Karachi, Sindh

In strong opposition to six new canals from Indus River in Punjab, corporate farming, and amendments to the IRSA Act, Awami Tehreek organized a 12-kilometer protest march on Sunday February 2, 2025, from Ghaghar Phatak to Allah Wala Chowrangi, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir Karachi.

Awami Tehreek-March-Sindh Courier-1The march was led by Advocate Vasand Thari, central president of Awami Tehreek, along with key leaders, including Hurnsa Palijo, Pirha Soomro (District Malir President), Zubair Noonari (Sindhi Mazdoor Tehreek General Secretary), Advocate Khalid Taniyo, Advocate Abdullah Bapar, Iqbal Jarwar, Zahida Nawaz Ghanjho, Saakh Sindhu, Rustam Mirani, Balqees Langah, Sajida Malano, Hoor-un-Nisa Mirani, Hajran Kalmati, and many others.

Addressing the participants, Advocate Vasand Thari strongly condemned the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for betraying the people of Sindh. He accused President Asif Ali Zardari of approving six new canals, calling it a deliberate conspiracy to deprive Sindh of its water resources. He criticized Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for misleading the public with false statements, while the PPP government actively supports strategic canal projects, corporate farming, and other initiatives that threaten Sindh’s survival.

Awami Tehreek-March-Sindh Courier-2Thari warned that the construction of new canals on the Indus River is even more dangerous than the controversial Kalabagh Dam. He accused the ruling elite of pushing the country toward disaster by exploiting the resources and lands of oppressed nations under the guise of economic development.

He highlighted that the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has been created to sell the country’s resources and that even Karoonjhar is being sold under SIFC policies. He claimed that the Bilawal-Shahbaz coalition government is auctioning national assets to safeguard elite interests.

Thari highlighted the dire consequences of corporate farming, warning that it would lead to severe food shortages, mass displacement of local farmers, rising hunger, poverty, and unemployment. He emphasized that such policies would strip ordinary citizens of their land ownership, transferring control to foreign corporations.

Awami Tehreek-March-Sindh Courier-3Thari also criticized amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), stating that these changes are designed to suppress freedom of speech and are a direct attack on democratic rights. He accused the ruling establishment of implementing every possible measure to keep the people in submission.

The Sindhi people have historically fought to protect their land and water, and Thari vowed that their struggle against these projects will continue until the new canals are canceled.

He urged the government to immediately withdraw corporate farming and strategic canal projects before they cause irreversible damage to Sindh’s people and resources.
