During the year 2020, a total of 48 complaints of harassments were received. The number increased to 56 in 2021

The Education and the Health are among the departments of provincial government of Sindh, notorious for acts of harassment against women at the work place.

This transpired in an annual report titled ‘Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace in Sindh’, presented by Provincial Ombudsman Justice (R) Shahnawaz Tariq to the Chief Secretary Sindh Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput in a meeting at his office on Friday.

According to the report, the Provincial Ombudsman received 48 complaints of harassment in the year 2020, out of which 24 were decided. In year 2021, as many as 56 complaints of harassment were received and 34 were decided. The report further said that the highest number of harassment complaints was received from the Education Department i.e. is 31 and 17 from Health Department, an official handout from the office of Chief Secretary said.

Justice (R) Shahnawaz Tariq said that the Provincial Ombudsman has set up offices in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and Larkana divisions. He also highlighted some important cases which were decided by the Provincial Ombudsman.

Chief Secretary Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput while appreciating the performance of the Provincial Ombudsman said that it’s provincial government’s responsibility to provide a safe work environment for women.

He suggested the provincial ombudsman to conduct awareness programs across the province so that people especially women have awareness regarding the laws pertaining to the protection against harassment of women in the workplace.

Director Provincial Ombudsman Saeed Ahmed Sheikh was also present in the meeting.
