Point of View

Nature cannot be prevailed

Nature can never bring destruction. It is we who bring destruction upon ourselves.

Blaming others is a prime doctrine of us. It is too easy to say floods are a natural disaster, than to work on the infrastructure of the country.

The 77th session of United Nations General Assembly held recently in New York, was the most important event as it was convened after the outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdown. The UNGA 77 discussed a host of issues including the Climate Change, especially the recent torrential rains and flash floods that have ravaged the Pakistan. Pakistan premier Shahbaz Sharif in his speech called upon the world powers to come forward and help Pakistan as it is suffering from floods and economic crises.

Being a lover of nature, for me, calling floods a natural calamity is incomprehensible, so let’s dig out the facts. Monsoon throughout history from Sumerian till now played a major role in cultivating civilizations and empires. Mohen jo Daro is a prime example of it, where the civilization thrived. But let me say that entire civilization can be destroyed once comes in the way of a river. Nature can never bring destruction. It is we who bring destruction upon ourselves.

When British colonized the sub-continent in the name of progress they made their entire infrastructure on the ways of rivers, without taking into consideration that when the river will change its way it will bring destruction and catastrophe. What we are witnessing now in Pakistan is not because of nature – it is because we lack the knowledge of nature. After the World War 2, British stopped indulging in these laws because they know they can’t fight nature. But we still follow the same infrastructure.

Blaming others is a prime doctrine of us. It is too easy to say floods are a natural disaster, than to work on the infrastructure of the country. How can a single thing be a calamity for one and a blessing for the other? On the desert side people are singing and dancing because of the monsoon but at the same time urbanized people are calling it a disaster.

Whether it’s, if the infrastructure remains the same, there will be more devastation. Instead of begging for aid, we should raise awareness to stop urbanization so that nature can live in peace. One should live his life according to these commandments. Earth is our mother, we should care for her. Take from the earth what is needed and nothing more. Nature does not belong to us it is us who belongs to nature.
