The Good Pears Are Eaten by Bears

A Poem from Azerbaijan

A pumpkin vine has climbed onto a pear tree

And has produced fruit.

From far away, one might think

That this is a miraculous pear tree.

The Good Pears Are Eaten by Bears

A pumpkin vine has climbed onto a pear tree

And has produced fruit.

From far away, one might think

That this is a miraculous pear tree.

But one should doubt.

There cannot be a pear fruit this big.

All legends are like this.

The visible face of politics is like this too.

One should doubt,

One should analyze closely.

Do you know, my dear!

The good pears are always eaten by bears.

Politics is like a garden.

Bears eat the pears,

And they give us pumpkins.

And that is like hope —

It does not finish by eating it.

The good pears are eaten by bears.

That is why the most beautiful girls

Become the fate of ignorant men.

Come, let me buy you some tea.

Let us drink tea in an armudu glass.[1]

Look at the shape of that glass.

It is like the figures of 90-60-90 beauties.

Look and find consolation.

(Note: Armudu glass: A traditional Azerbaijani tea glass with a pear-like shape. The Azerbaijani word armud means “pear.” The word armudu is used for this characteristic glass shape.)
