Come Today – A Poem from Uzbekistan

images (1)Come today

There’s no hue in flowers, no taste in the dawn,

The sun set once more, its final light gone.

You’ve gone from me — not a tear in your eye,

Come today, for tomorrow, I cannot get by.

What if tomorrow you live — but I fade?

The sun may rise, but the moon might evade.

Birds could fly far to lands we don’t know,

And maybe the flowers will choose not to grow.

Maybe the breeze won’t dance through my hair,

Nor butterflies flit in my gardens so fair.

Let’s live today, let it bloom with delight,

What if you’re not in my world tomorrow night?

If someone else should capture my soul,

If my eyes for another should sparkle and glow,

If this is the last time our paths align,

What if tomorrow this old world declines?

If we can’t live today, join the world’s cheer,

In this grand gathering that’s drawing so near,

If at night, your head rests in calm, unaware,

And you wake to a world that’s Judgment Day’s glare?

You are my tomorrow, even my now,

I just want to fill this moment somehow.

To say “there’s tomorrow” and waste today—

Believe me, it kills tomorrow that way.
