash, lacking the genuine demands of the people. They likened this to the digital census controversy, where PPP initially opposed the process but later endorsed it through the Council of Common Interests (CCI), reducing Sindhis to a minority in their own province.

The protestors demanded the immediate cancellation of all six new canals, corporate farming initiatives, the Green Pakistan project, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), and the Board of Investment Amendment Act 2023. They rejected any government resolution that does not include these demands, calling it an attempt to undermine Sindh’s struggle for its water rights.

They also criticized the role of IRSA in approving the Cholistan Canal based on manipulated data, calling for legal action against those responsible. Furthermore, they accused President Asif Ali Zardari of amending the IRSA Act to facilitate corporate control over Sindh’s water resources and shift authority over the Indus River to security institutions. The speakers condemned PPP for what they described as a deceptive strategy to mislead the public while serving the interests of powerful stakeholders.

Calling for international intervention, the leaders demanded the formation of an independent commission comprising global water and environmental experts and intellectuals to investigate violations of Sindh’s water rights. They insisted that Sindh must receive its due share of water under the 1945 Sindh-Punjab Water Agreement.

Meanwhile, Awami Tehreek organized a motorcycle rally from Larkana, culminating in a demonstration at the Larkana-Khairpur Bridge. Protesters symbolically offered flowers to the Indus River, voicing strong opposition to the construction of six new canals, corporate farming projects, and amendments to the IRSA Act.

The demonstration was led by Awami Tehreek’s Central General Secretary Advocate Sajid Hussain Mehisar, Sindhi Hari Tehreek’s Central President Comrade Ghulam Mustafa Chandio, Awami Tehreek leaders Qadir Bhutto, Ali Hassan Wako, Mehmood Ruk Rahujo, and senior members of the Sindhi Students Tehreek. A large contingent of lawyers, writers, poets, artists, students, and laborers also participated, including Larkana Bar Association President Advocate Athar Abbas Solangi and Vice President Advocate Nooruddin Mehisar, along with hundreds of lawyers who joined the protest.

Speaking at the rally, the leaders emphasized that the struggle for river conservation is a global movement, and the people of Sindh are actively fighting to protect the Indus River. They condemned the federal government’s decision to construct six new canals, stating that these projects are part of a larger plan that threatens the very existence of Sindh’s people.

They also criticized the Bilawal-Shahbaz coalition government, alleging that it has imposed a “One Unit” policy under the newly established SIFC (Special Investment Facilitation Council), which they claim is undermining democracy. The leaders accused the council of selling Sindh’s land and water resources to foreign investors and called for the immediate allocation of Sindh’s rightful share of water under the 1945 Water Agreement.

In Sukkar, Awami tehreek organized protest and paid tribute to River Indus by showering flowers. A huge number of protesters including women and children, from different areas of district Sukkur gathered at lab e mehran. The protesters demanded immediate implementation of Sindh Punjab water resolution 1945. Protesters further demanded for river Indus to be declared as living creature like that of Megh river of Canada and let it flow naturally.

The speakers including president of Sindhyani Tehreek Sukkur Shamshad Bapar, and other leaders Paras Bhatti, Seema Kalor, advocate Hina Baloch, Soohn Phulphoto, Fiza Phulphoto, and others.

Leaders strongly demanded the immediate repeal of all exploitative laws and institutions that threaten national resources, including Corporate Farming, Green Pakistan, SIFC, and the Board of Investment Amendment Act 2023. They also called for action under Article 6 of the Constitution against IRSA members who issued the Cholistan Canal certificate based on manipulated data.

In Thatta also, the Awami Tehreek of Thatta and Sujawal districts organized a protest at the Doolahe Darya Khan Bridge (Thatta-Sujawal Bridge). Workers and leaders of the Awami Tehreek and the Sindhiyani Tehreek, including Awami Tehreek’s Central Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katiar, Abdul Qadir Ranto, Ali Muhammad Kalmati, Majid Sagar Parihar, Abdul Razzaq Chandio, Aziz Memon, Sindhyani Tehreek’s Central Leader Salma Lashari, Sajida Parhiar, Aamna Zaur, Shazia Bhayo, Darya Khan Zaur, Ghanwar Khan Zaur, Mitha Khan Lashari, Shah Muhammad Chang, Bilawal Lashari, Aman Hussain Azad, Amanullah Brohi, Ghulam Ali Zaur, Habib Khoso, and others, gathered at the river to offer flowers and stage a sit-in.

They further said: “Keenjhar Lake, Haleji Lake, and all other water resources are being occupied. Through corporate farming projects, millions of acres of Sindh’s land are being seized and handed over to foreign capitalists. The Sindhi nation will continue its struggle for survival and existence, and its peaceful democratic resistance will persist with vigor until the SIFC (Special Investment Facilitation Council) and corporate farming projects are abolished.”

The grand rally is being organized against anti-Sindh federal projects including six new canals, increasing lawlessness, land grabbing in the name of corporate farming, and the reign of dacoits

From Correspondent

Sukkur, Sindh

Sindhyani Tehreek, a women wing of Awami Tehreek, has announced that a grand rally against anti-Sindh federal projects including the six new canals, increasing lawlessness, land grabbing in the province in the name of corporate farming, and the reign of dacoits will be held in Sukkur on December 22.

The central president of Sindhyani Tehreek, Umra Samoon, along with Maah Noor Mallah, Advocate Sorath Manghanhar, Rehana Baloch, and Sindhu Buphar, addressed a press conference at the Sukkur Press Club.

They stated that the ruling elite of Punjab has been forcibly occupying the water of the Indus River for the past 150 years. Now, once again, amendments to the IRSA Act are being made to build six new canals from the Indus River, implementing a heinous plan to destroy agriculture and life of millions of humans, animals in Sindh.

The federal government, with the facilitation of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), is making decisions against smaller provinces, particularly Sindh, which poses a grave threat to the country’s integrity, they said adding that the people of Sindh will never accept the federal government’s coercive decisions.

“Blocking the flow of the Indus River is an international crime, and by constructing the six new canals from the Indus, the federal government is committing a global offense. Halting the flow of the Indus River is pushing the region towards environmental catastrophe. The lack of water in the delta has inflicted irreparable damage on the economy of Sindh and the entire country. Those destroying the Indus River are enemies of the nation, and the rulers introducing new canal and dam projects are agents of foreign companies.”

“The people of Sindh want to convey to the federal government that the Indus River is not the property of the PPP or any government; it is the collective asset of the Sindhi nation.
