In view of growing number of patients due to communicable and chronic diseases, Pakistan is facing an acute shortage of the healthcare workforce, especially, the nursing shortage.

According to government data, the country needs some sixty thousands nurses however other studies suggest that one million nurses are required to cope with the situation.

Former President of Pakistan Nursing Council Prof. Afshan Nazly also pointed out the shortage on Sunday saying that that Pakistan needs one million nurses. “The nursing is the backbone of the health system,” she said while speaking at the lamp lighting and oath taking ceremony of Kharadar General Hospital School of Nursing.

Chairman of the hospital and pediatrician Prof. Abdul Ghaffar Billoo said that millions of lives are being lost due to maternal and child mortality, malnutrition and lack of hygiene. “Manpower, equipped with health awareness can change this attitude,” he viewed.

Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr. Khalid Iqbal, said that Kharadar General Hospital has been working hard to save lives and improve the quality of life by providing quality medical services in low income areas for the last 100 years.

“Today, Kharadar General Hospital is fulfilling its responsibility in the society as an educational, training and research institution,” he said.

Principal Talat Parveen Shah while congratulating the students for stepping into the field of nursing said that you will fulfill the great duty of serving humanity by stepping into the most prestigious profession.

He said that Kharadar General Hospital School of Nursing is playing a practical role for the establishment of a healthy society by training highly professional nurses.

Guest of Honor Leading Industrialist Tariq Ullah Sufi said that Nursing is a very prestigious and dignified field where there are bright prospects of professional development with the service of suffering humanity. Kharadar General Hospital School of Nursing enlightening the hope of realizing the dream of quality professional education of students living in low-income areas.
