Live surgery of Clubfoot replacement of 16-year old patient was performed at Orthopedic Surgery Department during a workshop

First time in the history of Khairpur Medical College (KMC), a live surgery of Clubfoot replacement was performed on February 7, 2025.

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Khairpur Medical College organized the Ponseti Workshop and Pakistan Orthopedic Association (POA) Regional meeting during which the live surgery was done.

Head of Department of Orthopedic surgery KMC Khairpur Dr. Naveed Solangi defined the aims and objectives of the Workshop and said that it is a first ever live surgery Clubfoot replacement, a milestone towards the strengthening of the Orthopedic Department of KMC.

He said that live surgery of Clubfoot replacement of 16-year old patient was performed at 50-bed Orthopedic Surgery Department which consisted of 06 Consultants, 07 trainees.

Clubfoot-Workshop-Sindh CourierRenowned orthopedic surgeons from across Sindh including Dr. Anisuddin Bhatti, Prof. Badaruddin Sahato, Prof. Zamir Hussain Soomro, Dr. Parvez Ali, Dr. Muhammad Jamil, Dr. Muhammad Noman, Dr. Naveed Jumani, Dr. Sajjad Ahmed Mahar, Dr. Dost Muhammad Sohu, Dr. Mahtab Shahani, Dr. Hafeezullah Ghumro, Abdul Rasheed Napar and others discussed Pirani and Demglio scoring methodology process in Ponesti treatment.

They focused on conservative treatment and surgery procedures, Ponesti techniques, evaluation of Clubfoot, Ponesti techniques and principles, problems and solutions during casting and bracing, relapse and recurrence, maintenance treatment of foot.

They said that clubfoot in young children can be treated with the Ponesti method which is a systematic series of casting and orthotic bracing treatments that permanently and non-surgically corrects clubfoot in young children.

They said that the parents of the almost children with congenital clubfoot, should not be worried now because the clubfoot of such children can be corrected with a conservative treatment as well as with a surgery.

Ponseti method is the most successful treatment regime for congenital clubfoot available and reported an initial correction rate of around 90 % in most studies.

They said that a study on the educational needs for parents of children with clubfoot identified understanding the process of treatment and problems concerning the bracing portion of treatment to be the two major categories.

Professor Dr. Asadullah Mahar addressing the workshop said that orthopedic department of Khairpur Medical College was doing a good Job and trying to implement the latest orthopedic treatment methodology.

He urged upon the doctors to focus on the latest research and create more doctors to serve the people of the urban and rural areas.

Shields and certificates were distributed among the Orthopedic Surgeons drawn from Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana and Sukkur.
