SSP Kashmore-Kandhkot says the police have arrested some suspects; Dr. Ajmal Sawand of IBA University Sukkur was gunned down in an ambush on April 6, 2023
The police have claimed having arrested some suspects involved in assassination of Prof. Dr. Ajmal Sawand of IBA University Sukkur during the operation against the killers.
The police have also destroyed houses of Sundrani tribesmen who are said to be involved in the murder and had fled from their village after committing the crime. However the reports are unclear that the destroyed houses belonged to the alleged killers, as the anti-dacoit operation was already underway in the riverine areas.
According to SSP Kashmore-Kandhkot Irfan Samoo ‘armed people of Sundrani clan had targeted Dr. Ajmal during the ambush’.
SSP said that operation has been launched to arrest the killers and in this regard some suspects have been arrested from village Sardar Khan Sundrani.
Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science IBA University Sukkur Dr. Ajmal Sawand was killed on Thursday April 6, 2023 allegedly by armed people of Sundrani tribesmen in the limits of Ghora Ghat police station in Kashmore-Kandhkot district.
Ajmal Sawand died on the spot when assailants opened fire on his car. He was travelling from IBA University Sukkur to his village Shalu Khan.
Hundreds of people of the Sawand tribe with weapons had gathered at crime scene.
The body of deceased scholar was shifted to Kandhkot and after completion of the medico legal formalities and handed body over to his relatives.
Sawand did his PhD in Computer Science in France and currently was serving at Sukkur IBA University.
Dr. Ajmal was the younger brother of the notable of the Sawand tribe Dr. Tarriq Sawand.
Meanwhile, in an alleged video gone viral on social media, some Sundrani tribesmen were seen celebrating the murder by aerial firing.
The tribal dispute between Sawand and Sundrani tribes started three years ago over honor killing and so far five people were killed, including a woman.
Dr. Tarriq brother of the deceased Assistant Professor said that they had no any concern with the ongoing clash between the people of Sundrani and Sawand tribes. “My brother was killed because he was a Sawand.”
Meanwhile Vice Chancellor IBA University Sukkur Prof. Dr. Asif Ahmed Shaikh, Vice Chancellor SALU Prof. Dr. Ibupoto, Faculty members of the MUET Campus Khairpur, IBA University, SALU and civil Society condemned the brutal murder of a Prof. Ajmal Sawand and said that it’s not a murder of an individual but a murder of the educationists.
They demanded the arrest of the killers and also demanded the comprehensive strategy to defuse the ongoing tribal clash in Sindh.
