The Karachi chapter of the East West Centre Alumni Association (EWCAA) has new leadership following its elections held on Saturday August 9 at the Karachi Press Club.
The East West Centre was established by the US Congress in 1960 to strengthen relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia and the Pacific through cooperative study, research and dialogue.
The annual elections were held through secret balloting online and in-person under the supervision of the election committee members Dr Aziz Hussain, Aamir Latif and Saima Huma. Dr Aziz Hussain, the senior most alumnus (1963-1965) of EWCAA, said he was pleased to see active campaigning and enthusiasm for the elections.
Maleeha Hamid Siddiqui, a former Dawn staffer, outlined her plans for the chapter that include increasing alumni membership, explore Asia Pacific ideas in Pakistan, working to improve Pakistan-India relations and advocating for climate change.
Medical educationist Dr Lubna Ansari Baig hoped that medical professional members of the association along with journalist members collaborated more on health reporting. The newly elected general secretary, Syed Sibte Hassan Rizvi, Nukta correspondent, promised to tap into his youthful energy and continue the legacy of his experienced fellows. The chapter’s outgoing President Aamir Latif and general secretary Ghazala Fasih congratulated the new leadership and assured them of their support. (PR)
