Sindh will strongly protest if the elections are not conducted on one day in the whole country – Nisar Khuhro

Larkana, Sindh

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh has categorically refused to accept any decision other than holding elections on the same day in the entire country.

“Sindh will strongly protest if the elections are not conducted on one day in the whole country. Any other decision imposed, is not acceptable,” PPP Sindh chapter President Senator Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said speaking at an emergency press conference at the Larkana Press Club on Thursday April 20, 2023.

“No other decision is acceptable except for conducting the elections of the National and Provincial Assemblies on the same day,” Nisar Khuhro said.

Referring to what is happening at the apex court in suo moto notice case, Khuhro said, “If the Supreme Court talks about the developing consensus among the political parties, the space also exists for consensus on holding the polls on one day.”

Raising question over the SC verdict of holding the Punjab Assembly elections on May 14, PPP leader said who has authorized the apex court to violate the country’s constitution and announce holding the elections, which is the sole responsibility of Election Commission of Pakistan. “Holding the polls on May 14 is in violation of constitution as it does not fulfill the constitutional period of 90 days.”

Nisar Khuhro remarked that in case the SC wants face-saving in its wrong and unconstitutional verdicts, it should constitute a full bench to decide the suo moto notice case.

Challenging the SC acts, Nisar Khuhro said the court has no authority to interfere in the powers of parliament. ‘The parliament is supreme having the authority of legislation.”

“The court should not be used as a tool for protecting the interests of one person,” he remarked.

He further said that holding elections is the authority of the Election Commission. “The court did not review Article 69 of the Election Act in the Suo Motu case, which provides for one-day polls.”

He said that the court has given an unconstitutional date to hold the Punjab Assembly elections on May 14, contrary to the constitutional requirement of holding polls after 90 days.

He said that today the country is caught in a quagmire where the political system is going downhill which has never happened in the history of Pakistan.

He further said that the Supreme Court is disappointing the nation. The Supreme Court disappointed the nation in the past by giving the decision to hang Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and also disappointed the nation by legitimizing four martial-Laws and now they are disappointing on the issue of elections.

He said that the job of the court is to make decisions based on the constitution and not to harm the political system.
