Param Abichandani – A distinguished Journalist and Writer

Param Abichandani had a mind of research scholar; he served as editor of several magazines, authored five books and 300 articles and was associated to Encyclopedia of Indian literature and the American Biographical Institute Research Association.

Writer and journalist Param A. Abichandani, who was born on 14th July 1916 at Khairpur Mirs Sindh, got early education at Bhirya City of Sahiti Pargana and Ghotki and graduated in Logic from Mumbai College. He also did B. A.  (Hons) and Diploma in Commercial Art, Diploma in Advertising.

Permanently settled in Delhi, India, Param had a mind of a research scholar. He was associated with the scheme of Encyclopedia of Indian literature by the Sahitya Akademi.  Inspired by the work, he rendered the above scheme. He had written a few novels, but he was better known as a short story writer and a good critic.  A few collections of short stories are to his credit. Some of his books are ‘Jharna’ (Waterfall), Longest Sindhi Novel,  1962; ‘Hika Jara Ba Jibhiyun’  (One heat, two flames), Novel, 1964; ‘Taka Tora’, (Analysis), Textual criticism of various works,  1994; ‘Kaya Palat’ (Metamorphosis), Short Stories, 2000 and ‘Bhava –Abhava’  (Passion & beyond), 1991. He had translated many Books, Short Stories from Sindhi to English and vice versa.

He served as an editor of literary magazines “Rabail”, “Mallah”, “Sindhu Jot”, “The Sindhu” and “Indian Literature”. He also served as staff reporter of “Observer” Karachi before partition.  He also served as an Assistant Editor and then Editor of “Encyclopedia of Indian Literature”. He was also lifetime Deputy Governor of the American Biographical Institute Research Association. He wrote more than 300 scholarly articles.

Param, who died on 9th August 2005 in Delhi, India, was honored with several awards including Award for the Manuscript of book ‘Satu Saaru’, 1979. (By Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India); Award for book ‘Pet Te Garbh’, Best Short Story of year, 1998 (At Mumbai by B.E.S.T. Cultural Association) and  Award for his Book Taka Tora, 2000. (At New Delhi by Sahitya Akademi, Ministry of HRD Government of India).

Param, who was a versatile writer and journalist, had also produced Musical Features for AIR and Doordarshan.

He believed in the philosophy of existentialism in literature.  Being very good at English language, he rendered great service to Sindhi language by translating Sindhi short stories.  He has been contributing to Indian Literature bi-monthly journal of Sahitya Akademi.
