The decision has been taken to prevent damage to the city’s infrastructure due to manufacture, sale and use of polythene bags.

Sindh government on Wednesday decided to seal factories manufacturing banned plastic bags. The action would be taken jointly by Commissioner Karachi, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, Police and Karachi Metropolitan Municipality to ensure ban on manufacture, sale and use of polythene bags in Karachi.

The decision was taken to prevent damage to the city’s infrastructure due to manufacture, sale and use of plastic shoppers/ polythene bags.

Sindh Chief Secretary Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput while presiding over a high-level meeting on at Sindh Secretariat, said that factories manufacturing banned plastic bags in the province should be sealed.

Administrator Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Secretary Home Saeed Ahmed Mangrijo, Commissioner Karachi Mohammad Iqbal Memon, Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odhu and all Deputy Commissioners participated in the meeting.

Administrator Karachi said that plastic bags are the cause of environmental pollution. “Sindh Assembly had passed a bill to ban plastic bags in 2014 and KMC has also put a complete ban on plastic bags through a resolution,” he said adding that KMC officers are raiding various markets to ensure ban on plastic bags.

Murtaza Wahab said that plastic bags are one of the reasons for the blockage of storm drains in Karachi.

Chief Secretary Sohail Rajput said that now the district administration, police, KMC will take action against those who manufacturer and sell banned plastic bags.  He directed all the Deputy Commissioners to seal the factories making banned plastic bags. He instructed the Commissioner Karachi that 144 should be imposed regarding the use of prohibited plastic bags. (PR)
