Umar Kot, Sindh
Awami Tahreek has demanded formation of a high level judicial commission for probe and justice in custodial killing of Dr. Shahnawaz Kumbhar.
A delegation of senior members from Awami Tahreek and Sindhyani Tahreek, led by Hoor-ul-Nisa Palijo and Advocate Wasand Thari, visited the home of the assassinated Dr. Shahnawaz Kumbhar in Jaihinro village of Umar Kot to offer condolences to his family.
Delegation stated that “Dr. Shahnawaz Kumbhar, an educated and respectable citizen, was murdered in Mirpurkhas under a conspiracy involving religious clerics, police officials, local elected representatives, and landlords. High-ranking officials such as DIG, CIA officers, SSP, and SHO Sindhri are accused of playing role in the killing, abusing their power, and bypassing due process.”
The delegation demanded the immediate arrest of all the clerics and police officers involved.
They further said that “This case goes beyond being an isolated incident; it emphasizes the urgent need to counter the dangerous ideologies threatening social harmony in Sindh. The province, historically known for its secular and tolerant values, is now grappling with the rise of religious fanaticism.”
The delegation urged the government to address this ideological spread, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to protect Sindh’s moderate social fabric.
To safeguard the province’s rich Sufi traditions and combat extremism, the state must act decisively by strengthening institutions, ensuring justice, and promoting education to foster tolerance. Failure to do so could deepen divisions and lead to further unrest.
The delegation called on the Supreme Court and the High Court of Sindh to take immediate notice of the case, investigate the rising tide of extremism, and ensure that such ideologies are not tolerated. To safeguard the province’s rich Sufi traditions and combat extremism, the state must act decisively by strengthening institutions, ensuring justice, and promoting education to foster tolerance. Failure to do so could deepen divisions and lead to further unrest.
Awami Tahreek reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to combating religious extremism and promoting peace, tolerance, and brotherhood in the region. “The case of Dr. Shahnawaz Kumbhar has brought to light the growing challenge of extremism in Sindh and Awami Tahreek is ready to play role as ever,” the delegation stated.
