Training workshop held on political participation of persons with disabilities at the local government level

From Correspondent

Nawabshah, Sindh

A training workshop on ensuring political participation of persons with disabilities was organized by Pakistan US Alumni Network in Nawabshah on Sunday.

Coordinator of the project, Abid Lashari, said that appointing councilors through reserved seats for the persons with disabilities in the Local Government was a commendable act and a good move by the Sindh government.

He said that hundreds of disabled people have become a part of local politics and decision-making process.

He said that the Disability Rights Act 2018 Government of Sindh guarantees political participation as well as the protection of all rights of persons with disabilities.

Akram Khaskheli President Hari Welfare Association said that allocating councilor seats for disabled people in the Local Government Act amendment bill 2021 was a big step through which people with disabilities became part of decision-making at the local level. Before that, disabled persons were excluded from politics, deprived of the right to participate in politics.

Tariq Channar said that there was lack of information and awareness among disabled people due to which the disabled youth are not able to get their right of political participation.

Political parties should encourage the disabled in their political participation and ensure their political participation by forming a special wing of the person with disabilities in the local organization.

Asma Munir, Manthar Magsi, Dilamrad Mari, Murtaza Mughairi and others also spoke on the occasion.
