Civil Society representatives suggest Special Constitutional Packages for Oppressed Class

Civil Society representatives at a meeting decided to convene a Roundtable discussion to further consider the psychosocial and economic issues of oppressed class.

The representatives of civil society in a meeting on Thursday while discussing the issues faced by the people hailing from oppressed class across the country, suggested that the government should come up with certain special constitutional packages for them for alleviating their sufferings.

They were of the view that such communities or the oppressed classes do not exist only in Sindh but all over the country, and they direly needed constitutional remedies of their problems.

The civil society representatives had gathered at a meeting convened by Senator Dr. Karim Ahmed Khawaja, Chairman Sindh Mental Health Authority to discuss the issues of oppressed class of Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by Senator Anwar Lal Deen, Dr. Riaz Shaikh, SZABIST, Mr. Faisal Edhi, CEO Edhi Foundation, Prof. Haider Ali Naqvi, HoD Psychiatry Ward, Dow University, Dr. Chooni Lal, HoD Psychiatry Ward, JPMC, Eng. Naval Vaswani, Mr. Kishore Kumar, Ms. Mahjabeen Shah, Mr. Raja Talpur, Mr. Bhanji Mal, Ms. Manzoor Martor, Mr. Shafi Odh and others social activists.

Civil-Society-Oppressed-Class-Sindh CourierIt was decided that a round table discussion will be held regarding psychosocial and economic issues of oppressed class. Professor Riaz Sheikh of SZABIST was assigned to decide venue and date.

Professor Haider Naqvi and Dr. Chooni Lal shared experiences of these communities. Kishore Kumar and Naval Vaswani also gave certain suggestions.

Senator Dr. Karim Khawaja said that these communities which belong to different religions include Hindu, Christian, Kailash, Jogis, gypsies etc. “They need special package in constitution so that their social, economic and educational status can be raised, as is done in constitution in different countries of the world,” he said.

“In order to achieve this goal, the political parties must introduce these agendas in their manifesto so that it could be brought and passed as a Bill in National Assembly and Senate,” Dr. Karim said and also urged the civil society and human rights organizations to must extend their support to these communities.

All the participants including Senator Anwar Lal Deen agreed to this proposal were unanimous to jointly work in this regard.
