A tapestry of traditional Turkish flavors was showcased at a World Breakfast Day event held at the Turkish Consulate in Karachi on Sunday, offering the country’s cherished taste to the attendees.

Top Pakistani government officials and military officers, scholars, educators, and businessmen gathered at the consulate building – a blend of Turkish and local architecture – to celebrate the day.

The tradition, which aims to bring the cherished Turkish breakfast tradition to a global audience, is also part of the UNESCO-designated annual World Breakfast Day, which takes place on the first Sunday in June.

Syed Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of the southern Sindh province, for which Karachi serves as the capital, was the event’s chief guest.

The event showcased a variety of traditional Turkish cuisine, such as su boregi (pastry with feta cheese filling), sucuklu yumurta (eggs with sausage), salami, menemen (scrambled eggs with cottage cheese), simit (sesame bread rings), pogaca (buns stuffed with cottage cheese), beyaz penir (brine cheese), borek (savoury pastries), and Karisik kuru yemiş (mixed nuts), as well as Turkish tea.

Shah, in his remarks, rejoiced the tradition, saying the annual event has introduced millions across the globe, including himself, to the palatable Turkish feasts.

Shah thanked Ankara for its support to Pakistan during its recent military standoff with India.

Speaking at the event, Turkish Consul General in Karachi Cemal Sangu observed that Ankara and Islamabad have stood together in the face of regional and global challenges, and natural disasters.

Their bond, steeped in culture, religion and history, is strengthening with every passing day, he said.

The idea behind the annual event, he added, is not only to bring the people of the two brotherly countries together but to introduce Turkish tastes to the locals as well.

The Turkish Consulate in collaboration with Pak-Turk Maarif Schools and Colleges organized a series of events in Karachi on the occasion of the National Sovereignty and Children’s Day, and the 105th anniversary of the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, said a statement on Saturday.

The first event was held in cooperation with the Department of Sports and Youth of Sindh and the Karachi Police Club, where 105 saplings were planted by the students of Pak-Turk Maarif Schools.

The undersecretary of the Department of Sports and Youth of Sindh, director generals, officials of Karachi Police Association, teachers and students participated in the event.

In another event, around 1500 students from Pak-Turk Maarif Schools and Colleges’ in Karachi and in Hyderabad campuses, along with teachers, and parents attended a gala held a famous shopping mall in Karachi.

The event included music, folk dances, theater, marbling and calligraphy workshops, traditional games such as three stones, mangala, mongala, tug of war, hopscotch, dodgeball, dodgeball, mas wrestling, handkerchief snatching, painting, poetry reading and costume competitions, exhibitions of photographs, handicrafts and archery equipment from different regions of Turkiye

Food and delicacies from Turkish cuisine were also served to the guests accompanied by Turkish tea and coffee.

Addressing the event, Turkish Consul General in Karachi, Cemal Sangu said that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkiye, decided to celebrate April 23 as a holiday in 1924, the only universal holiday dedicated to children.

With UNESCO’s declaration of 1979 as the “World Children’s Year”, this holiday is celebrated with great enthusiasm and excitement together with the children of the world, he added. (PR)

The flavor and variety of traditional Turkish cuisines attracted top Pakistani government officials, politicians, businessmen, educators, and journalists to celebrate Turkish Breakfast Day in the port city of Karachi on Saturday.

A variety of feasts were showcased at a ceremony held at the Turkish Consulate as part of events aimed at bringing the cherished Turkish breakfast tradition to a global audience.

The tradition is also part of the UNESCO-designated annual World Breakfast Day, which takes place on the first Sunday in June.

The event’s chief guest was Syed Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of eastern Sindh province, for which Karachi serves as the capital.

Other attendees included Federal Minister Makhdoom Mehboob Zaman, Advisor to Prime Minister Feroze Alam Shah, Karachi Port Trust Chairman Syed Syedain Raza, Chairman Higher Education Commission Sindh Dr. Tariq Rafi, Chairman Trade Development Authority Pakistan Zubair Motiwala, and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Karachi Coordinator Halil Ibrahim Basaran.

The event featured an array of traditional Turkish cuisine such as Su Boregi (pastry with feta cheese filling), Sucuklu Yumurta (eggs and sausage), salami, Menemen (scrambled eggs with cottage cheese), Simit (sesame bread rings), and Pogaca (buns stuffed with cottage cheese), as well as Turkish tea offered to the guests.

Speaking at the gathering, Turkish Consul General Cemal Sangu said the idea behind the annual event is to bring the people of the two brotherly countries together and introduce the tapestry of Turkish culture and taste to Pakistanis.

Such events, he added, serve as symbols of unity and brotherhood between the two countries.

“It shows our love and sentiments for you,” he remarked.

The gathering featured traditional Turkish cuisine such as su boregi (pastry with feta cheese filling), sucuk yumurta (eggs and sausage), salami, menemen (scrambled eggs with cheese and paneer), simit (sesame bread rings), and pogaca (buns stuffed with cheese and paneer) along with Turkish tea offered to the guests.

Among the attendees were Dr. Azra Pechuhu, health minister for the southern Sindh province (with the capital Karachi), along with Sindh Chief Secretary Sohail Rajput, Pakistan Navy Commander Karachi Rear Adm. Muhammad Saleem, Commissioner of Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon, Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation administrator Saif-ur- Rehman, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation Coordinator General Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University Vice Chancellor Zubair Shaikh, and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Karachi Coordinator Halil Ibrahim Basaran.
