Thar Desert Where Peacocks Rejoice Rain

Spiritual states are not always confined to human beings; when such a state descends upon a peacock, it spreads its wings wide and offers beauty to eternity

Amid the lush greenery of Karoonjhar, a peacock was dancing. Its beautiful feathers—green, blue, and brown, some light and some deep moved in mystical ecstasy. Along with the peacock, the entire greenery and wilderness seemed to sway in dance. The peacock is not just an ordinary bird. Within it, a Sufi dances. Ecstasy dances. Love spins in circles. Me raqsam… me raqsam… (I dance, I dance). This is Thar’s true mystic. Spiritual states are not always confined to human beings; when such a state descends upon a peacock, it spreads its wings wide and offers beauty to eternity. Birds are sensitive; before rain arrives, they sense it coming. At such times, the whole atmosphere resounds with their calls. In the same way, before the earth sinks into marsh, birds foresee this secret.
On this enchanting path, a vast world flourishes. As we walked along the stream of Gordhro flowing from the mountains of Karoonjhar, its melodious notes poured nectar into our ears. On both sides of the path, wild plants brought cool comfort to the eyes. Wildflowers hummed with honeybees. A popular saying goes: “From the hills of Karoonjhar, one and a quarter seers of gold are born every day.” All around stood countless trees and shrubs, with honeycombs clearly visible among them. The honey produced here is pure and highly beneficial. After the monsoon, countless herbs also sprout here, used as natural medicines. The abundance of trees and plants provides locals with daily sustenance through firewood, timber, pots, clay, grass, fruits, and honey.
In this wilderness, the songs of birds, the rhythm of flowing water, and the chirping of insects stand out in the deep silence. Especially the sound of running water it symbolizes the continuity of life. Flowing water nourishes creativity; within it exists the warmth of life. When we visited Nagarparkar during the rains, streams cascading from the mountains presented breathtaking views. Dark clouds drifted across the sky. Those waterfalls and streams reminded us of Gilgit, as if we were traveling in the north. The beauty of Pakistan’s northern regions can be glimpsed not only in Nagarparkar but also on Gorakh Hill Station, where memories of Nathiagali are revived. Sindh is a beautiful land, rich in natural resources, known as Healing Sounds. Tibetan and Chinese healing philosophies say that the sounds of nature reflect human emotions: thunder expresses suppressed anger and aggression; rain cleanses inner burdens, just as a person feels lighter after crying. Spring is like a smile upon the human face, while autumn symbolizes life’s impermanence. Human temperament too is bound to these seasons.
A silent mind feels life and nature deeply. A restless mind is never ready to grasp reality. Silence, tolerance, and understanding are qualities that grant greatness. A body drenched in perfume can never feel the earthy fragrance of soil. Similarly, a human mind lost in the noise of futile desires drifts away from earthly truths.
Thar’s culture is as captivating as it is challenging. Alongside its beauty dwell poisonous snakes, scorpions, and other creatures; those bitten often lack timely medical aid. This land holds much within it. Its mountains are filled with minerals. Coal mines have already been discovered in Thar. The handicrafts of Thar are recognized for their uniqueness both nationally and internationally. Much can change here but change demands wisdom and truth. Thar has always nurtured the gifts of creative souls, who, inspired by its beauty and silence, give birth to songs. Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s verses vividly describe Thar’s seasons. Thari people love their land with devotion. This same yearning, love, and passion are woven into Bhittai’s timeless poetry. Thar’s wildflowers, plants, and trees became the essence of his verses. From this land was born Marvi, a golden example of patriotism. Despite poverty, joy, carefree living, and a sense of fulfillment radiate from Thar’s environment.
