Korean Poetry: A Beautiful Journey
A sage once said,
Life is but a journey.
When we set out, showers may fall,
And we may suffer under the burning sun.
Dr. Kang Byeong-Cheol is a writer, poet, translator, PhD in Political Science
Poet Dr. Kang, Byeong-Cheol is a Korean author and poet, born in Jeju City, South Korea, in 1964. He began writing in 1993, publishing his first short story, “Song of Shuba,” at the age of twenty-nine. He released a collection of short stories in 2005 and has since won eight literature awards and published more than twelve books. From 2009 to 2014, he served as a member of The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International. Additionally, he worked as an editorial writer for JeminIlbo, a newspaper in Jeju City, Korea. He holds a PhD in Political Science and currently serves as the Vice President of The Korean Institute for Peace and Cooperation and vice president of Jeju PEN. Moreover, he holds the position of founding President of the Korean Association of World Literature

A Beautiful Journey
A sage once said,
Life is but a journey.
When we set out, showers may fall,
And we may suffer under the burning sun.
Just as an apple must endure
Wind and rain to ripen,
So must a person of noble character
Overcome hardships.
The most beautiful moment in life
Is when compassion and serenity
Dwell within one’s heart.
In the most difficult hours,
We must remember:
Life is but a journey,
And all these things
Shall surely pass.

아름다운 여정
한 현인이 말하였네
삶은 그저 여정일 뿐이라고
여정을 떠나면 소나기가 내리고
타는 듯한 태양에 시달리기도 하지
사과가 익으려면
바람과 비를 견뎌야 하듯
고결한 품성을 지닌 사람도
시련을 극복해야 하네
삶에서 가장 아름다운 순간은
자비와 평온이
마음속에 머무는 그 시간이지
가장 힘겨운 순간에는
잊지 말아야 하지
삶은 그저 여정일 뿐,
이 모든 것 또한
결국 지나가고 만다는 것을
