Mr. Byeon Sunam is a poetry and prose writer
Poet Mr. Byeon Sunam was born in Boseong, Jeollanam-do. He graduated from the Department of Korean Language Education at Dongguk University and earned a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Education at Chosun University. He is currently working as a Korean language teacher at Mokpo Hongil Middle School, where he teaches students in the field of education. In his literary career, he made his debut as a poet through the quarterly Geulbit Literature, and also debuted as an essayist through the quarterly Literature of Spring, demonstrating his creative abilities in both poetry and prose. In addition, he has expanded his literary world by publishing novels such as Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Mother, Byeon Deok-hyeon and Novel Byeonhwang.

A single petal,
One calyx,
A speck of pollen,
Nothing among them is easy.
A flower last year, a flower again this year,
Such complacent illusion is a careless bloom.

Does the late-autumn Daebong Persimmon ripen for free?
It beats its chest in the crimson cry of azaleas,
And even if its roots are torn by fierce winds and heavy rain,
To become this year’s red Daebong Persimmon,
Each moment must be tightly woven, scrummed into one.

꽃잎 한 장
꽃받침 한 개
꽃가루 한 점
무엇 하나 만만한 게 없다
작년에 꽃이었으니 올해도 꽃
점잖은 망상은 허투루꽃
낱낱의 올이 무명에 핀 피륙에
피땀으로 퍼져나가야 실다운꽃이다
늦가을 대봉은 거저 익어가는가?
진달래 피울음에 가슴 치고
강풍 폭우에 뿌리 뜯기더라도
올 붉은 대봉 되려면 순간
순간으로 스크럼 되게 짜야 한다
조각 없는 통나무로 순간을 살자
태양으로 경건히 꼭짓점 차리는
투명한 볼록렌즈의 불빛 모으자
