Chief Executive of Thar Education Alliance and organizer of the festival, Partab Shivani, expressed that the theme of this festival is climate change and youth empowerment. He stated that the main reason to prioritize this area for the festival is that Sujawal is a climate victim, having faced floods, cyclones, and other devastating disasters. The government, society, and media must recognize the urgency of the situation and take concrete steps to provide education, guidance, and support to the youth

SHOUKAT LOHAR

The youth of Pakistan in general and the province of Sindh in particular, face a multitude of challenges that have left them confused and disillusioned about their future prospects. With a deteriorating education system and limited opportunities for growth, many young people have resorted to negative coping mechanisms such as drug addiction and criminality. The absence of proper guidance and support, coupled with the corrupt nature of competitive examinations, further exacerbates the dilemma faced by the youth. It is high time for the government and society to address these issues and pave the way for a brighter future.

Education System – A tool for Job acquisition

The education system in Pakistan has primarily focused on rote learning and memorization, treating education as a means to secure employment rather than fostering critical thinking and creativity. The lack of practical skills development and career guidance has resulted in a bleak future for many young individuals. The class-based system of education further perpetuates social inequality, denying equal opportunities to all segments of society.

Mentoring and Support – Absence of Guidance

The absence of mentoring and support systems adds to the dilemma faced by the youth. Without proper guidance, young individuals find it difficult to navigate the complexities of their chosen career paths. This lack of mentorship results in a sense of aimlessness and confusion, leading some to resort to negative coping mechanisms.

Drug Addiction and Criminality – Escaping the Fractured System

With limited opportunities and a sense of hopelessness, many young people turn to drug addiction and criminal activities as an escape from their dire circumstances. This not only harms their own well-being but also contributes to the overall deterioration of society. Urgent measures are required to address the root causes of these issues and provide support systems for those affected.

Competitive Examinations – The Gateway to Corruption

Competitive examinations, such as the Central Superior Services (CSS) and Provincial Civil Services (PCS), have long been plagued by corruption. The lack of transparency and merit-based selection processes discourages talented individuals and perpetuates a system of favoritism. This undermines the aspirations and efforts of the youth and contributes to their disillusionment.

Neglected Female Youth – A Silent Crisis

The female youth in Pakistan faces unique challenges, as they are often neglected and their issues are overlooked. Gender biases and societal restrictions limit their access to education, employment, and participation in decision-making processes. Ignoring the needs and potential of female youth not only hampers their progress but also hinders the overall development of the country.

The Way Forward

Government Intervention: The government needs to acknowledge the concerns of the youth and prioritize their well-being by implementing effective policies and initiatives. Investments in education, vocational training, and mentorship programs are essential to empower the youth and equip them with the skills needed for the job market.

Awareness and Dialogue: The media should play an active role in highlighting the challenges faced by the youth and fostering a dialogue on youth issues. Special programs dedicated to addressing their concerns can help raise awareness and encourage the development of innovative solutions.

Creating Supportive Spaces: Libraries, community centers, and recreational spaces should be established to provide safe environments for the youth to learn, engage in productive activities, and foster social connections. These spaces can also serve as platforms for mentorship and guidance.

Entrepreneurship and Skill Development: Encouraging entrepreneurship and providing opportunities for skill development can empower the youth to create their own opportunities and contribute to economic growth. The establishment of small businesses and educational institutions that cater to the needs of the youth can create a conducive environment for growth.

Conclusion

The youth face numerous challenges that hinder their growth and well-being. To address this dilemma, the government, society, and media must recognize the urgency of the situation and take concrete steps to provide education, guidance, and support to the youth. By investing in their development, creating supportive spaces, and fostering entrepreneurship, Pakistan can unlock the immense potential of its young population and pave the way for a brighter future.

Our youth need some platform to show their talent. They need a platform for learning and earning

Do children have an opportunity to play at playgrounds? The answer is ‘No’, as our city doesn’t have any playground or a family park. Do our youth get the opportunity to start up their business? No, because vendors are buying the customers. How do I forget to mention the art? Do our youth have the opportunity to act and sing or perform a drama?

Alas! We don’t have any place for the youth. There are huge of talented young people in the field of art, but they don’t have a platform or opportunity to perform and show their talent.

A number of youth can be seen wondering for a job, or serving in private bodies for a long time at a meager remuneration.

Some common issues, which often are observed among our young generation, are suffering from depression, frustration and sadness.

Nobody ponders over the causes of prevalence depression among children. Even parents are worried how a young child feels depressed? The answer is non-availability of opportunities.

Pakistan is a developing country but there is zero role of educated youth. Our youth need some platform to show their talent. They need a platform for learning and earning. And our little kids need new techniques of learning in early education which our country continues failing to provide.

Many young people do not have access to mentors or role models who can provide them with guidance and support in making important life decisions

Shoukat Lohar

Youth is considered the fresh fuel of any nation, full of potential and energy. They are the ones who hold the promise of a better future and are expected to drive the progress and development of a country. However, the youth in Sindh and Pakistan face numerous challenges and issues that hinder their growth and potential. From lack of mentoring and guidance to the impact of technology, societal pressures, economic challenges, and political constraints, the youth in Sindh and Pakistan are grappling with a range of problems that affect their well-being and prospects. Let’s understand their key issues faced by the youth in Sindh and Pakistan, and explore potential ways forward to address these challenges.

One of the critical issues faced by the youth in Sindh and Pakistan is the lack of proper mentoring and guidance. Many young people do not have access to mentors or role models who can provide them with guidance and support in making important life decisions. This lack of guidance often leads to confusion and uncertainty among the youth, making it difficult for them to make informed choices about their education, career, and personal lives. Without proper mentoring, young people may struggle to navigate the complexities of life, and this can have long-term consequences on their personal and professional development.

The over reliance on technology can also hinder the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for the youth to thrive in the modern world.

Another issue that affects the youth in Sindh and Pakistan is the increasing reliance on gadgets and technology. While technology has brought about numerous advancements and opportunities, it has also created a quagmire for the youth. Excessive use of gadgets, social media addiction, and online distractions can have adverse effects on the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of young people. It can lead to issues such as sleep deprivation, lack of social skills, reduced physical activity, and increased mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

The over reliance on technology can also hinder the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for the youth to thrive in the modern world.

Furthermore, societal pressures and expectations also pose significant challenges for the youth in Sindh and Pakistan. Traditional norms and cultural expectations often dictate the choices and decisions of young people, leaving little room for individuality and personal freedom. Societal pressures to conform to certain gender roles, marry at a young age, or pursue specific career paths can limit the choices and opportunities available to young people. This can result in unfulfilled aspirations, lack of self-expression, and reduced motivation to pursue their passions and interests.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a significant impact on the youth in Sindh and Pakistan. The prolonged lockdowns, economic disruptions, and mental health challenges associated with the pandemic have taken a toll on the well-being of young people. Many have experienced a psychological downfall due to the uncertainties and anxieties caused by the pandemic, leading to increased stress, depression, and suicidal tendencies. The closure of educational institutions and the shift to online learning has also affected the quality of education for many young people, further exacerbating the challenges they face.

In addition, the issue of floods and natural disasters is also a significant challenge for the youth in Sindh and Pakistan. The frequent flooding in the region has resulted in loss of lives, displacement, and destruction of infrastructure, including educational institutions. Many young people have had their lives disrupted by floods, and the lack of access to basic necessities such as clean water, food, shelter, and education has further compounded their challenges.

Another issue faced by the youth in Sindh is the increasing cost of education. The rising tuition fees and expenses associated with higher education have made it difficult for many young students, both male and female, to afford quality education.

This has resulted in many young people dropping out of school or university, or not pursuing higher education at all. The lack of affordable educational opportunities

The youth of Sindh face numerous challenges and issues that need to be addressed for a better future. From the lack of student unions in universities to the impact of inflation on their lives, the youth often feel disillusioned and hopeless. However, there are ways forward for them to overcome these challenges and achieve success.

One of the significant challenges faced by the youth in Sindh and Pakistan is the absence of student unions in universities. Student unions provide a platform for students to voice their concerns, engage in constructive discussions, and work towards the betterment of their educational institutions. However, due to various reasons, including government policies and security concerns, student unions have been banned in many universities in Pakistan. This lack of representation has left the youth feeling unheard and disconnected from the decision-making process that directly affects their education and well-being.

Despite these challenges, it is crucial for the youth to remain hopeful and positive

Another pressing issue is the impact of inflation on the lives of the youth. Rising prices of goods and services have made it difficult for them to afford basic necessities, such as education, healthcare, and housing. The economic crunch has also resulted in a lack of employment opportunities, leaving many young people unemployed or underemployed. This has led to frustration, hopelessness, and disillusionment among the youth, as they struggle to secure a stable and prosperous future for themselves.

Despite these challenges, it is crucial for the youth to remain hopeful and positive. They should not lose faith in themselves or their abilities. Instead of waiting for government jobs (Pakky nokri), they should explore alternative avenues for success. They should focus on their education, engage in reading, and seek out scholarly individuals who can provide guidance and mentorship. Education is a powerful tool that can empower the youth to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. By acquiring knowledge and developing critical thinking skills, they can become active participants in shaping their own future.

One of the ways forward for the youth is to explore opportunities beyond their local communities and borders. They should actively seek scholarships and study abroad programs to broaden their horizons and gain exposure to different cultures and ideas. This can not only enhance their academic and professional skills but also broaden their perspectives and help them become global citizens. By interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, they can learn valuable lessons, expand their networks, and open up new doors of opportunities.

Another important aspect for the youth is to break away from the patronage-based culture prevalent in many parts of Pakistan. Bureaucracy and nepotism have often hindered meritocracy, where individuals are judged based on their abilities and qualifications rather than their connections or recommendations. Many young people feel disheartened and disadvantaged by this system, which often favors those with political influence or financial resources. To overcome this challenge, the youth should strive to find new vistas and fresh opportunities based on their skills, talents, and hard work. They should explore entrepreneurial ventures, create their own startups, and seek out innovative solutions to societal problems. They should not be solely dependent on traditional employment options but should actively seek to create their own path towards success.

It is also crucial for the youth to actively engage in the society and contribute to the betterment of their communities. They should not shy away from participating in social and civic activities, such as volunteering for social causes, advocating for human rights, and promoting inclusivity and diversity. By getting involved in social and political issues, the youth can raise their voices, express their opinions, and demand positive change. They should be proactive in holding their leaders and institutions accountable and working towards building a more just, equitable, and inclusive society.

While technology has its advantages, it is also essential for the youth to strike a balance between the virtual and real world. They should not be solely dependent on technology for communication and social interaction but should also come out and engage with their communities. Human connections, face-to-face interactions with people.  They should get guidance from experienced ones. These bleak and labyrinth time would surely shut down once and for all. The youth need to curb the menace of societal upheavals with their new and novel critical thinking. They are the crude capital of their nation.  They must become hope and dreams of their parents, nations and change them into reality with their industriousness, commitment and persistency.

The Youth: Hope of a Nation!!!!

Oh, radiant youth, with hearts so bold,

You are the treasure, worth more than gold.

The dreams you carry, the fire you ignite,

You are the beacon, shining so bright.

With boundless energy and passion untamed, you are the ones, by destiny named,

To shape the future, to make it bright,

To stand for justice, with unwavering might.

Your parents’ hearts, with love overflow,

As they watch you grow, they proudly show,

Their eyes are filled with hope and pride,

For you are their legacy, their joy and guide.

Your nation yearns for your vision and voice,

To rise above, make a conscious choice,

To lead with wisdom, to break new ground,

To create a world where peace is found.

Youth! You are the change-makers of today,

Your ideals, convictions pave the way,

To build a future where all can thrive,

Where equality and justice come alive.

Embrace the challenges, embrace the change,

With resilience and courage, you rearrange,

The world’s perception, its status quo,

With your determination, you will make it glow.

So, move ahead, with heads held high,

With dreams in heart and stars in eye,

You are the hope, you are the light,

Guiding us all towards a future so bright.

The youngsters are spending much of their time using the internet, with both positive and negative ways and consequences

By Komal Zulfiqar Larik

Now that it’s much easier to access the internet, it’s becoming a common source for people to find anything with the help of various websites using a computer, tablet, and mobile phone. There is no doubt that many of the youngsters are spending much of their time using the internet, with both positive and negative ways and consequences. This is natural that everything we use has advantages and disadvantages, so does internet has.

One advantage of the internet is that the young students can search for their schoolwork on the internet, and they can find course-related material on various websites. This can help teenagers widen their knowledge by exploring new things on the internet and improve their grades. Another great positive advantage is that people can learn and practice foreign languages by chatting with people from other countries on the social media – for example on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This is a good way to keep in touch with friends and family around the world.

On the other hand, there are also negative ways and consequences. Some young children get addicted to playing online games on the internet and spend most of their time there. This means that they waste most of their time on the internet instead of focusing on their studies, which can have a negative impact on their studies. Losing their interest in studies can also be a negative impact of the internet. In addition, excessive internet use can mean that some young people hardly talk to their families because they are always on the computer. And the big disadvantage is their health issue, like weakness of eyesight from using the screen for 24 hours.

To sum up, spending the whole day on the internet and using social media will have a negative impact on young people, but it also has some positive impacts. Personally, I believe that the internet is such an incredible tool with some advantages and disadvantages. However, we should be careful not to use the internet excessively. We should strike a balance while using the internet.

To eliminate poverty and unemployment, our system should change its policies and methods of hiring and keeping people on jobs.

Youth unemployment is the main problem that Pakistan is facing these days, and due to this, poverty is rising to its peak. Pakistan institute of Development Economics says that over 31% of Pakistan’s youth are currently unemployed, with many of them holding professional degrees. There are many reasons of it. One reason is that whenever a graduate person appears for a job interview, instead of providing him a chance to experience skilled people, he is expected to have a high experience in that area. The other reason is that the age of retirement in Pakistan is 60. In many government institutes, officers are not even able to work continuously for a few hours but they are on the seat. As a result, many talented people are still looking for jobs, despite their ability, talent, and working power, due to a lack of vacancies.

To eliminate poverty and unemployment, our system should change its policies and methods of hiring and keeping people on jobs.

Presently about 2 Crore 70 Lakh youths are jobless, or do not have any earning, 75 percent of them are females. Every year 445000 youths graduate from the Pakistani universities. About 25000 youths graduate in computer science but their majority could not get proper employment.

Karachi

The youths, hailing from different walks of life, have formed a new organization named as ‘Alternate’ to struggle for their rights, equal opportunities to education and jobs.

“It is better to uproot the rotten education system that does not provide the youth jobs and equal opportunities to education,” the leaders of new organization said addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Friday.

Leaders of Alternate said that the youths comprise 63 percent of the total population of Pakistan, and their number as per an estimate is about 14 Crore.

They are 50 percent of 7 Crore labor force of Pakistan and more than 33 percent of total voters of the country. However, there is no policy or planning for development of this active part of the national population.

They said presently about 2 Crore 70 Lakh youths are jobless, or do not have any earning, 75 percent of them are females. Every year 445000 youths graduate from the Pakistani universities. About 25000 youths graduate in computer science but their majority could not get proper employment.

They said Pakistan is amongst the countries where educational conditions are the worst. “Today about 2.25 Crore children are out of the school and after Nigeria this is the second largest number of the out of the school children. In Pakistan literacy ratio is just 56 percent, which means that after passage of 75 years of its independence the half population of the country is still illiterate.”

This sad state of affairs presents a worrisome scenario for the present and future of our youths. “To cope with the situation in an organized manner the youths belonging to different walks of life have decided to organize them on a platform of Alternate. It would provide an alternative thinking and struggle to uproot decaying society. Under the banner of this organization conscious youths of this country would wage an organized struggle against social, economic, cultural and political injustice in the country.”

This organization would launch a struggle to resolve the issues of the youths working in factories, industries, offices, shopping malls, markets, government and semi-government organizations and other workplaces and help getting their legal rights.

This organization would give a voice to the youths working in fields and farms. It is included in the basic objectives of this organization to foil the conspiracy of the elite class to distribute the youth on regional, linguistic, communal, and religious and gender lines so that their attention is diverted from the oppression of this class. It would organize the youths on local, city, province and national levels to wage struggle to attainment of basic facilities of clean potable water, electricity, gas, public transport, schools, hospitals, parks and sewerage treatment.

The speakers said that the departments responsible for providing basic facilities to the masses have become dens of corruption and Alternate would raise a strong voice against this corruption. It would fight for the rights of the downtrodden sections of society like women, transgender people and religious minorities. It will strive to fight growing hopelessness, mental issues and lack of purpose in the youth and arrange healthy activities for them like sports, cultural, literary programs. It would fight against injustice being meted out to all nations and cultural entities living in this country.

They appealed to the Pakistani youths to join Alternate to become a purposeful and organized force against all injustices and hatreds in our society.

Alternate demanded that education from primary to university level should be free and purposeful and available to all citizens. Curriculum should be revised as per modern needs and on scientific basis.

All work eligible youths should be given respectful jobs and till provision of jobs they should be given unemployment allowance. They should be given vocational training on the expenses of government.

The employed youths should be given all facilities as per law including official minimum wages, right to make labor unions and registration with social security and pension institutions. They should not be forced to work more than eight hours a day and they should be paid double overtime.

They demanded to cut non-development expenses and allocate a big share of budget for education and healthcare. All discriminatory laws and social practices against women, children, transgender and religious minorities should be ended.

All citizens should be considered equal citizens irrespective of their faith, caste and creed. Inhuman treatment being meted out to religious minorities should be ended.

All policies and projects that are danger to environment and threat to life on earth should be done away with. Solid steps should be taken to end the arms race in this region.

It is included in the program of Alternate to hold study circles, seminars, youth conferences, press conferences, youth rallies, literary programs besides sports activities, cultural programs, local and foreign study tours and picnic programs for the youth to develop their social and political awareness.

Those spoke included Aqib Hussain, (National Trade Unions Federation), Shehzad Mughal (student), Zainab Nasir (student), Anee Yaqoob (home-based worker), Owais Jatoi (factory worker), Ashfaq Roy (teacher), Aiman (home based worker), Shaima (teacher), Liaquat (Factory Worker) and others.
