In order to pay tribute to Guido Chiarelli (1902-1982) on the 120th anniversary of his birth, the LIGHT will be celebrated in Turin, Italy, with the opening of a major art exhibition on October 25, and in parallel with an international website that will be officially launched on the same day.
Guido Chiarelli was the man who illuminated Turin with his futuristic designs in the 1950s and 1960s.
“We are going through difficult times, dark times, and not only in a metaphorical sense. Among the extraordinary measures, to cope with high energy prices, in Europe there is the reduction of public lighting: many municipalities have decided to turn off the lighting of monumental sites and lower the power level of street lamps,” said Lidia Chiarelli, President of Immagine & Poesia Association Torino, Italy, in a letter mailed to Sindh Courier on October 13, 2022.
“The project ‘Lights for the City’ wants to bring us out of this darkness, at least temporarily, and invite us to look back and retrace the last decades of the lighting history when cities, Turin in particular, competed to be called the new “cities of lights” and win the title of “ville lumière” like Paris,” she said.
In the art exhibition numerous artists, with different techniques, have given their interpretation of cities at night, to pay tribute to Guido Chiarelli (1902-1982), a pioneer of public lighting and famous for improving Turin cityscape with futuristic projects especially during the period of the Italia 61 celebrations.
Guido Chiarelli knew how to put light at the service of beauty: his artistic illuminations of fountains, palaces and historical monuments are still famous, and he is remembered as “The Poet of Light.”
Writers, Poets, Photographers, Musicians from several different countries of the world have also sent their contributions to the web site. The participating countries of the project are 65.
Visitors to this exhibition and to the site will be able to marvel at the beauty of lights, grasping their power to reshape spaces and transform them into true theatrical sets, and in the end they may perhaps agree with Vincent van Gogh’s reflection:
‘I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.’
