Smile – A Poem from Uzbekistan
It brings joy and guards the world,
A moment that wipes all the gloom.
A spark of kindness, light and pure—
Is one beautiful, simple Smile.

SMILE
On the roadside stood a stranger,
Burdened with a silent pain.
His heart gnawed by deep regret,
He stood still in gloomy strain.
A little girl smiled at him kindly,
His heavy heart began to glow.
For a moment, he raised his head,
And felt as light as wings would go.
He then recalled his dearest friend,
And decided to write a letter.
Thanking him for all his help,
And hoping it would make things better.
This letter was so precious to him,
Because it came from a loyal friend.
Oh world, don’t ever part true friends,
For friends will run to help, to mend.
As his friend opened the letter wide,
He read kind words, so warm and true.
He was overjoyed and bright-eyed,
Then thought, “What now should I do?”
So off he went to a lovely place,
A restaurant, beautiful and neat.
There he saw a working girl,
And handed her a little treat.
The girl had never received such pay,
And on her way back home that night,
She saw a beggar by the road—
Who hadn’t had a proper bite!
From the coins she’d just been given,
She gave the beggar half in hand.
The man was filled with joy and warmth,
And prayed for her with heart so grand.
The beggar walked to his tiny hut,
And there he saw, in cold and fear,
A little puppy shivering there,
He held it close, and brought it near.
Freed from hunger, warmed with care,
The puppy ran in joyful spree.
That very night, from out of nowhere,
A fire broke out unexpectedly.
The puppy barked and pulled his man,
Then woke the neighbors one by one.
The fire was stopped, and peace returned,
The puppy’s work was praised by everyone.
From just a single little smile,
So many good deeds came to be.
In every heart and every face,
Shone joy and love in unity.
It brings joy and guards the world,
A moment that wipes all the gloom.
A spark of kindness, light and pure—
Is one beautiful, simple Smile.
