Sindh Mental Health Authority (SMHA), in collaboration with provincial health department, organized a one-day Mental Health Camp at District Headquarters Hospital Umerkot on Sunday.
Rana Humersingh, Member, Provincial Assembly of Sindh, inaugurated the camp where psychiatrists and other specialist doctors from Karachi and Hyderabad conducted checkup of over seven hundred people hailing from different areas of the Umerkot district.
The patients were given counselling and free medicines for their mental health issues including epilepsy, depression, and other psychological problems.
Chairman SMHA Dr. Karim Khawaja held a meeting with the doctors of the Umerkot District Hospital at the end of camp. He said that mental stress and depression adversely affects the overall health and capabilities of a human being and therefore SMHA is endeavoring to provide all facilities including diagnosis, counselling and the medicines for treatment of mental disorders.
He said that Sindh government will soon establish a separate university for imparting education on mental ailments.
Dr. Syed Zafar Mahdi, Secretary General, SMHA, said that the authority is working on a plan to establish Mental Health Units with required doctors at all the hospitals of Sindh.
Deputy Commissioner of Umerkot, Dr. Muhammad Bux Dharejo, District Manager, International Rescue Committee Bansi Malhi, District Health Officer Dr. Fareed Ahmed, Medical Superintendent, Umerkot District Hospital Dr. Muhammad Ali Nohri, Dr. Bhemji Chohan, Dr. Premchand, Dileep Kumar Mulchandani and Dr. Asardas also visited the camp.
