Asia Journalist Association (AJA) issues statement on the violence against journalists across Asia and beyond, particularly in Gaza, where scores have been deliberately targeted

SEOUL

Asia Journalist Association (AJA) is deeply alarmed and outraged by the escalating attacks, brutal killings, injuries, and unjust detentions of media workers—blatant violations of international law.

We demand an immediate end to the slaughter of journalists across Asia and beyond, particularly in Gaza, where scores have been deliberately targeted.

The Gaza government media office said that as of 3 January 2025, 202 journalists had been killed in Gaza.

The Seoul-based AJA with active members from East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, and West Asia, recognizes the vital role media workers and media support workers play across the globe in news gathering and reporting.

They are risking their lives to report on events and to document happenings, and as such they need robust protection to help them carry out their assignments.

AJA deplores the unfortunate fact that instead of being safeguarded, media workers are forced to work in a very hostile environment and are targeted fatally, ending their lives and denying them the right to report the reality on the ground and to share the truth with the rest of the world.

AJA is very concerned about the current level of threats and attacks on journalists reporting from conflict areas around the world. With every journalist killed, a life is ended, a family is devastated, and a fragment of the truth is lost.

It condemns all egregious acts against journalists and calls on governments and employers of the media workers to provide them and their families back home with proper life and health insurance.

The Association also demands transparent, independent investigations into all journalists’ deaths and injuries. It firmly believes that every government and media organization worldwide must take decisive action to prevent such extreme violence against journalists.

Sabbagh is determined that investigative journalism continues speaking truth to power in the Middle East — especially when doing so is challenging.

“I hear today that they’re saying, ‘Society doesn’t want to hear anything about investigative [journalism].’ This is bullshit. Society is very tough. Economic situations are very tough. Political situations are very tough,” she said. “I’m asking myself, when was it easy? It was never easy.”

By Devin Windelspecht

When Rana Sabbagh was a young girl in Jordan, her German mother introduced her to the idea of Gerechtigkeit, which translates roughly to “justice” or “fairness.” Sabbagh’s career as an investigative journalist has revolved around this ideal: that justice, accountability and the rule of law matter — in the Middle East especially so, as governments and powerful actors regularly enjoy impunity for corruption, human rights abuses and violations of international law.

In 2005, Sabbagh, ICFJ’s 2024 Knight Trailblazer Award winner, co-founded the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) to train investigative journalists in the Middle East. During her 15 years as executive director, she mentored an entire generation of Arab reporters, many of whom have gone on to uncover corruption and abuses of power in Egypt, Syria, Gaza, Lebanon and beyond.

Today, Sabbagh continues to drive hard-hitting investigations as senior editor for the MENA region at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), where she’s reported on state-sponsored drug trafficking, government corruption, sanctions evasion and more. Her investigations have led to international sanctions, arrest warrants and criminal investigations, among other impacts.

Sabbagh’s reporting naturally has put her in the crosshairs of powerful actors. She has had her phones tapped, and attacks on her have caused her to suffer burnout from psychological stress, not least when authorities have pressured her to choose between her country and her role as a journalist. But she has not stopped bringing to light the crimes those in power want hidden.

“I cannot travel to at least eight countries [in the MENA region],” Sabbagh said. “But I don’t really care about [being able to travel to] these countries. I care that I’m able to tell the story and I’m able to expose corruption, and hopefully do some little change with the results of the work that we do.”

Charting an independent path

Sabbagh started her career in 1985 as a journalist at the English-language Jordan Times. Two years later, she joined Reuters as the agency’s deputy bureau chief in Jordan.

On her third day in the role, she received a tip about the presence of anti-government riots in the country’s south, at a time when Jordan was under martial law and information tightly controlled. Her first big scoop — which forced the King of Jordan to cut short a trip from Washington, D.C. to return home — also exposed her to the risks inherent to reporting in the region. “I was in the office; I thought every time the door knocked, they were coming to arrest me,” she said.

She reported on a slew of major stories in the Middle East while at Reuters, including the Israel-Jordan peace process, the 1991 Gulf War, and internal conflicts in Jordan, all while confronting sexism and her colleagues’ underestimation of her abilities.

“There were no women covering riots, they were all men with cameras. They used to look at me like, ‘What’s this idiot girl doing here?’” she recalled. “They always looked down on me because I’m half foreign. I’m blond, I’m a girl. Nobody [like me] was working these tough beats. But there I was sitting on the pavement waiting for Yasser Arafat to appear at four in the morning because that’s when he gave us the interviews.”

Sabbagh returned to the Jordan Times in 1999 as the paper’s chief editor, the first woman in the Levant region to lead a political newspaper. She turned what had been a mouthpiece for the government into a truly independent paper. “I grew the local content, and everyone started calling it an opposition paper,” Sabbagh said. “I’m not really an opposition person, I’m just a very professional person. I Reuter-ized it.”

This independence would come at a cost. After Sabbagh sent a reporter to investigate allegations of torture carried out by Jordanian authorities in response to riots in the country’s south, she published an op-ed calling for investigations into the use of torture at police stations.

After resisting government pressure to adopt the official line refuting that a protester’s death had resulted from torture, she was confronted by the paper’s chairman and told that she would no longer be chief editor. Sabbagh left the Jordan Times immediately after. “The fact that I used the word ‘torture’ in a in a newspaper that was 60% owned by the government made them really flip,” she said. “I got dropped in a second.”

It wouldn’t be the last time Sabbagh would be forced to choose between the government’s insistence on loyalty to her country and her independence as a journalist.

Bringing investigative journalism to the Middle East

Being removed from one of the region’s top English-language papers could have been a career ender. Sabbagh instead used it as an opportunity to chart a new path for independent journalism in the Middle East. In 2005, she founded ARIJ, the region’s first network of investigative journalists.

Introducing investigative reporting to the region was no easy task. At the time, knowledge on how to conduct investigations was nearly non-existent in the Arab region, Sabbagh said: “When I started at ARIJ, honestly, nobody had a clue what investigative journalism was. Even myself; I didn’t have a clue. But I was a very good reporter, trained at Reuters. I knew how to develop sources, how to protect sources, how to dig. These are the basics of investigative [reporting].”

Sabbagh in Mauritania

Recognizing the dire need for training, ARIJ held six workshops per year for aspiring investigative journalists to develop their stories. Participants would go on to carry out roughly 600 in-depth investigations over the course of Sabbagh’s directorship. With UNESCO funding, ARIJ also created an investigative reporting training manual that is still currently taught in universities worldwide today.

By the end of Sabbagh’s 15-year tenure leading ARIJ, the organization had trained more than 4,000 journalists, including award-winning reporters in their own right from Gaza, Lebanon, and Egypt, among others.

“ARIJ did something amazing for the Middle East. In the future, when they talk about investigative journalism, ARIJ is going to be named as the pioneer that introduced this genre of journalism [to the region],” Sabbagh said.

The risks and rewards of holding power to account

Sabbagh stepped down from ARIJ in 2019 to make way for new leadership, but she continued investigating corruption and human rights abuses in the region. In 2020, she became the OCCRP’s senior editor for the MENA region where she revealed the Syrian regime’s involvement in the trafficking of the powerful amphetamine, Captagon, broke the story on how the son of Lebanon’s central bank governor sent millions of dollars abroad during the country’s economic crisis, and detailed how an Iraqi bank channeled money to alleged funders of terrorism, among other stories.

Sabbagh’s investigations have had real impact, spurring calls for sanctions reform in the EU, for instance, and contributing to the passage of a bill in the U.S. aimed at dismantling criminal organizations involved in narco trafficking in Syria. “Sometimes [impact is] slow, sometimes it’s fast, and sometimes it takes time and sometimes you build on it,” she said. “I’m very excited to say that good reporting always creates impact, even if it’s a good feature or a good in-depth piece. It doesn’t have to be an investigation. It’s the quality of journalism that matters.”

Read: Western Media and the Danger of Dehumanizing Language in Palestine

Sabbagh is clear-eyed about the risks that come with the rewards of investigative journalism, however. She’s been detained multiple times by authorities, and had her phones infected with Pegasus spyware at a time when she was investigating high-level Jordanian officials.

The new era of technology means new challenges for investigative journalists, Sabbagh warned. “There are wars in the Middle East, but the hostility hasn’t changed [from past years]. What changed is cyber security and cyber safety. They’ve become really smart, whether it’s state agents or it’s the mafias. It’s become very easy to find encryption. It’s become very easy to find eavesdropping equipment,” she said.

Her advice to investigative journalists? Know what you’re getting into, and be prepared to acknowledge if it’s not right for you. “It’s not easy, but it’s passion. You have to be a person who believes in justice and accountability and rule of law and punishing the bad guys that use taxpayers’ money, and use their positions to oppress others and to steal the wealth of people,” she said. “It’s tough. It’s not easy. And if you can’t make it, don’t go into it.”

Nevertheless, the need for impactful investigative journalism is more important than ever in the region. The Israel-Hamas war, for instance, will present opportunities to investigate the future presence of security companies in Gaza, contacts for offshore gas drilling, and war profiteers who make money off of Palestinians trying to leave Gaza, among other avenues of investigation, she said: “There’s going to be a lot of corruption, and this is where we will need investigative journalism.”

In accepting the Knight Trailblazer Award Sabbagh credits the many colleagues she has worked alongside. “I give this gift to everybody that I worked with in my 40 years, that’s been great to me and believed in what I wanted to do,” she said. “Whether it’s my staff, whether it’s people that trained me, whether it’s people I trained, we all ended up supporting each other. And without the support, [ARIJ] would have never taken off.”

Celebrating a major milestone in its thriving history, Asia Journalist Association (AJA) has vowed to sustain its longstanding tradition of promoting truthful journalism, fostering unity and peace and embracing the future by building to its core values and goals.

During an online video conference on November 19, marking the 20th anniversary of the founding of the pan-Asian association, members welcomed the new executive committee.

The committee includes the incoming president Mr. Sophal Chhay from Cambodia, the five vice-presidents, East Asia Vice-President Mr. Seok-jae Kang, from Korea, Southeast Asia Vice-President Ms. Norila Daud from Malaysia, South Asia Vice-President Mr. Sathasivam Leo Nirosha Darshan, from Sri Lanka, Central Asia Vice-President Mr. Kuban Taabaldiev from Kyrgyzstan, and West Asia Vice-President Ms. Pooneh Nedaei Kharghani Sabet from Iran, as well as the new member Ms. Nurjan Kasmalyeva from Kyrgyzstan.

The elections were held on November 8- 14 November. Earlier, in September and October, AJA reviewed applications for membership and approved new membership from nine countries.

Lee Sang-ki

AJA Founding President Mr. Lee Sang-ki congratulated the executive committee members on their success and prompted that while their achievement is a cause for personal and collective celebration, it also invites reflection on novel ways to move forward with the association and create and seize opportunities for reinforcing AJA values for true journalism and peace.

He also welcomed the new members and assured them of the support of the association while moving forward.

AJA’s new president Mr. Sophal Chhay congratulate the members of the executive committee on their election.

The journalist community have called upon the Sindh government to fill the vacant position of chairperson of Commission for Journalists Protection and Other Media Practitioners (CJPMP) to urgently make the provincial law for protection of media and its practitioners effective and operational.

The call was made during a meeting of Pakistan Journalists Safety Coalition (PJSC)-Sindh chapter held here on Monday with Aamir Latif in the chair.

Justice (R) Nazar Akbar resigned in September as CJPMP chairperson after the then caretaker government notified his appointment early this year.

“This meeting of PJSC-Sindh chapter demands of the Sindh government to promptly announce new chairperson of CJPMP after the incumbent chairperson’s resignation,” the PJSC Meeting participants demanded unanimously, according to a press release issued by Freedom Network here on Tuesday.

“In absence of the commission’s chairperson the law is rendered ineffective. The current situation is not good for journalists in Sindh province,” CJPMP member Jabbar Khattak told the PJSC meeting.

The meeting also expressed concerns at the Sindh government’s abrupt “change of heart” forcing the incumbent chairperson of the commission to resign under pressure. It said that the commission needs to continue to operate even if one or more persons, including the chairpersons are not available for whatever reasons.

Freedom Network Executive Director Iqbal Khattak told the meeting that three years since the Sindh Assembly passed the law, making the province first in Pakistan to legislate on protection of journalists but the commission was struggling to work because of logistic reasons.

From Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Former general-secretary Mazhar Abbas, Karachi Press Club president Saeed Sarbazi, PFUJ (Dastoor group) General Secretary AH Khanzada, media development expert Adnan Rehmat and media laws expert Aftab Alam attended the PJSC meeting which regularly meets to review the CJPMP working while monitoring the Sindh government’s measures aiming to combat impunity for crimes against journalists in the province.

Farhan Asif, who works for digital platform, was taken into custody in city of Lahore, say police

Aamir Latif

Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan

Pakistani police have arrested a local freelance journalist who is accused of disseminating fake news that led to widespread riots and violence against the Muslim community in the UK following the stabbing of three young girls in the city of Southport, an official said on Monday.

Farhan Asif, who works for a digital platform, Channel3Now, was taken into custody in the northeastern city of Lahore, local police chief Faisal Kamran told reporters.

The arrest came after UK broadcaster ITV News, in a report, accused Asif of being the source of the misinformation that the 17-year-old British-born suspect was an immigrant.

Asif, whose social media accounts had now been disabled, denied the charge, saying he only copied and pasted the news from a social media post.

The accused told ITV News that he had issued an apology and deleted the post from all social media accounts, but the disinformation was kept being shared by other users, garnering views online.

Read: Pakistani gov’t denies hand in internet disruptions as businessmen warn of ‘huge’ losses

The police have handed him over to the Federal Investigation Agency for further probe, Kamran said.

Asif has no previous criminal record or suspicious transaction history, the police said.

Local English daily Dawn, while citing an unnamed police officer, reported that the disinformation was first published on July 29 by kossyderrickent.com, a little-known tabloid, which posts reports about celebrities and trending topics in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, the US, Zimbabwe and India.

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Bangladesh National Party (BNP) were behind the bloody violence in Bangladesh that resulted in ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, while Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman, who had been promoted and appointed as the Army Chief on June 11, 2024, was in close contact with the two parties, the media reports suggest.

Soon after Prime Minister Hasina tendered resignation under the military pressure and left the country for India in an army helicopter on Monday August 5, 2024, Gen. Zaman immediately had held meeting with the leaders of JI and BNP.

The Bangladesh government had imposed ban on JI for its terrorist activities in the past and again very recently on August 1, 2024.

Media Reports

The Indian Express has reported quoting the Associated Press that JI has allied with the BNP in the past but was banned from participating in national elections in 2013. It was found that the party’s constitution violated the national constitution by opposing secularism.

Despite the restriction, the party was allowed to conduct political activities, such as holding meetings and rallies. Amid the 2024 protests, Sheikh Hasina alleged that the party and its student wing Chhatra Shibir were exploiting the protests and instigating violence. The government banned the party last week.

Under the title “What is Jamaat-e-Islami? The Pakistan-linked terror outfit that brought Bangladesh to its knees”, Business Today reported that the organization was initially banned by the first Bangladeshi government for collaborating with Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War.

On August 1, 2024, the Bangladesh government officially banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Chhatra Shibir, designating them as terrorist organizations under Section 18/1 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009. This decision, confirmed by a notification from the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, follows years of allegations and legal actions against the group. The government accused the party of instigating violent protests that resulted in the deaths of over 300 people and injuries to thousands more. The protests were sparked by a quota system for government jobs.

Jamaat-e-Islami was founded by Sayyid Abul A’la Maududi, a figure associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, with the mission of establishing an Islamic state. The name translates to “congregation of Islam,” while Chhatra Shibir, its student wing, means “student camp.”

Jamaat-e-Islami’s activities have been controversial since Bangladesh’s independence. The organization was initially banned by the first government led by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for collaborating with Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War. Jamaat members were implicated in forming auxiliary forces such as Razakar, Al-Badr, Al-Shams, and the Peace Committee, which were involved in atrocities against Bengali freedom fighters, particularly targeting Hindus.

In 2013, the Election Commission of Bangladesh canceled Jamaat’s registration following a court ruling, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division in 2023. The latest ban follows recommendations from the law ministry and a decision by the 14-party alliance, led by the Awami League, amidst accusations of Jamaat’s involvement in violence surrounding the quota reform movement.

Jamaat-e-Islami has established a significant presence beyond Bangladesh. In Pakistan, it remains a prominent political force, despite its involvement in militant activities through its student wing, Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba. The organization has connections with various militant groups, including Gaza-based Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Muslim Brotherhood.

In Europe and the United States, Jamaat-e-Islami has established a network through South Asian immigrant communities. It is particularly active in the United Kingdom, where it influences Islamic organizations and community politics. The United States has been a strong advocate for Jamaat’s political participation, often urging Bangladesh to lift restrictions on the group.

Following the recent ban, Bangladesh’s law enforcement agencies initiated a crackdown on Jamaat-e-Islami and its affiliates. Offices and publication houses associated with the group were targeted as authorities sought to dismantle its operations within the country. Despite these efforts, reports suggest that Jamaat activists were attempting to mobilize and protest in various regions.

The government’s decisive actions, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, aimed to curb the influence of Jamaat-e-Islami, a group historically linked to violence and extremism. However, the organization’s deep-rooted connections and support base present ongoing challenges as Bangladesh navigates its political and security landscape.

The Indian Express in an earlier report said: The Bangladesh government has announced a ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami political party, effective immediately.

The decision comes in response to the widespread and violent protests that erupted over government job quotas, which resulted in at least 150 fatalities.

The ruling Awami League-led coalition, during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accused Jamaat-e-Islami, which was founded in 1941 in undivided India under British rule, of exploiting the protests and instigating violence.

Law Minister Anisul Huq announced that the ban would be implemented through an executive order effective Wednesday.

Hasina’s Awami League-led 14-party alliance, passed a resolution that Jamaat, an ally of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh National Party (BNP), must be banned from politics.

The government accuses Jamaat-e-Islami, along with its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and the militant student faction Chhatra Dal, of instigating the violence during the protests.

The student protesters have denied any connection to the violence, while evidence reportedly links these groups to the unrest.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, also the Road Transport Minister, said the government would carefully examine legal considerations to ensure the ban on Jamaat-Shibir is implemented effectively, preventing the group from exploiting any legal loopholes.

He stated that the ban is intended to remove anti-national elements from Bangladeshi politics.

WHAT HAS HASINA SAID RECENTLY?

According to a report carried by to the Arab News Pakistan, Hasina, 76, and her government initially said students were not involved in the violence during the quota protests and blamed the Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for the clashes and arson.

Hasina said that “those who are carrying out violence are not students but terrorists who are out to destabilize the nation.”

The students group declined Hasina’s offer for talks to resolve the crisis.

Meanwhile, BNP said 10 million party workers were on the run ahead of the election with nearly 25,000 arrested following deadly anti-government protests. Hasina blamed the BNP for instigating anti-government protests that rocked Dhaka ahead of the election.

DUBAI

Media has a major role in promoting future business concepts and conveying them to the public effectively, the head of the Emirates News Agency (WAM) has said.

“The media sector is seeing remarkable progress in keeping with global technological developments, with the emergence of new technologies in media work using artificial intelligence (AI) and data, which will shape the future of business media,” WAM Director-General Mohamed Jalal Alrayssi said at the “Shaping Economic Narratives: The Role of News Agencies” roundtable in Dubai.

Prominent media figures from Asia, Africa and Europe took part in the roundtable held on Day 1 of the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024.

Alrayssi *Center) with some of the participants (WAM)

The roundtable highlighted four key issues – the importance of engaging with new economic sectors, the challenges and opportunities arising from these sectors, ways to improve business journalism, and the importance of strengthening strategic partnerships between news agencies and various media outlets.

The roundtable stressed the role of news agencies in supporting future economies, promoting innovative business concepts, and their readiness to deal with emerging economic sectors.

It also emphasized the role of media professionals in future business journalism, as well as the importance of media partnerships in boosting experience exchange and upskilling young media professionals.

Journalists could be trained on how to deal with data and information related to contemporary economic concepts, such as the green economy, digital currencies and AI.
