Tree’s Dream

When I was an upright tree,

I dreamed to become a beautiful floor.

I wish to tell the living stories in my body to those who were lying or sitting in a spacious floor.

The reason why I drew sadness and joy,

By counting the movement of day and night is because

The story also needed patterns.

Stories about the bugs that built their homes on my body and the birds that eat them and raise their descendant.

Patterns made by being coiled in the sun,

So as not to get wet, and cutting round in the moonlight.

The children listened with their chin resting or crawled along the wave pattern of my body to fall asleep.

Even in the dreams of such children, I wanted to be a flat floor.

But by the time the children grew up,

And my story was no longer mystical, I was just the dusty,

Smooth flesh of a tree, and my thoughts faded.

The day when patterns no longer remain as stories,

What was reflected on my body was my mother who polished the floor,

And her deep wrinkles.

나무의 꿈

문정영

내가 직립의 나무였을 때 꾸었던 꿈은

아름다운 마루가 되는 것이었다

널찍하게 드러눕거나 앉아 있는 이들에게

내 몸속 살아 있는 이야기들을 들려주는 것이었다

그렇게 낮과 밤의 움직임을 헤아리며

슬픔과 기쁨을 그려 넣었던 것은

이야기에도 무늬가 필요했던 까닭이다

내 몸에 집 짓고 살던 벌레며, 그 벌레를 잡아먹고

새끼를 키우는 새들의 이야기들이

눅눅하지 않게 햇살에 감기기도 하고,

달빛에 둥글게 깎이면서 만든 무늬들

아이들은 턱을 괴고 듣거나

내 몸의 물결무늬를 따라 기어와 잠이 들기도 했다

그런 아이들의 꿈속에서도 나는 편편한 마루이고 싶었다

그러나 그 아이들이 자라서 더는

내 이야기가 신비롭지 않을 때쯤, 나는 그저 먼지 잘 타고

매끄러운 나무의 속살이었을 뿐, 생각은 흐려져만 갔다

더 이상 무늬가 이야기로 남아 있지 않은 날

내 몸에 비치는 것은 윤기 나게 마루를 닦던 어머니,

어머니의 깊은 주름살이었다
