Dhaka

Over 5,000 Jamaat-Shibir (Students’ wing of Jamaat Islami) leaders and activists have been sued on charges of carrying out vandalism and arson attacks during their clashes with police in Shahbagh and Paltan areas of the capital.

Two cases were filed against 5,166 known and unknown people, including some Jamaat-Shibir leaders, with Shahbagh and Paltan Model Police Stations on Tuesday night.

The clashes took place in Shahbagh and Baitul Mukarram areas following the death of convicted war criminal Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Jabbar has filed a case against some 5,000 people with Shahbagh Police Station.

Masud Sayeedi, a son of Sayeedi, and three other Jamaat leaders have also been accused in the case.

The case has been lodged as the accused persons carried out attacks on police and vandalized some vehicles at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and Shahbagh crossing on Monday night.

Salauddin Kader, sub-inspector of Paltan Model Police Station, has filed another case with Paltan Police Station at the same night.

Some 16 Jamaat-Shibir leaders have been accused while 100-150 are unnamed in the case filed over the attacks on police and Awami League men.

On Monday night, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi died at BSMMU while receiving treatment following his heart attack.

Hearing the news of Sayeedi’s death, thousands of Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists gathered the BSMMU and its surrounding areas and were locked in clashes with police.
