Scores of public transporters caught for excessive fare charging in Sindh

The transport department teams refunded Rs.267000 excessively charged, to the passengers and seized documents of two coaches at Indus Highway

Various teams of Sindh Transport Department, Traffic Police and the Motorway Police continued conducted checking the public transport vehicles on Friday April 20, 2023, the third day of a drive against excessive charging of the fares on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.

An official handout claimed that scores of buses and other vehicles were checked in Karachi and other parts of the province and imposed heavy fines while hundreds of thousands of rupees, excessively charged as fares, were refunded to the passengers.

The campaign was launched after receiving a large number of public complaints regarding over-charging of fares by the inter-city public transport.

In Karachi, 289 vehicles were checked and Rs.551000 were refunded to the passengers.

Public-Transport-Fine-Sindh-Courier-1At Indus Highway, in the limits of Jamshoro District, the teams of District Regional Transport Authority and Motorway Police seized the documents of two coaches and also recommended cancelling the route permits. The teams refunded Rs.267000 excessively charged, to the passengers.

The Motorway Police checked 30 vehicles in Shaheed Benazirabad district where Rs.8000 fine was imposed and Rs.10000 were refunded to the passengers. In similar action at Rohri at Sukkur-Multan Motorway, a fine of Rs.5800 was imposed and Rs.12000 were refunded to the passengers.

In Thatta, Rs.7500 were refunded to passengers during checking of 25 vehicles while in Shikarpur, a fine of Rs.5000 was imposed on transporters and Rs.4300 were refunded to the passengers.

A total of 40 public transport vehicles were checked in Larkana, where Rs.22000 were charged as fine while Rs.16600 were refunded to the passengers. In Badin district, Rs.7000 were imposed as fine and Rs.11500 were refunded to the passengers.

The drive against the transporters for excessive charging of fares also continued in Tharparkar, Sanghar and other districts.

The Transport Department had cancelled the leaves of its employees and officials to conduct the drive against the transporters. (PR)
