The clock on societal change is ticking; let’s break these chains of misunderstanding and inequality about women

By Narindar Kumar

In today’s equality-driven world, it’s alarming to see pervasive stereotypes and misconceptions defining women’s roles in our society. Despite significant progress, women and girls face judgment based on antiquated norms limiting their potential and freedom. Why do we, as a society, belittle or misunderstand women when they display independence, intelligence, or assertiveness?

A distressing reality is how society misjudges women for simple actions. Sharing light-hearted moments with a male friend is often wrongly assumed to be inappropriate, fueled by deep-rooted gender biases. Why is society quick to assign blame to girls for interactions, clothing, or behavior, while boys escape scrutiny?

Women - 02The answer lies in traditional mindsets holding women to different, often higher, standards. Women are expected to act “appropriately,” dress “modestly,” and speak “respectfully,” while boys face no such expectations. This double standard perpetuates gender inequality.

Women are equally intelligent, driven, and capable, often outshining men academically and professionally. Yet, when pursuing ambitions, they face resistance and societal pressure to conform to caretaking and subservience roles. Educating a daughter equals educating a generation; empowering women drives economic and social development.

In societies with alarming violence against women, victims are unfairly blamed for being in the wrong place, wearing certain clothes, or being judged for their behavior. This culture of victim-blaming creates fear and restricts women’s lives.

Shockingly, some cities still deny girls higher education beyond 10th grade, confining them to domestic duties. This regressive mindset stifles intellectual and emotional growth, depriving society of potential contributions.

The solution lies in changing how we raise boys. Parents and educators must instill respect for women, understanding boundaries, and recognizing consent. “No” means “no,” regardless of relationship or circumstances. Consent is non-negotiable.

Women - 03We must teach boys that women are individuals with agency, dreams, and rights, not objects of desire. The “boys will be boys” mentality must be eradicated, replaced with respect for autonomy and personal boundaries.

Our society must evolve, abandoning outdated stereotypes and gender roles. Every girl deserves to live life on her terms – pursuing education, working, or enjoying life without fear of judgment or harm.

Women - 05It’s time to realize that when a girl moves forward, so does the household and nation. Educating boys properly ensures every woman feels safe and respected. The clock on societal change is ticking; let’s break these chains of misunderstanding and inequality.

Let’s create a world where women are celebrated for intelligence, strength, and independence.
