In Kazakhstan, a memorandum between the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife and Prague Zoo on the acclimatization of wild horses in Kazakhstan has come into effect, announced Danial Turgambaev, the Chairman of the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology, and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, the portal Kazakhstan Today reports.
Following the negotiations, the first group of horses, 7-8 individuals, will be brought to Kazakhstan from the Czech Republic in June 2024.
The Przewalski’s horse disappeared entirely from the wild in the late 1960s. However, breeding programs in European zoos have allowed the establishment of a sufficiently strong population in captivity for reintroduction into countries where the species previously inhabited. The reintroduction of wild horses to Kazakhstan will leverage the successful experience gained from previous reintroductions by Prague Zoo in Mongolia from 2012 to 2019.
The territory of the Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve, located in the Kostanay region, has been identified as the most favorable location for the reintroduction of Przewalski’s horses.
