Unwritten Writings – Poetry from Azerbaijan
Unwritten writings are also
Like unwritten laws —
Society itself lives by those laws.
I write the unwritten
And I live by unwritten laws.

Unwritten Writings
The enemy suddenly attacked
And burned the old people in haystacks —
A 100-year-old man — the oldest victim of the war,
A 20-day-old baby — the youngest victim of the war.
These were not written in the Book of Records.
The animals stayed in the village
And became wild and free.
But when they became free,
They became wild slaves.
And the attacking enemies
Were slaves of greed
And slaves of stupid ideas.
Nothing is written anywhere about modern slaves.
… My dog named Duman also did not leave the village.
According to the latest reports,
He had joined the wolves
And returned to his roots.
It was not included in documentary records.
We had also returned to our roots.
Like our nomadic grandfathers,
We lived in tents.
But those who managed the war
Were modern fraudsters.
Yet their names were not written
In the Criminal Procedure Code.
In general, unwritten writings
Are more precise,
More accurate.
Unwritten writings are also
Like unwritten laws —
Society itself lives by those laws.
I write the unwritten
And I live by unwritten laws.
