The coastal communities, environmental groups, and climate practitioners of Pakistan have demanded that the Japan government and Mitsubishi Corporation should stop fossil fuel financing in Pakistan to achieve Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of Pakistan and Paris climate agreement goals.

Ghotki-Demo-Japan-Sindh-CourierThe coastal communities, environmental groups, and climate practitioners of Pakistan made these demands during a demonstration in Ghotki on Friday to get stop fossil fuel financing in Pakistan.

These demands were raised by Ali Hassan Mahar, Executive Director of Village Development Organization Ghotki, a member of GROW Green Network Pakistan, an environmental group working on climate change and environment.

Ghotki-Demo-Japan-Sindh-Courier-2A large number of community women from local villages of the district participated in the demonstration.

Shahjhan Marvari, a community member, stressed that the Japan-based Mitsubishi Corporation must stop funding the Tabeer LNG project and instead finance Renewable Energy projects in Pakistan.

Japan is one of the biggest climate villains as it is one of the world’s top providers of public finance for fossil fuels and also one of the top world funders for LNG terminals. In February 2023, Japan approved its Green Transformation policy, which is basically an attempt to undermine global energy transition targets under the guise of ‘De-carbonization’.

Ghotki-Demo-Japan-Sindh-Courier-3Representative from Village Development Organization (VDO) Ghotki said that the Mitsubishi-funded Tabeer LNG project, once operational, would not only prove to be an ecological disaster but also render the country energy insecure and vulnerable to global LNG market shocks.

The participants demanded the Japanese government and corporations stop providing funds to fossil fuels projects, stop promoting false energy solutions and urged Mitsubishi to finance Renewable energy projects and stop financing Tabeer LNG projects.

Ghotki-Demo-Japan-Sindh-Courier-4The Japanese government aims to promote dirty ammonia co-firing technology and false solutions like ammonia/hydrogen coal co-firing methods, prolonging the life of existing coal power plants.

Similarly, Japanese multinational corporations like Mitsubishi are continuously financing fossil fuels-based projects in developing countries, mainly Asian countries including Pakistan.

The Tabeer LNG project near Port Qasim Karachi is also majorly financed by Mitsubishi.
