Growing Attack on Sindh’s Professionals

A Call to Recognize the Hidden War Against Our Brightest Minds

There is a silent war being waged against Sindh’s emerging professional class — and it’s time we name it, face it, and fight it.

In the past, Sindhi people from middle and lower-middle class backgrounds lived under double oppression. In rural Sindh, they were at the mercy of powerful feudal lords and criminal gangs. In urban Sindh, they faced threats from racist, violent militant groups. On top of that, they endured the suffocation of military dictatorships. It was a fight for survival — and many chose to resist.

They joined nationalist, democratic, and liberal movements. They protested. They were jailed. Some were tortured. Others were forced into silence. Many became disillusioned after seeing those movements either fail or fall into the hands of corrupt leadership. But they did not give up on their dreams for Sindh’s future. Instead of weapons, they picked up schoolbooks — for their children.

Those same working-class and middle-class families invested everything they had to educate their children. Today, their sons and daughters are doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, journalists, and scientists— thriving not just in Sindh but around the world. This new class is educated, confident, and independent. And this is exactly what threatens the tribal and feudal system that has ruled Sindh for generations.

Now, these professionals are being targeted — not just figuratively, but literally.

We saw the horrifying murder of Professor Dr. Ajmal Sawand, a brilliant academic, shot dead in a senseless tribal feud. We mourn Dr. Shahnawaz Kunbhar, Jan Muhammad Mehar, Nasrullah Gadani — each a voice of Sindh, silenced either by bullets or conspiracy. And now, we are seeing what appears to be a targeted attempt to falsely accuse Dr. Dhani Bakhsh Bhangwar, a respected dentist and social activist, in a murder case. He and his family — known for their decency and public service — are being dragged into a tribal conflict he publicly denies any part in.

This pattern is no coincidence.

What we are witnessing is a planned backlash against the rise of Sindh’s educated class. Feudal lords and tribal chiefs, unable to accept losing their grip on society, are trying to drag our brightest minds into violence, conflict, or legal traps. Their aim is to break the backbone of a new, self-made Sindh.

This must stop — now.

We call on Sindh’s educated, conscious citizens: academics, professionals, writers, students, civil society — to connect the dots. These are not isolated incidents. This is a systemic attempt to crush progress and silence the new Sindhi voice.

We must speak out, support the victims and their families, and demand protection for our doctors, teachers, journalists, and engineers. The future of Sindh lies in their hands — not in the hands of tribal violence, political puppets, or outdated systems of control.

Let this be a turning point. Let us defend our people, our progress, and our future.
