Massive rally, sit-in against Green Pakistan Initiative in Mithi

Awami Tahreek and Sindhiyani Tahreek takes out rally, stages sit-in to lodge protest against anti-Sindh projects

Mithi, Tharparkar, Sindh

Awami Tahreek and its women wing Sindhiyani Tahreek took out a massive rally and staged sit-in at Mithi Chowk on February 23, 2025, followed by a citywide march, to protest against the controversial and anti-people Green Pakistan Initiative.

With resounding slogans and a day-long demonstration, the protestors strongly condemned the project, declaring it anti-state and demanding its immediate halt. They warned of further intensified protests if their demands were ignored.

Mithi-Rally-Sindh Courier-1Addressing the gathering, key speakers criticized the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for betraying the Sindhi people on the critical issue of water. They highlighted that PPP’s leader, Asif Ali Zardari, signed the Green Pakistan project, paving the way for corporate farming and the construction of six canals, which will further deprive Sindh of its rightful share of water and land. The speakers accused Zardari of treating Sindh as spoils of war and the Sindhi people as fools. They emphasized that, to date, the PPP has not recorded a single protest against projects that are accelerating Sindh’s destruction.

The protestors declared the Green Pakistan Initiative a “death warrant” for Sindh, warning that water scarcity will lead to desertification, pushing the region’s population into hunger, poverty, and disease. They stressed that Sindh’s people are now standing in resistance to protect their ancient civilization and have called upon international organizations to take note of this project, which was launched without the consent of the people of Pakistan.

The speakers further emphasized that this is not just a Sindh-centric issue; the oppressed people of Sindh, Punjab, the Saraiki region, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are collectively raising their voices. They denounced the project as a violation of international law and urged the United Nations to take immediate action to prevent the destruction of a historically rich civilization.
