Sindh University organizes seminar to celebrate Golden Jubilee of 1973 Constitution

Seminar was organized by the Department of Political Science, University of Sindh, Jamshoro

Department of Political Science, University of Sindh, Jamshoro organized a one-day seminar on Wednesday to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of 1973 Constitution of Pakistan.

The seminar was titled as ‘Golden Jubilee of 1973 Constitution: A Tribute to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the architect of the Constitution of Pakistan’.

SU-Seminar-Sindh Courier-1The seminar was presided over by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hamadullah Kakepoto. Prof. Dr. Ghulam Akbar Mahesar Chairman Department of Political Science, University of Sindh and faculty members Dr. Imran Noonari, shared their views in the light of constitution of 1973 and achievements of Z. A Bhutto.

SU-SeminarThe 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students also delivered their speeches. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ali Brohi, Chairman Department of Sociology, University of Sindh, and Prof. Dr. Shuja Ahmed Mahesar Director Pakistan Study Centre University of Sindh also attended.

The speakers at the seminar eulogized the services of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, one of the unparalleled and charismatic personalities of South Asia, who had achieved a landmark on 14 August in 1973 and gave the constitution to the nation.

SU-Seminar-1They highlighted the Z.A Bhutto’s contribution and relentless struggle to restore the democracy and rule of law in the country.

“Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s first achievement after coming into power was the preparation of a Constitution for the country. The most prominent characteristic of this Constitution was that it accommodated proposals from the opposition parties and hence almost all the major political parties of the country accepted it,” they said.

The National Assembly approved the 1973 Constitution on April 10, 1973, and it came into effect on August 14. Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto took over as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from this date and Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry was appointed as the President of Pakistan, the speakers said.

SU-Seminar-2Prof. Dr. Ghulam Akbar Mahesar, Chairman Department of Political Science also spoke about importance of the event, and highlighted, the Z.A Bhutto’s important role in the politics of Pakistan and in constitution-making process pertinently.

Dr. Mahesar said that The 1973 Constitution provided a free and independent Judiciary. The Constitution guaranteed a right to the citizens to be protected by law, and imposed two duties on them, loyalty to the republic and obedience to the law. “Any person who was found to abrogate or attempt or conspire to abrogate or subvert the Constitution was to be treated guilty of high treason,” he said.

The Constitution conferred several kinds of fundamental rights to the people such as the right to life, liberty, equality and freedom of speech, trade and association. The Constitution also declared the laws inconsistent with or in derogatory to fundamental rights as null and void.

The documentaries were also screened on the achievements and efforts of Z. A Bhutto. (PR)
