World Anthropology Day Celebrated at University of Sindh

Faculty members shed light on the interdisciplinary nature of Anthropology, emphasizing its holistic approach to addressing complex issues through scientific research

The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, celebrated International Anthro Day on February 15, 2024 which is always observed on the third Thursday in February every year, in collaboration with American Anthropological Association (AAA).

During the event, faculty members shed light on the interdisciplinary nature of Anthropology, emphasizing its holistic approach to addressing complex issues through scientific research. They underscored the strength of Anthropology, encompassing sub-disciplines such as Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, Physical/Biological Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, and Applied Anthropology.

Anthro-Day-Sindh University-Sindh Courier-1The department’s faculty, including Chairman Dr. M. Hanif Lagahri, Dr. Abdul Razaque Channa, Dr. Muhbat Ali Shah, Dr. Rafique Wassan, Ali Taqi, and others, engaged in discussions with students about future opportunities within the field.

The faculty members warmly welcomed the new batch, underlining the significance of Anthropology both in Pakistan and globally. The anthropology faculty members highlighted that the field of anthropology has a broader scope and understanding of the issues of the world such as health, education, environment and climate change. They highlighted that anthropology graduates can pursue careers in diverse fields in research and public policy by using the knowledge and skills of medical anthropology, educational anthropology, development anthropology, environmental anthropology and heritage and museums anthropology among others.

Dr. Abdul Razaque Channa highlighted the department’s tradition of celebrating Anthro Day since 2018 and its distinction as the first department in Pakistan to collaborate with the American Anthropological Association (AAA) to raise awareness about the cultural and social dimensions of society as anthropology helps to understand and resolve the complex problem of our society.

Successful graduates were invited to share their testimonies, illustrating the diverse career paths available to Anthropology graduates. These individuals are now serving in various capacities within government, private sectors, NGOs, international organizations, and research institutions.

Anthro-Day-Sindh University-Sindh Courier-2Currently enrolled students in the department shared their experiences before and after coming into the department. One of the students shared her thoughts on how the holistic approach of anthropology has inspired her to question and investigate things scientifically. Another student recounted their field experiences during their practical course work which was facilitated by department faculty and how the immense number of insights they were able to obtain because of the ethnographic method called participant observation, which is the core of any anthropological investigation.

The students were of the view that practice and application of Anthropology through fieldwork along with theoretical knowledge has been pivotal in their understanding and acknowledged the department’s role in frequently organizing creative and engaging events such as international day celebration, book talks, Art exhibitions and Guest lectures and field visits.

The event witnessed active participation from a large number of students and concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and the distribution of awareness posters.
