Sindh Agriculture University has formed a team of veterinary experts to deal with Lumpy Skin Disease; offers technical assistance to the provincial Livestock Department for joint research.

While Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tando Jam has formed a team of veterinary experts to deal with Lumpy Skin Disease, and also offered technical assistance to the provincial Livestock Department for joint research, its experts have warned the cattle owners of another virus known as Warble Fly.

The university’s veterinary experts, Dr. Abdullah Arijo and Dr. Amjad Mirani, have revealed another virus “warble fly” resembling the Lumpy virus. The experts say that both diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes and flies, and have a similar resemblance in shape, while the lumpy mark is hard and the warble fly is filled with soft pus, says a press release issued by Sindh Agriculture University.

They said that the experts of the University would hand over the results of the samples taken from different affected areas to the Sindh government. They said that there is no harm in consuming the meat and milk of infected animals.

An expert advisory desk also has been set up at SAU Tandojam for the assistance of dairy farmers and domestic cattle owners.

It may be mentioned that as per official data released on March 8, 2022 following the meeting of Sindh Chief Secretary about the outbreak of Lumpy Skin disease in cattle, some 20250 animals were found affected in the province of which 15100 animals were in Karachi, 3781 in Thatta, 149 in Hyderabad, 656 in Badin, 85 in Jamshoro, 121 in Khairpur, 91 in Sujawal, 2 in Tando Muhammad Khan, 64 in Matiari, 35 in Shaheed Benazirabad, 124 in Sanghar, 36 in Thana Bolakhan, 4 in Qambar-Shahdadkot and 2 in Dadu.

Another official statement issued by District Administration Hyderabad had stated on March 10 that there were a total of 1415 cattle farms in the district and the number of animals was 284909 however only 112 cattle were affected and one died due to Lumpy Skin disease. The livestock department had started fumigation but only 268 farms could be covered by that day.

On Tuesday, SAU press release said that on the instructions of Dr. Fateh Marri, Vice Chancellor, the University administration formed a team of veterinary experts of SAU, to deal with the damages caused to livestock in Sindh, especially cows, by the dangerous attack of Viral Lumpy Skin Disease.

Experts of Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Dr. Abdullah Arijo, and Dr. Amjad Mirani, have approached Dr. Hizbullah Bhutto, Director, Livestock Department, and offered to conduct joint research to control the Lumpy virus.

A team of veterinary experts will also visit the affected areas and met with owners of various domestic and commercial cattle farms to collect samples as well as the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences also has set up a desk for diagnosis, treatment, and consultation of animal affected by Lumpy virus.
